*War"*

--- *1:17 AM - KINGSLER TOWER, 43RD FLOOR* The city looked like it was bleeding. Red lights from police cars. Sirens. Smoke from the docks 3 miles away. Daniel stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Shirt off. Bandage on his ribs from last week. Another one now, fresh. In his hand: a tablet. On it: the video. Ariel. Him. 3 nights ago. He deleted it. Then I restored it. Then deleted it again. "They have copies," Marcus, his head of security said. "Four, minimum. Russians, Kyle’s men, and we don’t know who else." "Then buy them." Daniel’s voice was flat. Dead. "At what cost, Sir?" "Everything." His phone buzzed. Unknown number. Photo attached. It was Ariel. In the kitchen this morning. Coffee in her hand. Text below: `Pretty. Shame if something happened to her. Come alone to Pier 17 or we send this to every news site. -K` Kyle. Daniel threw the tablet across the room. It shattered. "Get the team," he said. "We’re going to war." "Sir, with respect, that’s what they want. To pull you out—" "I said WE’RE GOING." He grabbed a gun. I checked it. And for the first time in 3 years, Daniel Kingsley didn’t care if he died. Serena looked good in orange. Too good. Like she planned it. Across the glass: Kyle. Arm in a sling. Jaw bruised. "They arrested me for kidnapping," she said. Smiling. "Imagine." Kyle didn’t smile. "You said this would be clean." "It will be." She slid a manila envelope under the glass. "Open it." Inside: DNA results. Lab header. Official stamp. `PATERNITY TEST - KINGSLEY, D. & DOE, S.` `RESULT: 0% MATCH. SUBJECT IS NOT THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER.` Kyle frowned. "The baby wasn’t his?" Serena leaned in. Voice low. "The baby was mine. I was pregnant. 3 months. I terminated it after he chose the maid." Kyle’s eyes widened. "But the hospital records are still there. And with a few edits..." She tapped the paper. "Now it says I’m still pregnant. And that he’s the father. And that he cheated and abandoned us." Kyle got it. "The board. The press. The Russians." "Exactly." Serena sat back. "While Daniel’s busy playing soldier, his company tanks. His name is ruined. And when he’s weak..." She looked at the door. "...we take the girl." Kyle nodded. Slow. "I want to be the one who breaks her." "You can have her," Serena said. "After I’m done." The guard called time. Serena stood. Blew Kyle a kiss. "Phase 2 starts tonight, baby." I couldn’t sleep. Not with guards at every door. Not with Daniel gone. My phone buzzed. Unknown. Picture: Daniel. On his knees in a warehouse. Blood on his white shirt. Gun to his head. Text: `Your knight is losing. Come alone to Pier 17 or we finish him. You have 20 minutes. -S` S. Serena. I looked at the guard. "I need to go." "Miss, Mr. Kingsley said no one leaves—" "Then don’t stop me." I ran. Heels. Dress. No plan. Just the thought: _He took a bullet for me before. I’m not letting him do it again A taxi. 15 minutes. Pier 17. Abandoned. Fog. And there he was. Six men. Guns. Daniel in the middle. Bleeding from his side. Still standing. Like a king refusing to fall. "You brought her," the Russian said. Grinning. "Good." Daniel didn’t look at me. "Let her go." "After we get what we came for." Footsteps behind me. I turned. Kyle. And Serena. Out of prison. In a black coat. Smiling. "Hello, Ariel," Kyle said. "Miss me?" "Shut up," I said. Serena walked to Daniel. Looked him up and down. "Tsk. You look terrible, darling." She held up the DNA papers. "Look what I found." Daniel didn’t react. "Read it," she said to me. "Out loud." My hands shook. I took it. `...0% probability of paternity...` The words blurred. "See?" Serena said. Sweet. "He lied to you. There was never a baby. There was never an heir. You were just a distraction while he played with me." She touched Daniel’s face. He didn’t flinch. "And now he’s going to pay for choosing you." Daniel finally spoke. To me. Not her. "Don’t believe her." "Why shouldn’t I?" My voice broke. "You lied about everything else." Something flickered in his eyes. Hurt. Then gone. "Because," he said quietly. "If I let you believe that, you’ll hate me. And if you hate me, you’ll live." Gun c****d. "Enough talking," the Russian said. "Take the girl. Kill him." They moved. Daniel moved faster. He grabbed the closest man, used him as a shield. Gunshots. Screaming. Chaos. "ARIEL, RUN!" he roared. I didn’t. I ran to him. A man grabbed my arm. Dragged me back. "Get off—" Daniel shot him. Point blank. Then he was on me. Pulling me behind him. "Are you hurt?" "No—" Another gunshot. Daniel grunted. Staggered. Blood bloomed on his shoulder. "Daniel!" "I’m fine," he lied. "Stay down." He fired back. Again. Again. Until the clicks meant he was out. The last Russian was on us. Knife out. Daniel threw himself over me. I waited for the pain. It didn’t come. Marcus burst in with 10 men. More gunshots. Then silence. Sirens. Medics. Flashlights. Daniel was on the ground. Me on top of him. His blood on my dress. "Don’t you dare," I whispered. "Don’t you dare close your eyes." He smiled. Barely. "Told you... I’d keep you breathing." "Stop talking." "Ariel." He touched my face. Cold fingers. "The DNA. It’s fake. I swear. I would never—" "Shut up. Save your strength." Paramedics pulled him away. I screamed. Fought them. They sedated me. Last thing I saw: Serena in handcuffs. Smiling at me. Mouthing: `Checkmate.` I woke up to beeping. My wrist was bruised from the rope. Daniel’s room was across the hall. Marcus was there. "He’s alive. Two bullets. Surgery went well." I nodded. Couldn’t speak. My phone was on the table. News alert: `BILLIONAIRE DANIEL KINGSLEY SHOT IN GANG SHOOTOUT. DNA SCANDAL ROCKS KINGSLEY CORP.` Below it: the DNA paper. Leaked. My hands shook. The door opened. Daniel. In a wheelchair. IV in his arm. Shoulder bandaged. He looked like hell. "You shouldn’t be up," I said. "You shouldn’t have come," he said back. Silence. He rolled closer. "The DNA is fake," he said. "I have the real one. From 3 months ago. She wasn’t pregnant, Ariel. She lied." "Why should I believe you?" "Because I have no reason to lie to you anymore." He reached out. Took my hand. "I went to war for you. I’d do it again. I’d die for you." I pulled my hand away. "That’s the problem, Daniel. Everyone dies for me. My dad. Now you." I stood. "I need space." I walked out. --- *END HOOK:* That night. My guest room. The window is open. A note on my pillow. No name. `She’s not the only one with DNA. We have yours too. And your mother’s. Come alone to the docks tomorrow or we will use it. -K & S` Serena and Kyle. Together. And now they had my blood. ---
