The Enemy Among Us

801 Words
Ariana stayed silent after hearing Damian's words. "The person you are looking for is closer than you think." The message repeated in her mind. Someone close. Someone who knew their plans. Someone who had access to their lives. That meant one thing. The enemy was not a stranger. It was someone inside their circle. "Where are you?" Damian's voice pulled her back. "I'm coming." "You don't have to." Ariana frowned. "Don't start." There was a brief silence. Then Damian said softly: "You still care." The words irritated her because they were true. "Don't misunderstand." "I'm not." "I just need answers." "I know." She ended the call. But the truth was harder to accept. No matter how much she tried to separate herself from Damian, their lives were still connected. The past they shared. The enemies they faced. The secrets they uncovered. Everything led them back to each other. --- When Ariana arrived at Henderson Group, the building was unusually quiet. Security officers moved around the entrance. Employees whispered among themselves. Everyone knew something serious had happened. Damian was waiting for her near his office. The moment he saw her, his expression softened. But he quickly hid it. Ariana noticed. She always noticed. "What happened?" Damian opened the office door. "See for yourself." Inside, nothing appeared damaged. No broken furniture. No missing files. Everything looked untouched. "Nothing was stolen?" "No." "Then why call me?" Damian walked toward his desk. "Because whoever entered wasn't looking for documents." He pointed at the wall. Ariana's eyes narrowed. A message had been written there. Not with paint. With a photograph. A photograph from three years ago. The night Ariana left. She stepped closer. Her face changed. Because the picture showed something she never saw. Damian wasn't with Victoria. He was arguing with her. And standing behind them... Was Richard Williams. Her father. Again. Ariana stared. "Where did you get this?" "It was left here." "By who?" "I don't know." She looked at Damian. "Someone wants us to see this." He nodded. "Exactly." Ariana studied the photograph. For years, she thought the story was simple. Damian betrayed her. Her father supported her. But now... Everything was upside down. --- Later that day, Ariana and Damian sat in a private meeting room. For the first time in years, they were working together. Not as lovers. Not as enemies. As two people searching for the truth. "I want to ask you something." Damian looked at her. "What?" "That night." He became serious. "What about it?" "Why were you arguing with Victoria?" Damian looked away. "Because I discovered her plan." "What plan?" "She wanted to use our relationship to gain access to both families." Ariana frowned. "Why didn't you tell me?" "Because I thought I could handle it." She looked at him. "And once again, you decided alone." Damian accepted the criticism. "Yes." Ariana sighed. "You really were impossible." A small smile appeared on his face. "Was?" She looked away. "Don't get comfortable." For a moment, the tension between them felt different. Less painful. Almost familiar. Then Damian's expression became serious again. "There is something else." "What?" "Victoria wasn't acting alone." Ariana looked at him. "Who helped her?" Damian hesitated. Then said: "Someone inside your family." --- That evening, Ariana returned to her office. She needed time. Her whole life had become a puzzle. Every answer created another question. Her father. Victoria. Damian. Elena. Who was telling the truth? Who was lying? Her phone suddenly received a message. This time, there was no warning. Only a location. And one sentence: "Come alone if you want to know why Damian lost you." Ariana stared at the screen. She knew it was a trap. A smart person would ignore it. But she wasn't only searching for answers anymore. She was searching for closure. --- The abandoned warehouse was located outside the city. Ariana arrived alone. Just as the message requested. Inside, the air was cold. Empty. "Hello?" Her voice echoed. Then footsteps appeared. Someone stepped out of the darkness. Ariana froze. Because she knew that face. Someone she thought had disappeared from her life. Someone she never expected to see again. "You're alive." The person smiled. "Surprised?" Ariana couldn't speak. Three years ago, this person was the missing piece of the entire story. The person who could explain everything. "Why are you here?" The smile disappeared. "Because Damian wasn't the one who betrayed you." Ariana's heart raced. "Then who was?" The person looked directly at her. "Your father." Silence. Ariana felt the pain return. But before she could ask another question, a sound came from behind her. A door closing. She turned. Someone had followed her. Someone else was inside the warehouse. And judging by the footsteps... They weren't there to talk. They were there to silence the truth. To be continued...
