Chapter 2: Mates

4777 Words
~Adam’s P.O. V~            Holy s**t, no this cannot be happening, not to a human. I look up at the night sky and see the moon. “Was this you're doing, Goddess of the Moon?! I cannot accept her!” Anika was the definition of beautiful, her emerald green eyes sparkled in the light, her platinum blond hair waving like waves in the ocean and her skin was like the deepest snow in that beauty of winter. When we locked eyes, my wolf went crazy. Jasper and I have looked everywhere in our pack for the perfect she-wolf. Not the perfect human, Quinn knows what I am, yet he never told a soul. I almost blew my cover thanks to him! I had to sit on the sidewalk at the nearest cross-section of the road. Far from their peering eyes.            What do you think you are doing?! Go back there and claim her! Japer howled in my mind.            No, she will be put in too much danger with the pack at war. I have not taken up the title of Alpha yet! How can I protect her when we are at war with the Mount Hood Pack and the Horse Tail Falls Pack? I asked him.            We can protect her. She is our mate, dumb f**k! I can feel it. When a wolf senses their mate, the bond between the two wolves were incredibly strong.            How? We at the Davis Lake Pack are so few now. I take a deep breath and let it out, Jasper, I am sorry. The risk is too high. You are right, though she is the perfect mate. I take one last look at the direction where her scent was. The intoxicating sweet smell of pine trees at Christmas time. The aroma filled the room the second she walked in. She was quite tall for a female human too. I should be back at Davis Lake preparing for yet another battle between the three packs here in Oregon, it is what an Alpha would do. Facing my dad would be the hardest job, I ran away last year when my older brother was killed by Horse Tail mutts. He was supposed to be Alpha, not me.            You cannot deny your fate, Adam Davis. Nor my will. The girl is precious to this world. A soft, motherly voice came from above. Unlike most deities, the Goddess of the Moon talks to her children.            My lady, please reconsider. She will be in constant danger, add to the fact that she does not know we exist. I pleaded.            Adam, she is already in harm's way. You must protect her.             What? What danger? From whom?! The mother gave no response. Please, at least tell me what I can do?            Go back to your pack and inform them that you have found her. Then, come and protect her, guide her. She is more special than you know. With those final words, The Goddess of the Moon left my mind. I sighed heavily in defeat. However, I was not one to question the mother of all werewolves. If she thinks Anika is special, then she is special. I pulled out my phone and called my mother, telling her I would be home in a couple of hours. After that, I pulled a bag from my pocket and went behind a tree to undress. I placed my clothes in the bag along with my phone and wallet. Shifting into Jasper hurt like a b***h still. He was a silver wolf with one blue eye and one black eye, he was at least a 15-foot-tall wolf, his height and strength signified his status of Alpha Wolf.            The run was long, yet still beautiful, going from the outskirts of Portland to Bend normally takes humans 4-5 hours by car, a wolf gets there in half the time. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by the guards at the gate. Our territory was insignificant compared to most packs of the North West, but we keep our people well-fed, well clothed, and employed. Walking behind yet another tree, I got dressed and entered my home. It was a small estate, with around 70 rooms. The top floors are meant for the Alpha and his family. The second floor below that was for the Beta's and the third floor below them; the Gammas. The rest of the floors were for the rest of the pack, we number to about 60 wolves. At one point we had the largest pack on the North West. 1,000 wolves were homed here at Davis. Then, The Mount Hood and Horse Tail Packs decided that our numbers were too great and joined themselves in an Alliance. Combined at this very moment, they number 4,000 werewolves.            We lost so many during the war, both rival packs keep coming back, taking more lives. After our pack lost so many, we concluded that they want to wipe The Davis Lake Pack from existence. I had to mind link mom and dad.  Mom, dad. Come to the office, there is something I want to discuss.  We will be right there, son.  I cut the link off and went to where my brother was shot with an arrow in the back and killed. I opened the door slightly and took a deep breath. Luckily, mom and dad were already there.  “Honey! You’re all right!” My mom began kissing my cheeks. “Where have you been? Your father and I were searching everywhere for you!” My mom was the sweetest lady I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Her battle scars were many, yet she kept her hopes and dreams up.  “Adam, welcome home, son. Now, please tell us what's on your mind.” My dad was a warrior since the day he was born, he killed Alpha Gregory in our last fight against them on our home turf.  I took a deep breath in and out as I sat where Adrian sat. I missed my older brother. I looked at my beloved parents and gave them a small smile. “I found my mate,” I stated. Mom was almost jumping out of her seat.   “Really? Well, where is she?” My father got up and looked out the door.  “She isn't here.” I put my hands on the desk and looked down, “Before I go into who she is, I need you and mom to swear to keep this under wraps until I bring her home.” My dad closed the door and locked it then sat back down. Both nodded their heads, “She is human.” Mom gasped and fainted.  “What?! Are you serious right now, son?” Dad raised his voice.  “Calm down,” I explained everything to them, including the conversation with The Goddess of the Moon herself. Mom looked so pale and father was seething in anger. Humans ruined our once-great lake by throwing trash into it and leaving campsites filthy. They were destroying everything that my great grandfather built.  “You have to reject her, Adam.” My dad got up and looked out the window.  “She’s a gross human. Why would The Goddess of the Moon pair you with one of them?!” Mom shouted at me.  “You know as well as I do that the will of the mother cannot be bent or broken.” I knew this fight would not end on a good note. Humans are hated by our kind, most of the time we kill them without cause. I, however, refused to kill a human.                                                                                                                ~Flashback to a year ago~         I was prowling the woods, waiting for an elk or bear to bring back to my pack. My wolf's silver fur made it difficult to blend in, especially at night. Adrian and his wolf Zale were pacing the other side of the lake. Zale completely blended in with the night of the forest. Only the shine of his eyes could be seen when the moonlight hit them. Upon my prowling, I accidentally stepped on a human that I had no idea was there. I looked down and he was snoring heavily with the smell of m*******a all over him. I sniffed his body to make sure he was not dead or dying, instead, something unexpected happened. He hugged my muzzle and kissed my head.  “I’ve always wanted a puppy.” He was still dreaming. His eyes completely closed as he snored. I shook him off and growled fiercely at this human who touched me. I saw him jolt awake when his body hit his truck.  “Whoa! What the f**k?!” The boy yelled. I snapped my jaws at him. “Yo, man… I didn’t mean to intrude on your hunting grounds.” He slowly got lower, “I’m sorry. I promise I did not kill anything. I'm a vegetarian.” He held up his arms in a pleading pose. I took pity on him and backed off. I decided to shift back in front of him. “s**t!” He backed up into his truck and hit his head. "Ow!" He looked up to his truck as he rubbed his head. I got closer to him and kneeled.  "You don't seem like any other human." I looked around where he was sleeping, and it surprised me. Not a single piece of trash or even a tent. He was just out in the open under the night sky with a full moon. His truck even smelled recently washed.  "I have no idea what you mean by that." He moved to where he was just sitting, "Sorry about the screaming. I did not think werewolves were real. Or that their wolf form would be an actual wolf. Not a hybrid of man."  "You know of us?"   "Well, duh. The most famous werewolves I have known about are Wolfman from Castlevania and Helsing. You aren't going to bite me, are you?" He groaned, "Because that would suck, man. I have a little sister I need to take care of." This intrigued me.                                                                          ~End of Flash Back~    ~Anika's P.O. V~      Of all the jerks that walked this earth, first, it was Peter, and now this douche bag named Adam. He could have stayed for five minutes of his time. I had his controller and was playing with the guys, Gran Turismo was a fun game, but I needed to vent and get my anger out. I was holding on to first place while Quinn and Brent fought for second and Cameron and Felix were fighting for third. I crossed the finish line first and grunted at Adam's car that I used.   "Holy s**t. Your sister is good." Cameron was sitting behind me.  "Yeah, I can't remember a time where she didn't beat our asses in a video game." Felix's remark had me smirking.  "Tch. Beginners luck." Brent was not so impressed.  "Watch out, man. She'll whoop your ass if you don't shut up." Quinn looked at me. "Are you all right? You seem pissed."   I took a deep breath in, "Of course, I'm pissed! I was dumped by Peter yesterday! Today I met a guy who doesn't even stick around for five minutes to talk and you pushed me towards him!" I flung my hands in the air. I looked at the guys behind me and they were all huddled on the couch holding each other. "Oh, and Felix? STOP Flirting with me! It won't happen, it's never going to happen, get that s**t out of your head!" I turned to Cameron next, "Ask Jilain out already! She's been waiting a whole month for you to answer her!" I put my hands on my hips, "And Brent! Do I have to go rounds with you as we did in High School?! On the Mats!? Enough of that jerk attitude of yours!" I grabbed my purse and walked out of Quinn's apartment.      ~Quinn's P.O. V~      The door slammed shut, leaving all of us in silence. I had never seen her that pissed off before, "All I did was ask a question..." I whispered.  "She's scary, bro." Felix was always the coward.  "Dude, Peter broke up with her?" Brent looked to the door.  "Yeah, I knew about and wanted to say something, but Peter was able to appeal to my nature." Without a second thought, Brent runs out of the door after her.  "Jilain Waterman? I totally forgot she existed." I slapped Cameron across the back of the head, "Ow! The hell?"  "Take Ana's advice and talk to the poor girl." I stood up and looked out my window. Brent was walking back, and Anika was nowhere in sight. I sighed and let her be.  "She moves fast, I have no idea where she went." He rubbed his neck.  "Probably went back to the office, again. She seems to think working out her mind is the best way to deal with stress." I grabbed my keys. "I am going to get some food. Just leave my sister be for now. It's been a rough day on her." I opened my door and went out.      ~Anika's P.O. V~      I was so angry at Peter and that jerk Adam, just a hello and goodbye?! Are you f*****g kidding me?! I even dolled up a little to make a good first impression. And what does he do? He runs! "Ugh! Learn to drive, dipshits!" I honked my horn. I finally got back to my office and threw my s**t on the floor. I parked my car out front where a meter was. I paid for the next 8 hours so that I would not be meter maided. I sat down at my desk and began working on The Anderson's File. A sudden chill filled the room and a hand brushed against my shoulder. I stood abruptly and tried to see if there was anyone there. But there was no one. I kept my guard up and took my most dangerous stance. That is when I felt a presence behind me, the second a hand peered through my vision, I grabbed it and threw the owner into the glass wall, shattering it.  "My, my, my. A feisty woman, aren't you?" He stood up again. I wasted no time as I ran to him and kicked him in the chest, knocking him into the secretary desk. "Hehe. You cannot hurt me, Anika, dear." This person knew my name?  "Who are you?!” I screamed at him.  "Matthew. At your service, my queen." He bowed to me, then disappeared. Before I knew what was happening, I felt pain in the back of my neck, then everything went dark.                I woke to a dark room; the only source of light was a few candles that were lit. I tried moving, but my hands were restrained by metal cuffs and chained to the wall. My legs were also tied up, the only thing that was remotely comfortable was the bed I was on. There were no windows as far as I could tell, it was freezing in here. I looked to my feet and noticed that my shoes were missing. I regret wearing this dress now, the cold made me shiver for a while. I tried scooting to one of the candles for warmth. Who was this Matthew guy? And why didn't I hurt him? Not a single scratch, how was that possible? I looked at my legs again, they were only bound with rope, and there were lit flames. How dumb is he? I placed the rope over one of them and waited for the sounds of snapping. Once they were free, I could give that bastard a swift kick in the balls. All men are susceptible to that, now I just must wait until the bastard returns. Was I frightened? Of course, however, my masters told me to use the fear and channel into another energy: Escape.             My hands may be bound, yet freeing my legs gave me a way to get my bobby pin out of my hair. I reached my foot to the side of my head to loosen one of them, this proved more difficult than I thought. The second I saw the pin drop, my chances of escape just increased. I know what I was about to do next was going to make me hurt and scream out of pain. He gave the chains leeway, big mistake. I dislocated both of my shoulders and popped them to the front of my body. The pain was excruciating as I popped the joints back in. I am more than sure he heard my cries and that gave me less time to get what I needed done. Picking up the bobby pin to use it as a lock pick was harder than I imagined. Now that my hands were in front of me, I pulled the other one out and used both pins to unlock my binds. The sound of the click made me happy. This room was stupid dark and huge, in times like this, my masters told me to do one thing: Blend. Hating what I was about to do, I grabbed the bed sheet that was thankfully as dark as this room and stripped off my white dress. I threw it on the bed and covered myself in this silk black bed sheet.      ~Quinn’s P.O. V~             It was 9 in the morning the next day, Anika was pissed off at the world and who could blame her? Peter broke up with her, Adam flew the coup as soon as he laid eyes on her and the guys were flirting with her all night. I tried to force a better relationship with her without considering how she must have been feeling. The sound of my phone going off took my thoughts away from that.  “Hey, Klein. What's up?”  “Dude! Get to the office now! Cops and investigators are all over our floor and Anika is missing!”  “WHAT?! What happened?!” I immediately got out of bed and rushed out the door.  “No idea, man. Gene and I came upon the scene where everything was broken. And I mean everything. The glass walls are shattered, the desks are completely broken apart. Her stuff is still here, including her phone. And one of her shoes. We think she was kidnapped.”  I hopped into my car with no shoes myself and only wearing my nightshirt and pants. “By whom?!” I was furious and scared for my sister.  Klein paused, “No one knows, she doesn’t exactly have a list of enemies.”  I yelled in frustration. “Klein keep them busy. I have another call to make.” I hung up the phone and dialed Adam. I knew his wolf might come in handy, I am just hoping he will come and help.     ~Adam’s P.O. V~  I was quietly resting on my bed when I got a call from Quinn. “Hey, man. Sorry, ab-” He cut me off.  “No time for that s**t! Someone took my sister! I need you and Jasper to help look for her!” I pulled my phone away from my ear.  “Slow down, bro. What do you mean your sister was taken?”   No! Not my mate! Jasper was growling in my head.  “I mean exactly that! Someone kidnapped her! And from the looks of the office, she put up one damn good fight.” His voice held fury, worry, and choking back tears. “She’s my little sister. I was supposed to protect her.”  “Calm down, Quinn. I will be there soon. Just think positively.” I hung up the call and stripped down. Placing my clothes, phone, wallet, and shoes into it. Going outside, I shifted once again and pushed Jasper to run at full speed.  Who do you think could have taken her? Asking a wolf in my head seemed weird to others, it was normal for our kind.  I do not know, but when I find them, I will kill them without hesitation! Jasper let out a ferocious howl, growling and sneering at the thoughts of Anika being harmed. She human but judging from what Quinn has told me about her, she would not go down without a fight.      ~Anika’s P.O. V~            I waited for a long time in the shadows, thankful that it was so dark no one could see me naked under this bed sheet. Finally, Matthew came in, turning his back to me.  “Well, this is a surprise. She got off her chains.” He picked up one of my bobby pins. “A master lock picker, fighter and knows how to get on one's nerves. Anika, my love. I know you are in here.” He began scanning the room. His eyes glazed past my hiding place. “Come now, my pet. I will not harm you.” He picked up my dress. “Very clever to hide with the darkness.” This guy was crazy, his eyes glowed red and a growl escaped his mouth. It was intimidating, to say the least like a tiger's or lion's growl searching for its prey. He snapped his fingers which brought forth a tentacle looking thing. “Do I have to force your hand?” I decided to quietly and slowly move to the now open door and make my grand escape from this lunatic. If I could just get to a phone, I could call Quinn or mom and dad, the police even. Kidnapping is still a crime punishable by jail time, last I checked. “I can hear your heart, my dear.” I quickened my pace and made it through the door.  “Master. We have secured the underground. She won't get past us.” Another man equally as handsome as Matthew came in to give the news. Saluting Matthew then leaving. I followed that man as quietly as I could. He rounded a corner, I cautiously looked, two more guards were placed there.  “General. Has the master not found his bride?” Bride?! Excuse me?! I am no one's bride!   “Yes and no. She is quite smart for a human. It seems chains were not enough.” He chuckled.  “Really? That is almost unheard of for the master.” I took in my blessing that it was still so god-awful dark that slipping past them was easy. They bantered more about me and Matthew. Ignoring the rest of their conversation, I moved on to the next corridor. This place was massive and so maze-like, I was beginning to fear that I would never make it out. I continued with my little shadow disguise until I saw a pathway with no guards. It seemed suspicious to me, the smell of this pathway made me want to vomit, I could not tell what it was, but it smelled as if something died in there. Deciding to pass up this path, I took a few more steps before I heard growling and howling. Along with the sounds of the floor being torn up. I watched in horror as these hounds and whatever it was coming towards me found my location. Making a last-minute decision, I ran down the pathway that smelled like death. Stopping only to empty my stomach.            I kept running down this pathway hoping that it might lead to the outside. What I came upon I could only describe as terrible and horrific. I could not hold my bile in much longer. The corpses of people were beyond sickening. Hot tears fell from my eyes as I continued to puck my guts out. Those poor people, how can anyone be so cruel?   “Finally ending this game of cat and mouse?” Matthew had found me.  “What the hell are you?!” I screamed at him before I vomited again. “You are a murderer! Stay away from me!” I back away, tripping on a corpse arm.  “I thought that would have been obvious, pet. I am a Vampyre, of course.” If I were not so horrified at the mountain of bodies, I would have laughed.  “A Vampyre? Those don’t exist!” I saw the frustration glint in his eyes before smiling a toothy smile at me.  “My poor, sweet, pet Anika. All those tales you have read, are not merely tales. I would love nothing more than to turn you, my dear. I am afraid that you are not of age yet. Still merely 18 years, I shall keep you here until I can.” He backed me into a wall. Trying to stand to fight him while feeling this sick was going to be a challenge. My legs were wobbly at best and my arms shook like crazy. I still managed to take a defensive stance against this monster, but I was so out of breath from the continuous vomiting. My vision blurred against my will, but I refused to let up and be taken down again.  He slowly approached me, this tall thin man leaned in a little, I tried to sucker punch him, but I missed. He caught me by the waist before picking me up princess style. "L-Let me go!" I struggled as hard as I could, my body was just too weak from the vomit and bile that came up. His arms were like iron bars around my body and freezing to the touch. Leading out of the pathway from the dead bodies, the hounds and tentacles were waiting for us. The hounds whined as their master approached and the tentacle retreated into the ground. Finally, out of that area, my sense of smell started to get better. I, however, was not getting stronger. Through the vomiting, my strength was waning, and my eyes became heavy.  "Do not worry, my Anika. Sleep will help your precious body recover." The last thing I see before passing out was his eyes glowing red.      ~Quinn's P.O. V~      I paced the floors of the office while police taped up the scene, I was freaking out and I had no idea where my sister could have been taken. I had to go to the restroom to avoid the press and the police before they saw a Butler in tears. I leaned and the sink and let it out. Punching the mirror in front of me before turning and leaning against the wall. "I failed my little sister. I'm a pathetic excuse for a brother!" Hitting the wall out of anger once more. I spent at least an hour on the floor in silent tears, not caring that my hand was bleeding from the mirror. I just wanted my sister back; I wanted her home and safe. The door opened and it was my father.  "Oh, Quinton. It is not your fault." He sat next to me and rubbed my back.  "But it is, I should have stopped her last night. I should have told her that Peter was breaking up with her."  "Son, your sister is a fighter, and I don't mean just physically. She is intelligent to the point where grounding her was no longer an option, taking her things never worked, she was just too smart for her own good. I have P. I's searching the cities, the skies, hell even in the country areas. We'll find her." He leaned against me.  Adam came through the door, "Quinn, I need to speak to you privately." My father got up and left the bathroom. Adam looked at the mirror and my hand. "I was going to ask how you were holding up, but seeing that mirror, I have my answer." He leaned his back against the sink.       ~Adam's P.O. V~  "I don't know who exactly, but my best guess is that a Vampyre took her. His or her smell reeks all over this place. Tracking it is going to be hard and will take time."  Time, we do not have! Adam, let me out and I will take that bloodsucker's head for hurting our mate!  Jasper calm your s**t! I have not exactly accepted her as such.  Then do it! Accept her and we can find her faster! Jasper roared fiercely in my mind. He had a point though, finding her through the mate bond would be faster. I can track her scent if I did. That sweet scent of pine in winter, reminded me so much of home. I ran last night because I was afraid to accept a human as my mate. Now, I must save her. Taking a deep breath in, I spoke these words aloud.  "I, Adam Davis, future Alpha of the Davis Lake Pack, here-by accept you, Anika Butler as my destined mate." I heard Quinn stand and come to my face.  "Excuse me? My sis-" He took a step back and held his head. "I knew it! Something in my guts was telling me that." I was caught off guard by his statement.  "You... Knew? " Flabbergasted I shook my head. The door opened once more and I caught that pine scent flooded my senses, it was stronger than it was before. "Quinn, it will still take time. Less than I thought, but still time." I place my hand on his shoulder. To think, that the man who slept out in the open that night would become my greatest friend. And brother-in-law. Adrian would have approved, unlike our family and pack. I rushed out the door and took my wolf form, letting Jasper take the wheel.
