Chapter 2: Coffee and Coincidences

913 Words
The following afternoon, Olivia stood outside the coffee shop, her fingers curling around the strap of her purse as she watched people filter in and out. She had second-guessed herself three times already, almost deleting Alex’s message with an excuse that she was “too busy with work.” But something in his last response—I’ll be the guy wearing the green jacket, pretending not to be nervous—had felt surprisingly sincere. Maybe this was what she needed. Olivia tugged at the hem of her sweater, her nerves building as she glanced at her reflection in the glass door. Casual but not careless, she thought. Like I just happened to look this good. It was the same outfit she wore when she needed a boost of confidence: her favorite dark jeans, ankle boots, and the sweater that Nora claimed “did wonders for her eyes.” With a deep breath, she pushed open the door, the scent of freshly ground coffee beans and cinnamon wrapping around her like an old friend. She scanned the tables, her heart pounding as she spotted the green jacket. Alex was leaning back in his chair, glancing down at his phone. He looked even better in person—taller, with a presence that drew her in, his eyes lifting to meet hers as if he’d felt her arrive. “Olivia, right?” He stood up, smiling, and for a moment, the rest of the room faded into the background. His voice was warm, relaxed, and somehow familiar, even though they were strangers. “That’s me.” She forced a smile, hoping her nerves didn’t show. “Nice to meet you… in real life.” As they settled into their conversation, Olivia found herself laughing more than she had in months. Alex was charming, but not in the way Liam had been. Liam’s charm had always felt polished, too perfect, like a script he had memorized. Alex’s jokes were a little awkward, his stories full of self-deprecating humor that made her feel at ease. He had this way of leaning in when she spoke, his eyes attentive, making her feel like she was the only person in the room. For a moment, Olivia allowed herself to believe that this could be simple, easy. Maybe it was possible to meet someone who was genuinely interested, who wasn’t carrying a truckload of baggage or hidden agendas. But as they talked, a flicker of doubt crept into her mind—a whisper that told her things couldn’t be this perfect. “So, what made you try the app?” she asked, keeping her tone light. “I mean, everyone has a story, right?” Alex paused, his smile faltering just for a second. “Yeah, I guess you could say that.” He looked down at his coffee cup, tracing the rim with his finger. “I was in a long relationship too. It didn’t work out, and… well, here I am.” Olivia’s heart sank a little. She could feel the wall between them, the one everyone put up when they were trying to protect themselves. She knew that wall well—she had built one just like it. But there was something else in his eyes, something that made her want to push a little further, to see what lay beyond the easy smiles and small talk. “Well, I’m glad you did,” she said softly, her eyes meeting his. “Sometimes, starting over isn’t as bad as it seems.” He smiled again, and for a moment, everything felt right. But then her phone buzzed—a reminder from Nora. Olivia glanced down, seeing the message flash across the screen: Call me when you’re done. I want to hear everything, but be careful, okay? She hesitated, feeling a strange unease settle in her chest. Alex noticed her shift, his expression changing as if he could sense her hesitation. “Everything okay?” “Yeah, just my best friend checking in,” she said with a small laugh, trying to shake off the feeling. “She’s kind of protective.” “Sounds like a good friend.” He smiled, but his eyes had that guarded look again. “It’s nice to have someone looking out for you.” “Yeah,” Olivia said, and she meant it. But as she put her phone away, she couldn’t help but wonder why Nora’s words made her feel uneasy. She had told Nora about Alex, of course, but the way Nora had reacted—Another one from the app? You really think it’s different this time?—had stuck with her. They spent the next hour talking, but as they said goodbye, Olivia felt a nagging doubt, like a shadow she couldn’t shake. Alex hugged her, his warmth lingering long after they parted ways. “I had a great time, Olivia. Let’s do this again?” “Definitely.” She smiled, and for a moment, she believed it. But as she walked away, she glanced back over her shoulder, catching a glimpse of Alex through the window. He was on his phone again, his face serious, his expression different from the easy smile he had given her just moments ago. Her mind raced. Don’t read into it, she told herself. It’s just one date. But as she walked to her car, she couldn’t ignore the feeling that she had just stepped into something far more complicated than she had imagined.
