Chapter 7
You know what the s**t thing about death is? It’s that you affect a lot of people. And it’s not like you’re just hurting the people you know and love, but you’re affecting random strangers who you probably met once whilst in the library or some s**t. So how was Blu hurting me? After seeing her in vegetable form, I couldn’t get her outta my head. Resulting in, her constantly being around, making me look seven different kinds of crazy.
“Why don’t you just stop thinking!” Blu was pacing again. A habit which was getting more annoying than her nails in my hoodie.
“It’s cute, you think I haven’t tried that yet.” It’s hard dealing with a hysterical dying girl when all you want to do is sleep off the strain of scumming and getting tackled into the dirt all week. And you’d think in your – temporary – home, you’d be allowed to take off your own cloths and chill.
“Kai! –“ You thought wrong. “Don’t strip! Keep your clothes on.” Blu warned, her eyes bulged.
Just before I made a smart ass remark, I heard Livvy call from my door. “Kai!” she whined before walking in like she owned the place. “Kai, please can I have some ice- cream and – “ When Livvy paused, I knew something was up, because her eyes were wide and her eyes were on Blu who was busy laying on the bed looking up at the ceiling. “Kai is that your girlfriend?” She asked.
And just like a rocket Blu shot up and stared at Livvy. Livvy’s messy hair swayed as she moved her weight from one foot to the other awaiting my answer. “Liv, what can you see?” I asked.
Livvy shrugged carelessly. “A pretty girl on your bed. She looks like her mouth is about to fall onto the floor.” Livvy placed her hands in front of mouth to stop herself from giggle. And this time when I turned to look at Blu, her shock was still on her face. “She wearing your hoodie like those girls do in the movies.” Livvy smiled. “Hi I’m Livvy.” She waved.
Blu finally found her tongue and said. “I’m Blu.”
Livvy’s grin widened. “That’s my favourite colour. It’s Kai’s favourite colour too. What’s your favourite colour?”
“Uh-uhm- Green.” She stuttered.
Livvy jumped. “Just like Kai’s eyes.” Livvy turned back to me. “Please, please, please can I have ice-cream and milktart?”
When Livvy begged like this it would take a man with a heart made of stone to deny her. “I’ll give some if you can spell ‘ice-cream’ and ‘milktart’?” I bargained, I didn’t like Livvy having sweet things after five, even if it was a Friday night.
Livvy pouted. “Fine.” She huffed. “ I-C-E, with the little line thingy, C-R-E-A-M. And M-I-L-K-T-A-R-T.” Usually she gets at least on letter wrong. I accepted defeat, taking her into the kitchen. Picking her up, I placed her on the counter and dished out the ice-cream and milktart. She couldn’t stop grinning, I felt good to make her happy.
She jumped off the counter and went back to watching tv like she hadn’t just met a dead girl. I got back to my room, Blu was still shocked; her mouth was still hanging and her eyes were ready to f**k-off out of her sockets. “Sh-She can see me?”
“f*****g weird right?” I was ready for a nap but Blu wasn’t having that either.
“But how?” I shrugged. “Kai this makes no sense! No one else can see me, why can Livvy see me?”
“Blu calm down, what’s the worst that could happen ?” That shut her up for a good ten seconds before she went on a rampage.
“Okay nothing… But- but how can she see me?” She paused then went right back into attack mode. “Maybe she was just confused.”
I rolled my eyes. “If she could spell ice-cream and milktart, correctly in front of us, I’m pretty sure she wasn’t confused.”
“Then how –“ Blu paused before turning back to me and slowly walking towards my bed. “Kai?” Her voice was oddly calm. She sat on the mattress.
“Dead girl.”
“Has your dad every hurt Livvy –“
“f**k no!” I cut her off. “If he even thinks about touching her, I’d knock the s**t outta him.” It was almost like I had not control. I just saw red and Rick and then I needed to punch something but then Blu’s hand was on mine. It’s coldness got me to cool down.
“Ha-has Livvy ever seen your dad hurt people. Your mom or you in particular?”
And for the life of me, I couldn’t remember… It was f*****g blank and I didn’t know if I protected Livvy enough for any of that s**t. “I don’t know.”
Blu’s cold fingers started tracing circles on the back of my hand. As cold as it was, it was comforting. “Does she have like an imaginary friend or something?”
“Zinky. A stuffed animal. What’s your f*****g point?” I was snapping but couldn’t stop. Blu understood.
“I think Livvy’s coping mechanism is seeing things that aren’t there. I’m sure she’ll grow out of it. I used to do that too.” Blu’s looked a little sad before she forced a smile; looking up at me.
And before I could ask what she meant, Livvy walked into my room. She was smiling again. “Kai, you promised you’d watch the Lion King with me. Blu do you wanna watch too?”
Blu smiled back at Livvy. “Sure Livvy, I’d love to.”
