Kelsey swallowed her feelings of disappointment and sadness and then looked up at him, her eyes sincere.
"Thank you for helping me again. I really appreciate it."
"Try to stay out of trouble next time. I really don't wanna hear more thanks from you," Nikolas replied, turning to meet her gaze with a calm, almost detached look.
He continued, "The world's a lot more complicated than you think, and not everything works out as simply as you'd hope. Playing the hero only brings more problems for yourself."
'That girl is well-behaved at school. She's still a young girl who's gone down the wrong path, after all,' Kelsey thought.
"I just wanted to help her," Kelsey explained, her voice shaky. "She's so young, and if no one steps in, her whole life could be ruined."
