María POV
“MOM!!” I yell at the top of my lungs. I drop my backpack on the floor, not even bothering to close the front door, and bolt in the direction of her scream. So many terrible thoughts flood my mind. Who is brave enough to enter into the alpha’s personal home? My fighting skills are decent but there are still many fighters better than myself. However I’m ready to give it my all when it comes to my family. I follow the noise into the kitchen and stop in my tracks.
There is water all over the island that sits in the middle of the kitchen. The floor has puddles and the counters surrounding the sink have been splashed. To make things worse, there are chocolate chip cookies cooling on racks on the center of the island; soggy from the water.
My mom is standing in between the sink and the island with a look of surprise etched on her face. Her shirt has been soaked through while her shiny curls, dripping water, are plastered to her forehead and cheeks. I shake my head to snap out of my own shock, and sadness over the cookies. I bite my lip to hold back a giggle over my moms appearance. Thankful she isn’t in danger, I sprint to the laundry room to grab a couple of cleaning towels and then return to the kitchen.
“Mom what happened?” I asked.
She responds, calling me by my nickname.
“Ria! I’m not sure. One minute I’m washing my hands, the next im taking a shower in the kitchen.”
I giggle a bit at that remark and hand her a towel while I use the other to wipe up some of the water.
“Mom, I’m just glad your okay. I heard you scream and thought something terrible had happened” I admit.
She wipes her face and comes over to give me a hug.
“Ria, you sweet girl, I didn’t mean to frighten you. I appreciate you coming to my rescue but I would prefer you find your father if there were true danger.”
She cups my face and kisses my forehead and adds, “I’m sorry about your cookies”.
I breathe in deep taking in what’s left of the scrumptious smell. I feel calmer.
After about 30 second with my eyes closed, I open them to find my mom smiling at me with this knowing look in her eyes. I blush and tell her it’s okay about the cookies. Though I do wish I could have eaten them, the sorrow in my mom’s eyes bothers me.
We finish cleaning the kitchen together and my mom uses the house phone to call our plumber. Someone finally answers but she sounds disappointed. After a short conversation, Mom hangs up the phone.
“What’s wrong”? I ask.
Our plumber, Frank, is taking his wife and kids out of town for a family reunion and vacation. They left yesterday and won’t be back for almost two weeks. Unfortunately this cannot wait to be fixed. I guess I’ll call the human plumber in town.”
It is not uncommon for us to sometimes contact the local humans to help fix something in our community, but we usually do things ourselves. Not many humans know of the existence of supernatural creatures. Plus when they leave town to come about an hour out into the middle of the woods; they are often confused and think we’re some kind of cult or something.
My mom sighs. I know she doesn’t like involving humans. Some of them ask too many questions. She goes ahead and gets the phone book out anyway. It only takes a couple of minutes before she is back on the phone dialing a number.
I watch her closely as I use my hearing to tune into the voice on the other end.
“Sexton and Son Plumbing. How May we help you?” It was a woman’s voice.
“Yes ma’am. My name is Lucy Blackburn and I have a burst pipe.”
I kind of zone out after that. My mom always gives a fake name when it comes to the humans. She says it’s an extra layer of protection for us.
After a few minutes she hangs up and explains Mr. Sexton will be out this Friday to fix the sink. She’s happy since it’s Wednesday and she won’t have to wait long.
I clear my throat to get my mom’s attention. Our homecoming is this Saturday and I have yet to get my dress for the dance. She smiles.
“Yes darling?”
“Mom I really need to get a dress. My friends all have theirs and I don’t have one yet.”
All my friends are going in their favorite colors and I want to find the perfect dress in my favorite color; sky blue. My mom laughs.
“Ria. As soon as you come home from school Friday, we’ll go shopping.”
She leans in and kisses my head. I just beam up at her. I enjoy going out with my friends to do things, but I’ve got a special bond with both of my parents. My mom is always there for me, and as I’ve grown, she’s been more of a friend to me in many ways, but still balances being my mom too. Besides, this woman knows more about fashion than I do.
“Thanks mom, I love you.” I run down the hallway to my room. I smile. I just turned 18 at the beginning of September and it’s now the end of September! I may find my mate soon. Maybe just like my parents. Since I’m an only child my dad wants to start training me to become the next Alpha of our pack. He also wants to wait until I graduate high school and possibly get some college in; especially any schooling that would enable me to be a better leader.
I don’t really want to be the next alpha. I’ve always hoped to find my mate before it comes to that so I can lead beside him. I’m even open to the idea of stepping down for another to take charge.
I sigh. It’s not likely that my dad will allow that. Most packs prefer to keep generations of family alphas. There are always instances, though rare, when an alpha is unfit and another must step in. I sit down at my desk and flip open my homework and begin. I’m glad that I’m finally a senior. I can’t believe that I’ll be graduating soon and I’m finally an adult. I leave my desk to lay on my bed for a moment. I close my eyes and imagine finding my mate. The moment our eyes meet and we run to one another to embrace. What will it feel like to have his arms wrapped tight around me? What will he smell like? I’m lost in my day dreaming, until a booming voice startles be back to reality.
“Lucy, Maria! Why is the front door open?!”
Julio POV
I get to the Alpha Suite and find the door to my apartment wide open. I start to barge in when I hear my wife humming in the kitchen. I take a deep breath in, but there are no odd scents to be detected. So I walk through the door and yell for my wife and daughter. Instantly my Lucy is gliding through our home toward me, and she is wet.
“What in the world happened to you?” I ask.
“I had a little incident in the kitchen.” She paused. “And it ruined Maria’s cookies I made for her.” My wife pouted.
I grinned. I know how much that darling daughter of mine loves her cookies. I chuckled.
“Well honey you can always fix her some more tomorrow.”
“No” she sighs. “It will have to wait until the plumber can fix it.”
I take my shoes off and hang up my jacket.
“So when can Frank come?” I inquire.
“Frank is on vacation and will be gone for almost 2 weeks. I had to call a human plumber from town. He’ll be here Friday!” Lucy is thrilled she won’t have to wait for Frank.
I’m not too fond of the idea of a human coming, especially into our personal space, but it happens on occasion. I don’t personally have a problem with the humans, they just misjudge us, and sometimes that causes unnecessary problems.
“Okay sweetie. Please keep an eye on him when he comes.”
With that I give her a kiss and go to shower.
I have a lot on my mind. There is a good size pack with a viscous leader going around devouring smaller and weaker packs. I hope Maria finds her mate soon. We’re fine as of right now. We’re an average size pack, but we’re strong and have plenty of strong allies. As long as Maria’s mate is a strong leader we’ll be fine.
