The next morning, Adrian arrived at Knight Holdings earlier than usual. Although he had a full schedule ahead of him, his thoughts kept drifting back to Elena.
He had made up his mind.
Without wasting another minute, he got into his car and instructed his driver to head to the café where Elena worked.
Just as Elena was about to enter the café for her morning shift, a familiar voice called her name.
"Miss Brooks."
She turned around in surprise.
"Mr. Knight?"
She looked around, almost expecting him to be speaking to someone else.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
"I was hoping we could talk," Adrian replied calmly.
Elena hesitated for a moment before nodding.
"All right."
Adrian led her to a quiet coffee shop a short distance from the café. They chose a table by the window where they could speak without being interrupted.
For a few seconds, silence filled the air.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
"I have a favor to ask."
Elena looked at him curiously.
"A favor?"
He nodded.
"There's a charity gala this weekend. It's an important event for my company, and everyone is expected to attend with a date."
He paused before continuing.
"I don't have anyone I want to take."
Elena listened quietly.
"So..." Adrian said, meeting her eyes, "I'd like you to come with me."
Elena froze.
"Me?"
"Yes."
She could hardly believe what she had just heard.
How could an ordinary university student and part-time waitress attend such an elegant event with one of the richest men in Los Angeles?
It felt impossible.
Yet, deep inside, she couldn't deny that his invitation made her heart flutter.
Before she could answer, Adrian noticed that her smile quickly faded.
"You seem worried," he said. "Is something bothering you?"
Elena forced a small smile.
"It's nothing."
Adrian gently shook his head.
"I don't think that's true."
For a long moment, Elena remained silent.
Then she lowered her eyes.
"My father is seriously ill," she said softly. "He needs heart surgery as soon as possible, but my family can't afford it."
She quickly looked up.
"I'm not telling you this because I want your money. I just... I've been carrying it alone for so long."
Adrian admired her honesty.
Most people he knew would have immediately asked him for help.
Elena hadn't.
He leaned back in his chair, thinking carefully.
Then an idea came to him.
"What if we make a deal?"
Elena looked at him in confusion.
"A deal?"
"I'll pay for your father's surgery and all the hospital expenses."
Her eyes widened.
"In return, I want you to attend the charity gala with me."
Elena's heart raced.
It sounded simple.
Too simple.
A thousand questions rushed through her mind.
What if he expects something more from me? What if this isn't just about one evening?
She searched Adrian's face for any sign of dishonesty.
Instead, she found only calm sincerity.
After a long silence, she took a deep breath.
"I'll do it."
A faint smile appeared on Adrian's face.
"Thank you."
He reached into his pocket and handed her one of his business cards.
"Give me your phone number."
Elena wrote it down on the back of the card and handed it back.
"I'll have a gown and everything you'll need delivered before the weekend," Adrian said as he stood.
"You don't have to worry about anything."
"Thank you, Mr. Knight," Elena said sincerely.
As Adrian walked back to his car, he felt an unfamiliar sense of relief.
For reasons he still couldn't explain, he was looking forward to seeing Elena again.
Meanwhile, Elena stood outside the café holding his business card tightly.
She had agreed to one evening.
She never imagined that a single decision would change the course of her life forever.
