Evelyn couldn't calm down at all. The rage inside her just kept building.
By early evening, Adeline pushed the door open and walked in.
Her voice was still so gentle. "Evelyn, have you calmed down now?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
Adeline sat down by her bed. "We didn't wanna hurt you either. If you hadn't snuck over to see Luca today, you never would've found out any of this...
"I came here to explain. We didn't mean to, you..."
"Didn't mean to?" Evelyn finally spoke.
"Yeah, I—"
Smack—
Evelyn swung her hand and slapped her right across the face.
Adeline clutched her cheek, completely stunned.
Her head was turned to one side, a red mark already blooming on her face, her eyes going teary in an instant.
"Evelyn... how could you hit me?"
"You stole my fiancé, violated medical ethics, and cut out my uterus just so you could have your way. Now I can never be a mom. Tell me, did you deserve that or not??"
Adeline's tears started falling. She covered her face, her voice trembling. "I didn't... that's not... I was just trying to save your life!"
"The k********g was your setup." Evelyn let out a cold laugh, each word sharp and clear. "You lured me there, had me knocked out, had me beaten within an inch of my life, and then you stood over me on that operating table and took my uterus with your own hands. And now you're telling me that was to save me?"
Adeline cried even harder, shaking her head, her lips quivering. "That's not how it was, just listen to me. I had nothing to do with that k********g. I didn't know any of that was gonna happen..."
The hospital room door suddenly flew open.
Luca strode in.
"Enough. Evelyn, that's enough. Adeline didn't do anything wrong, and you just hit her in public. Don't you think you're way out of line?"
Evelyn froze for a second.
Then she laughed.
"I'm out of line? Compared to what you two did to me, one slap is nothing!"
Luca frowned, his face darkening.
"Evelyn, I get that you're upset about losing your uterus. But if Adeline hadn't acted fast, you probably wouldn't have even made it off that table. She's not asking you to be grateful, but you're repaying her kindness with this? That's just heartless."
Repaying kindness with this.
Evelyn heard those words and thought it was the most ridiculous thing she'd ever heard.
"Luca, you're seriously twisting the truth here? But the cops aren't gonna buy whatever lies you two jerks come up with!"
Luca's face went completely cold.
"Oh really? Too bad the whole thing of you hitting Adeline was caught on camera. Who do you think people are gonna believe?"
Right after he said that, commotion started at the door.
More reporters came out of nowhere, hauling cameras and mics, swarming in and aiming straight at the room.
Luca pointed at Evelyn with a cold face. "The cops have already figured out that this whole k********g was staged by her and her alone. Now she's trying to frame Dr. Adeline Clarke, who's been nothing but helpful to her. And when Dr. Clarke refused to go along with it, she got violent. You wanna know what really went down? Ask her yourself!"
With that, he pulled Adeline into his arms and walked out of the room.
Evelyn was left behind in that room. She wanted to leave, but all those reporters surrounded her, firing questions about the k********g one after another.
Cameras flashed like crazy right in her face.
For a moment, she felt dazed.
She thought back to before.
Back then, everyone said she was just a spoiled rich girl, and without her family, she was never good enough for Luca.
Luca shot back at every single one of them online, even if it meant burning bridges with the whole media.
But now, he was the one dumping all that mud on her.
Through all those shaking lenses and blinding flashes, all she could see was Luca shielding Adeline into the car and driving off without so much as a glance back.
His caring and his indifference could not have been more obvious.
Evelyn swallowed the bitterness in her throat and faced the cameras, speaking slowly and clearly. "I had nothing to do with that k********g. It was all my fiancé and Adeline who set the whole thing up!"
Then she pulled out that family photo. "And right now, I'm calling off our engagement!"
The reporters gasped, going absolutely nuts. "What's going on here?"
"Are you saying your fiancé has been with Dr. Clarke all along, and they planned this k********g together, is that right?"
Evelyn nodded without hesitation. "Yes!"
After saying what needed to be said, she had the medical staff get her out of there and found her attending physician. "I need to sign a medical record sealing request."
Soon enough, the doctor brought her the form.
She signed it, and a weight lifted off her chest. From this point on, the hospital couldn't tamper with those records anytime soon.
After getting her wound treated, she dragged herself back to her room, exhausted, and crashed.
She didn't know how long had passed when she heard footsteps getting closer.
She kept her eyes shut.
A hand brushed gently across her forehead.
Evelyn opened her eyes.
Luca was sitting by her bed, his brow slightly furrowed.
He reached out to hold her.
But she dodged him.
Luca's hand froze in midair.
His expression visibly cooled, replaced by a kind of detachment she'd never seen on him before.
"Evelyn, if you hate Adeline and the kid so much, I can send them abroad. That way they won't be in your face. The wedding's in two days. Don't make a scene right now!
"Do you have any idea how much damage your rambling to those reporters today did to the Moretti family business?!"
Evelyn's heart dropped like a stone.
She stared at him, like she was looking at a stranger.
Back then, he'd gone through hell and back to win her over. He even got down on his knees and told her that if he ever had to choose between her and the whole world, he'd pick her.
Now what gave him the right to talk to her like this?
Evelyn curled her lips into a bitter smile. "I'm not making a scene, Luca. I'm officially telling you right now. The engagement is off."
Luca just stared at her, his eyes dark and terrifying. He didn't say another word.
He stood up, turned around, and left.
Evelyn lay alone in that empty room, her chest hurting so bad she could barely breathe.
She took a deep breath and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. She didn't even know when they started falling.
Maybe they'd been falling the whole time.
Her phone lit up.
Nora texted: [Got the birthday footage.]
She put the phone down and started organizing everything she could think of.
Outside the window, dawn was breaking.
She closed her eyes and forced herself to rest.
Because there was a much tougher fight waiting for her ahead.
Sure enough, the very next day, a statement went viral all over the internet.
