Noah’s POV
“Mom, you know I’m not comfortable going all the way out there!”
My mom just got off the phone with a Lucy Blackburn saying she had a burst kitchen pipe that needed to be fixed ASAP. I watch my my mom, with guilt instantly feeling me. She’s exhausted. Between taking care of my dad, who’s health started going down hill last year and has worsened since this past July, and still trying to aid me in keeping the plumbing business going, I’m worried how much more she can handle.
“Noah. Honey, I know this particular area is different from what you are accustomed to, but you know how to fix this problem and we need the money. I’m sure these people are pleasant and you’ll be just fine.”
She offers me a smile and I can see in her eyes how uncomfortable she is about sending me out there. I smile back and agree to go.
“Thank you sweetie. You know how much your dad and I love you. I don’t even know what we would have done without you, and I’m sorry we’ve put this burden on you”.
I walk over to hug my mom. They’re not burdens on me. My parents have done everything in their power to love me and make sure I’m happy. I’ve watched them show so much love for our little town here in the Appalachian mountains and shower the people in this community with the kind of care they themselves would want. I’ve always looked up to my parents but never more than I have in the last year. My dad became sick with cancer and though he was able to work for a while, this past summer, he developed an infection due to his compromised immune system. He hasn’t been the same since.
Where he used to could work some and show me what to do, now, he can barely even get out of the bed most days. I just recently turned 20, but last year when I had just started in the community college in a near by town, my mom called to tell me the news. My heart had sunk. Mom told me dad was pushing himself but needed help with the business. I had already been shown some things growing up since I would often go with my dad as a teen to do jobs. I had just started a job myself to help pay for my college and small room I was renting. I had looked so forward to doing this. I wanted to be a teacher, since I adore kids. I’ve often babysat for neighbors and always wanted siblings but it didn’t happen.
I remember taking a couple of days after that phone call to resign from both school and my new job. Hey, at least I’d learn a trade.
Dad had been doing pretty good. He was weak and stayed nauseous. He was a trooper; pushing himself to go to jobs with even when I was the one working. Until this nasty infection took control, he made the best of everything. He tries to always keep a smile on when my mom and I are around, but the light doesn’t quite reach his eyes anymore.
Shaking my head to clear these sad thoughts, I become anxious when my mind keeps playing all the rumors in my head about the “castle” in the woods. I’ve heard the people are into satanism and that they like to summon demons. I’ve heard they’re like wrong turns, corrupted from radiation and inbreeding. Whatever it is, we don’t often see them in town and none of their kids go to our school. Anyways I try not to think about it and go on about my day. Friday will be here soon enough and I guess I’ll get to see for myself what all the talk is really about.
Friday Afternoon
I pull my old, sky blue Chevy pickup into a parking space. It took me about an hour to drive into the MIDDLE of the woods! On my way in, I could have sworn I saw a demon lurking in the trees, but I’m sure it’s my mind playing tricks on me. Though this building doesn’t exactly resemble a castle, it’s big. Reminds me of an inn? Maybe a motel? Peering up at the house, it appears to sparkle from the rays of sun streaming through the trees. To me it looks a bit like a mix of black and gray. I like it personally. There are so many windows I can’t even count, but it does have 2 stories, unless there’s also a basement hiding.
Anyway I walk up to the front door and knock. A young girl, with a long braid answers the door. I tell her I’m the plumber for the 3pm appointment for a Mrs. Lucy Blackburn. For a minute it’s like she’s staring off into space as her eyes appear to glaze over. I ask her if she’s okay and she doesn’t respond. Just a few seconds go by and she smiles and tells me to follow her.
The little maid walks me into an open space of this massive home. I take in a breath as I look around. There are a few people walking around eyeing me. And man I feel out of place here. I’m only around 5 foot 10, but these men seem to all be at least 6 feet or taller. And their muscles are HUGE. Like, are all these people on steroids or something. Feeling self conscious, I turn my gaze down and that’s when I notice my dirty work boots against the polished marble floors.
I finally look up as we begin to ascend some stairs. There are two sets right across from where we walked in, and sitting on either side of an elevator. We reach the top and I realize we can’t see the open foyer anymore. There are three different hallways. One going side to side with doors at each end and one hallway leading further into the back of the building. The young maid leads me toward the back. I notice as we reach the door there is a plaque above reading, Alpha Suite. I’m confused. What is an Alpha Suite? Does that mean this is the people with more money? I don’t have more time to ponder when the door opens and one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen in my life appears. I take in her perfect light skin, piercing green eyes, and long dark curls. It’s her smile that takes the spotlight though. It’s almost as if her smile is the total essence of comfort.
“Thank you for bringing Mr. Sexton up here Lori.”
She sweetly smiles at the young maid.
“You’re welcome Luna! If you need me, I won’t be far.” And with that, Lori bows her head and walks back the way we just came. Luna? Who are these people? The beautiful woman turns her head back to me. “I am Lucy Blackburn. Please come in Mr. Sexton.” She then steps aside so I may enter into her home.
“Ma’am, if you will, just call me Noah. My dad is Mr. Sexton.”
She gives me that radiant smile of hers. I instantly feel calmer for some reason.
“Of course, Noah. I thought you looked a bit young. Are you related to Mr. Sexton?”
“Yes ma’am, I am. I’m his son. I hope you don’t mind that I’ve come in his place. He’s not feeling well at the moment.”
The beautiful Mrs. Blackburn looks at me with this glint in her eye.
“Young man. I have no problem at all with you fixing my pipes as long as you know what you’re doing. I highly doubt you’d be here if your dad didn’t think you could handle the job. I do hope he begins to feel better.”
I thank her and assure her I’m more than capable. With that, she shows me to the kitchen, where the problem began. She then leaves me with a glass of lemonade and excuses herself.
I look around this magnificent kitchen, hoping I don’t get it too dirty. I then take a sip of lemonade and get my tools set up to work. I’ve only been working a short time when I hear the front door open and close. The next sound I hear has got to be the most amazing sound in the whole world. Maybe an angel lives here too?
“Mom? I saw a sky blue truck outside. Who does it belong to?”
I hear the voice coming closer, along with soft footsteps. I peek up over the island to get a better look at who the voice belongs to. As I do a young gorgeous girl walks into the kitchen. She has to be the daughter of Mrs. Blackburn. They favor too much. But this girl is more beautiful. I don’t recall at the moment ever seeing anyone alive that can compare to this young woman. Her tan skin is calling to me to caress it. Those luscious, plump pink lips: I want to taste them. Maybe they taste like strawberries. Mmm, that’s my favorite flavor. Those eyes remind me of her mother’s, and her dark curls are bouncing gently around her. I’m instantly jealous for some reason. Of her hair!! What is wrong with me? I want to be the one to hold her, touch her. I don’t even know this girl!
She is sniffing the air like she smells something delicious. I look around but don’t see anything that should cause her to react this way. When I turn my attention back to her, I’m entranced. She’s gazing at me like I’m the only man in the world to her. I see a hunger, but surely I’m imagining things. I didn’t even realize I had fully stood up yet from my hiding spot behind the island until her mom walks in searching for something through a purse on her arm.
“Maria, I’m here are you ready to go?”
I snap out of my trance when I hear Mrs.Blackburn speak. Maria? I was right, an angel does live here. When Maria doesn’t respond to her mom, Mrs. Blackburn looks up at her daughter. She looks from Maria to me and back. A look of shock, then interest develops on her perfect features. She then introduces us.
“Maria, this is Noah Sexton, the plumber. Noah, this is my lovely daughter Maria.”
There is a look of confusion that flashes through Maria’s pretty eyes before she asks, Mr. Sexton?”
