(Julian's POV) The encrypted file opened on my screen under the letterhead “BioGen Clinical Research.” I remembered the name from a news report I had barely watched, one about unregulated drugs and back-alley human trials. The report had called the company dangerous. I enlarged the first scanned page. The documents included a thick, multi-page liability waiver rather than the plasma-donation slips Mia had mentioned. BioGen accepted no responsibility for side effects up to and including “permanent disability or death.” Serena's signature appeared at the bottom of every page. The first was dated almost three years ago. Medical reports followed in date order. My hand stayed on the mouse while I read every line, because lifting it would have meant admitting I was afraid of the next page.
