CHAPTER FOUR

1200 Words
"How can I be so stupid? Oh, Enya, what have you done?" I chided myself, pushing my legs to run faster into the dark night, despite the growing ache. My heart pounded so fiercely that I feared it might burst from my chest. The chill of the night air bit at my skin, but I don't care. I need to get out of here. Tears threatened to spill over, blurring my vision, but I forced them back. "Crying won’t help you now. Keep it together, Enya. You need to be strong," I cautioned myself, even as my breath came in ragged gasps. I couldn't see anyone around but I knew the pack warriors on night shift would be on patrol, guarding the pack's border in case of any threats, and unfortunately, that included me. I need to figure out how to elude them, "I can't go back". I cringe at the thought of being dragged back to my parents. They wouldn't have any option but to report officially that I was marked by a werewolf from another pack as was the rule in moonglade pack. Any family who fails to report such an incident will be charged guilty of treason and deserves death. "No, my parents have been through enough because of me. They don't deserve this scandal. I’m doing them a favor by running away," I muttered under my breath, I’ve failed them enough. Reaching out mentally, I called Diana, my inner wolf. "I need your help, Diana. I don’t know where to go, but I can’t stay here." Her voice came soft and soothing in my mind, "Calm down, Enya. You're working yourself up too much over this. You did nothing wrong, after everything they've put you through, none of them deserve your loyalty." "But...but Diana, I’ve made a huge mistake. I got carried away," I admitted, feeling the weight of my actions crashing down on me as tears escaped me. Alas, I couldn't hold them much longer. "No, my dear, it wasn’t a mistake. I felt a strong pull towards him too. If it were a mistake, I shouldn't have felt something as well. And honestly, I enjoyed it," Diana’s voice filtered through, dreamy and distant as if reminiscing every touch. "Why do you sound so odd? Don't tell me you don't see the danger we’re in," I snapped in irritation, weary that she may make me lose focus. "Can you take us out of here? How do we escape the guards?" I pleaded. "I have a plan. Close your eyes and surrender to me. Trust me," she assured me calmly. Without hesitation, I closed my eyes and let Diana take control. I noticed, I changed immediately into wolf form and this time I felt no pain like the last shift. Gosh, Diana's fur is so magnificent under the moonlight. If she weren't mine, I'd be so jealous. I reveled in pride. We merged fully, our minds becoming one, and my vision sharpened. I could see clearly through the darkness, seems I was making use of her vision and everywhere was as clear as day in her eyes. Taking giant strides, Diana carries us further into the west side of the pack, her paws soft and silent as she weaves her way with no fear, even the darkness embraces her. When we got to the border, the pack guards were surprisingly asleep. I watched as Diana quietly halted and sized up the huge stone wall that marked Moonglade territory. It all happened so fast to my astonishment, she cleared the wall effortlessly with a graceful leap, landing softly on the other side. There is no way I will achieve that jump effortlessly like Diana did, she literally blew my mind away. "We're free!" I celebrated, twirling in joy inside her. The freedom felt exhilarating. Freedom at last!!... Feels good to be free. We continued running for hours, Diana was not showing any signs of stopping. Soon we heard distant sounds of cars driving by. Seems we've come to a highway. Diana slowed, and as we reached the roadside, she spoke. "It's time to come out now." I understood her unspoken message; we were out of our pack territory and had no clue which pack territory we were in. Most packs will immediately attack any wolf form they see near their border. It is believed werewolves are more fierce and dangerous in their wolf form. Transforming back into my human form, I found myself naked and vulnerable, the cold night air harsh against my bare skin. No clothes were in sight to cover me. I stood by the roadside, waving back and forth to cars driving past hoping for a ride but no one cared to stop. Instead, they all threw me judgemental glares and hastily rolled up their windows as if to rid themselves of me. I could almost hear their brain think "Is she crazy? Why is she out here alone and naked?" I wouldn't blame them, I understand not everyone would want to pick up a naked woman in the dead of the night. Just as I was about to give up, my head bent in shame. What's the need of escaping, if I end up dying out of cold? A moving van pulled up in front of me. "Hey," I heard a soft feminine voice call out "you need a ride?" Dazed and completely disoriented, I jerked my head in a nod. The driver, a woman in her fifties swung the van doors open, inviting me into the warmth of her car. As I climbed in, I noticed although she was driving an old car, it was well-maintained. She had on a simple floral dress, her silver-blonde hair tucked behind her ears. "You will need some clothes on," she noted, pointing to the glovebox. "There’s a pair of jeans, a shirt and jacket I keep handy in case I mess up my dress." She smiled warmly. Gratefully, I pulled out the neatly folded clothes and quickly dressed. They fit perfectly as if tailored for me. I could swear these were meant for me. There was something strange about this woman, it felt like she glowed. I stared in awe, her beauty felt so ethereal She turned her gaze to me "Were you robbed?" "No" I shook my head and turned my face toward the side window, avoiding her probing gaze. "Do you live around here?" "No"... I say in defeat, exerting every ounce of my control to keep my emotions in check. I don't want to embarrass myself in front of this kind lady. "I’m... just passing through." She waited a few minutes before asking, "Where are you headed?" “Wherever you’re going, It doesn’t matter,” I said in a brusque tone that discouraged further conversation. She nodded, seeming to understand my need for silence. "Everything will be alright, Enya. I’ll make sure of it," she reassured me, her voice soothing. My head whipped around. "Wait! How do you know my name?" Am I being kidn*pped? Alarm bells rang in my head. She returned a wide smile and strangely exhaustion overpowered me. Soon I drifted off in deep sleep as she kept driving.
