After Adam received Jizelle’s text confirming she’d talked to Jojo, Adam and his grandparents left Bakersfield and arrived around noon in San Francisco. They would have arrived earlier but they had been forced to make a breakfast stop, a bathroom stop, and a stop to get Jojo another birthday present.
When they pulled in the garage at the Four Seasons, Adam hopped out. “You sure you’re going to be okay?”
“Yes, as I told your mother twice on the way up here. We are fine. Your grandfather and I will be fine.”
Adam checked the back seat of the Subaru. His grandfather was snoring, his mouth open.
