I get a call from Aidan to “play nice” when I get home.
My father has brought some girl home, and we’re having a discussion about it over dinner. Just great. My father who doesn’t have time for any of his sons, decides to get another child he won’t pay attention to. I’m driving home, clenching the staring wheel as I speed down the highway. I reached the driveway and stepped out of the car. I see my brothers’ cars parked. Dad really called all of us down. The twins pull up right behind me as dad's latest fling opens the door with her curls bouncing everywhere.
“Zane, sweetheart” she chirps
I dont even acknowledge her as I push past, heading straight towards Aidan's room. Just before I reach the door, dad steps into my path.
“Hey dad” I grumbled, trying to walk towards Aidan's room.
“Zane, wait up” he calls out, stopping me dead in my tracks.
His eyes darken
“She’s new. She’s scared. Be nice.”
He warns me, knowing my brothers and I wouldn’t be the first to accept her with open arms. I briefly nodded, rushing past him and opening Aidan's door.
“Have you seen Ella?” I ask, leaning on his desk.
“Her name is Bella”, he corrects. Then, without looking away from his screen, he starts listing these details.
“No record of her father.
She has been living under the pretense that her mother is still alive.
No record of any other family members”
He adds.
“And you got this how?” I question, raising one eyebrow.
Aidan just shrugs, his face blank, and continues pulling up photos from her school. I glance at the screen, trying to make sense of why Dad would bring her here. It’s not like she’s his daughter.
Before I can voice my thoughts, the twins walk in.
“Dad wants us all down for dinner,” one of them announces.
I roll my eyes. Hard. This was going to be fun.
