Chapter 5
~Venus~
I sat I front of a mirror as Ellie began to style my hair.
Ellie, was Matteo’s housemaid.
She oiled it and brushed it until it was smooth and shiny, flowing down my back.
Everything about my features looked so perfect, I guess that's what happens when you use expensive creams.
Although my hair was naturally fine and smooth, it wasn't always bad to try out hair creams as well.
After styling my hair, she brought out make up kits.
I couldn't possibly recall the last time I used make up on my face.
I didn't see the use in going to such great lengths to look beautiful.
But today being my wedding, it was only right I used it.
“You get to marry Matteo Inzaghi today. Many girls would die to be in your position.”
Ellie remarked breaking the silence between us.
“Not me though. I'm not marrying him by choice.”
I said sharply, disgust laced in my tone. If I didn't have a liability I won't mind running away right now.
But these men are dangerous and would do anything they can to get what they want.
Even kill Grannie, and I can't risk that.
But just as we were getting done with the make up, a figure suddenly barged into the room.
“Ellie, out now!!” The man ordered in a stern voice.
Ellie fled the room in a heartbeat, she seemed terrified.
But, I wasn't fazed by his mean demina, not in the slightest.
“So nice to finally meet the bride, and my soon to be sister in-law.”
The man grabbed a chair and set it across me. His piercing eyes met mine.
“I'm Lorenzo Inzaghi, Matteo’s brother.” he said, as he wore a hideous grin on his face.
“So, I guess you must be aware of how things go in this family since you chose to marry him right?”
“In case you don't, let me brief a little.
We are the Inzaghi family. We do terrible things to get what we want, and will kill anybody who gets in our way!”
Lorenzo said, his voice laced with menace.
I wasn't at all surprised by his words.
“But another thing you should know being part of this family is that, things get to go sideways atimes.
Your life is always at risk… “
and with that evil grin of his, he stood up and left the room.
I gave thought to his words for a little bit. But then again what was the need. It wasn't like I could back away from the wedding.
My life and equally my grannies is depending on this.
Soon after, Ellie walked back in.
“Ma’am it's time!”

The church was dimly lit, its grand chandeliers casting a soft golden glow over the rows of polished pews.
The heavy scent of roses filled the air, cloying and almost suffocating.
My dress clung uncomfortably to my skin, a masterpiece of ivory silk and lace designed to make me look like a princess.
I stood at the end of the aisle, my hand clutching the bouquet, my hands covered in sweat.
At the other end of the aisle, Matteo Inzaghi. Probably the devil himself.
He was dressed in a well tailored black suit. His hair curled back neatly.
I took gentle steps down the aisle, each step heavier than the other.
I could feel the piercing stares of the crowd on me. I was the center of attention, as every bride was on her wedding.
For most girls this was the day they dreamt of all their lives.
Not me though, I barely gave thought about marriage, but even in my wildest dreams I wouldn't have imagined getting married to a man I met yesterday and was about to kill me.
This felt more of a business transaction to me, than of a wedding.
My life for my freedom.
Still, I’d agreed to this marriage. What choice did I have? Grannies bills needed to be paid.
When I reached the altar, he extended his hand to me. It was steady, his palm warm against my skin.
The ceremony began, the priest’s voice echoing through the cathedral. I barely registered the words.
Instead, I focused on, Matteo on the sharp lines of his face.
I took a glances at the crowd present, and then my eyes met the cold stare of a man.
Lorenzo!!
He wore a frown on his face. Shouldn't a man be happy on his brother's wedding, why was his case the contrary.
Maybe he probably didn't like me.
I turned back to Matteo, watching the way his mouth barely curved when the priest asked him if he took me to be his wife.
He didn’t hesitate. “I do,” he said with calm certainty, as though the answer had been inevitable.
And then it was my turn. My throat tightened as I tried to push the words out.
I inhaled deeply, steadying my nerves, and opened my mouth to speak.
Then the world exploded.
The first crack of gunfire was like a thunderclap, so loud it stole the breath from my lungs.
For a split second, no one moved. It was as if time itself had frozen. And then, chaos.
Shouts erupted throughout the church, everyone scrambling to the exit.
Bullets filled the air.
Glass shattered somewhere behind me. I instinctively turned towards Matteo, he already had a pistol in his hand and fired at will.
He noticed my presence and shot out to grab me, but before I could take a step, pain exploded in my stomach.
”Argh!!”
I gasped. My hands flew to my abdomen, but they came away with something warm and sticky. Blood. My blood.
The next moment, my legs buckled and I collapsed to the floor.
Above me, the world blurred. I could hear screams, frantic voices, footsteps pounding against the floor.
“Venus!”Someone called
my nam
e, it sounded like Matteo, but it felt so far away, like it belonged to a different world.
The last thing I saw before the darkness enveloped me, was the concerned face of Matteo over my body.
