Chapter two

755 Words
A Stranger in the Woods Aria stumbled through the forest, her tears mixing with the mud on her dress. Her chest felt like it had been ripped apart, and every step away from the Crescent Moon Pack pressed that pain deeper into her bones. “She’s gone… rejected… abandoned…” her wolf whispered, a soft voice inside her mind, shaking with grief. “I know,” Aria sobbed. “I… I feel it. Everywhere.” “We can’t stay here,” her wolf said urgently. “They’ll hunt us down if we linger. You need to move.” “But I don’t know where to go,” Aria said, voice trembling. She sank to her knees, clutching a muddy root for balance. “Damien… he rejected me. Everyone… they laughed. I’m nothing.” “No,” the wolf snapped gently. “You’re more than that. Don’t let him—don’t let them—decide who we are. Come on, Aria. Up.” She tried to stand, her legs shaking, but another stumble sent her sprawling onto the wet leaves. The forest around her seemed alive, shadows stretching like claws. Her wolf growled low in her mind. “Wait… someone’s coming,” it warned. A figure stepped from the darkness—a tall, imposing man with sharp features and eyes that glowed faintly gold in the moonlight. His presence pressed against her like the forest itself had narrowed around him. “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he said, voice low and calm, yet carrying a weight that made Aria flinch. “Who… who are you?” she stammered, pressing herself against a tree for support. “Name’s Kael,” he said. “You’re lucky I found you before something worse did.” Her wolf hissed softly, alert. “He’s… strong. But he’s not here to hurt you.” “I… I just need to get out,” Aria whispered. “I… I can’t stay here.” Kael crouched slightly, offering his hand. It was large, firm, unyielding. “Then take my hand. I’ll help you.” Her wolf growled in approval. “Trust him, Aria. We don’t have a choice.” She hesitated, then let him pull her to her feet. He steadied her with ease, his grip strong but not cruel. The forest floor was slippery and uneven, but Kael guided her carefully, moving through the trees like he had done this a thousand times. “Where are we going?” she asked, voice small. “Somewhere safe,” Kael replied simply. “You’ll rest there. Clean up. Eat. Then we figure out the next step.” “Safe?” her wolf echoed in disbelief. “We haven’t been safe since Damien—” “Quiet,” Aria said sharply, brushing the wolf’s words away. She didn’t want to argue with herself right now. Not when every heartbeat reminded her how alone she felt. The forest opened into a small clearing. A modest cabin stood there, smoke curling from its chimney, lights glowing warmly inside. Kael led her to the door and pushed it open. Inside, the air was warm and smelled faintly of herbs and firewood. A blanket and some water were set on a table. Aria sank into the nearest chair, her body trembling. “You can drink,” Kael said, keeping his tone neutral. “You’ve been running and crying. You need it.” Her wolf murmured, “Finally… someone who’s not judging us.” Aria took the cup he offered, sipping carefully. The warmth spread through her chest, easing some of the tightness. She felt her wolf sigh in relief. Kael stood silently for a moment, his eyes scanning the forest outside the windows. “I’ll keep watch,” he said finally. “You rest tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll decide where you go next.” Aria looked at him, hesitant. “Why are you helping me?” Kael’s gaze didn’t waver. “Because you needed help. That’s reason enough.” “Simple,” her wolf whispered. “No speeches, no lectures. Just help.” Aria let herself lean back in the chair, exhaustion finally overtaking the storm inside her. Her wolf curled close to her mind, comforting, protective. For the first time since Damien rejected her, she felt… safe. Kael remained by the window, silent but watchful. The night stretched on, quiet except for the soft crackle of the fire. And as Aria drifted toward a fitful sleep, her wolf whispered one last thing: “We’ll survive this. Together.”
