The Aftermath
The heavy oak doors hadn't even fully closed behind them before a blinding wall of camera flashes struck.
The media storm outside St. Jude’s Cathedral was deafening. Dozens of reporters and paparazzi, tipped off weeks ago about the wedding of the season, were lined up three-deep behind the velvet ropes.
They had expected to capture photos of a smiling billionaire groom and his new heiress bride stepping out to greet high society. Instead, the doors burst open to reveal Julian Vanderholt exiting the church with a drenched, mysterious woman in a radiant black dress gripping his arm.
Shouts erupted instantly over the roar of the downpour.
"Mr. Vanderholt! Who is the woman in black?"
"Is the wedding called off?"
"Julian, did she just object to your marriage? Look this way!"
Julian didn't answer a single question. His expression was a mask of absolute calm, completely unfazed by the sudden chaos. Keeping his arm securely around Renée, he used his broad frame to shield her from the aggressive reporters pushing microphones past the security line.
He guided her swiftly down the wet marble steps and straight into the back of his sleek, blacked-out limousine idling at the curb. The chauffeur slammed the heavy door shut, instantly drowning out the shouting press and the pounding rain.
Inside the vehicle, the sudden silence was deafening.
Renée sank back into the plush leather seat, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her mind was spinning in a hundred different directions. As an artist, her eyes naturally tracked details—the precise, geometric stitching of the luxury leather, the sharp contrast of the bright city lights bleeding through the tinted windows, and the terrifyingly perfect symmetry of the man sitting across from her.
Just ten minutes ago, she was a desperate girl from Cleveland ready to tear down the man who ruined her life. Now, she was sitting across from one of the most powerful men in New York City.
She looked down at her damp, radiant black dress, then up at the stranger sitting opposite her.
Julian calmly reached over to a built-in screen on the limousine's center console and tapped the glass. A live entertainment news broadcast flashed to life, already showing aerial footage of the cathedral steps from just sixty seconds prior.
The anchor's voice filled the luxury cabin: "...breaking news from Midtown, where the multi-billion-dollar merger wedding between the Vanderholt and Cauldwell families has just been abruptly halted. Rumors are flying through Manhattan after an unknown woman disrupted the ceremony, only for Julian Vanderholt to leave his bride at the altar and exit with the intruder..."
Julian reached out and muted the volume. He turned his sharp grey eyes away from the screen and locked them directly onto Renée. The charming, teasing smile he had put on for the congregation was completely gone, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp focus.
"Now," Julian said, leaning back and crossing one tailored leg over the other. "Let's lay the cards on the table. My wedding is officially ruined, my father is likely having a stroke, and the media thinks you're my secret lover. Who exactly is Artem, and why did you think he was the one standing at my altar?"
Renée swallowed hard, clutching her hands tightly in her lap. Her artist's hands, usually stained with charcoal or paint, were currently trembling with the remnants of her fury. The weight of her situation was crashing down on her.
She had been so sure the leaked guest list pointed to this church, so sure she would find her lying fiancé here using her hard-earned money to buy his way into a life of luxury.
"I... I made a mistake," Renée stammered, her voice still trembling.
"I thought you were him. He took everything from me. He took three years of my life, my savings—money I earned selling my art and working grueling double shifts to protect my family. He vanished overnight. I was told he was getting married today at St. Jude's to an heiress."
Julian watched her closely, his calculating mind scanning her face for any signs of deception. He noticed the raw, genuine pain in her eyes, but more importantly, he noticed her fire. She wasn't just a victim; she was a creator, a fighter. And to a man like Julian, a fighter could be very useful.
"An heiress," Julian repeated slowly, a dark smile playing at the edge of his lips. "Well, you certainly found a wedding involving an heiress, just the wrong one. But your little disruption did me a massive favor. I had no intention of marrying Emilia Cauldwell. My father forced that arrangement to secure a luxury logistics merger I didn't want."
He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees, bringing his piercing gaze closer to hers. "You want your money back, and you want revenge on this Artem. I want to permanently break free from my father's corporate strings and find out who leaked my private guest list to an artist from out of town. It seems to me, partner, that we have a common enemy: the people who set this day in motion."
Renée stared at his outstretched hand. The alliance he was offering was dangerous, spinning her deeper into a world of high-society deception she didn't understand. But as she thought about Artem escaping with her life and her art, her eyes hardened.
