The Moon and the People on Earth The Moon was young and beautiful. She shone every night in the sky giving light to all. Sometimes, she took a rest and for the rest of the month, she shone all night until the Sun came out. The Moon used to watch the earth from the deep sky at night. One day, she saw small tiny people coming out of their homes at night. She was fascinated to see those small people in beautiful dresses. She wondered how these dresses are so colourful. Since that day, she started to follow people with such dresses. She noticed that their dresses changed every day and they look very pretty in them. The Moon is Happy to See People on Earth Wearing Colourful Clothes Nights passed, and she grew quite fond of the colour dresses people wore every day. She was so happy to see them in such colourful attire and wanted one for herself. She thought, “I want to look pretty and beautiful as those people are wearing such dresses.” The Moon and Her Mother One night, she was about to go to sleep as the Sun was coming up, she asked her mother, “Mother! Have you seen the people on earth? They are so beautiful. Do you know they wear new colourful dresses every day and look so pretty?” Her mother replied, “Yes! I have seen them.” She said, “Mother! I want one. Can you give me full clothes like humans have?” Her mother listened to her patiently without replying. She continued, “Please mother! I just want a cloak made of rainbow fabric and colours.” Her mother did not say a word. She begged, “Please mother, I really want one. Please.” Her mother could not hold herself anymore and said, “Sorry dear! I cannot give you one.” She asked, “But, why?” Her mother replied, “It is because humans don’t change their shape rapidly but you do. You change your shape every month. Sometimes you are thin and sometimes you are full. No cloth can fit you.” The moon released her mother. How can clothes fit her if she is not consistent with her shape? She went to bed sad that day but eventually realised her beauty and shone every night since then. Moral of the Moon Fable The moral of this edition of the Fables about the Moon is that one should not change constantly as he will not be able to achieve something. It means a person has to be determined and dedicated to his aim to achieve something. Another moral of the story is one should not be sad to see someone else’s possession. On asking mother Earth replied, “It is true that the moon shines brightly in the night and its light is very useful for fruits, vegetables and green plants. But my son ! Don’t be proudy. Remember this light is not your own, you are getting it from the Sun. So don’t feel proud on that which is not yours “. The Earth continued , “The twinkling little stars are really not so small. They are the budddies of sun because sun itself is also a star. Don’t be ignorant, if a few stars come together their heat and light will be unbearable for us. The twinkling of stars also provide beauty to the night. Don’t fight with each other.” Each one felt satisfied and thanked Earth. __END__ Once A large herd of elephants lived in a jungle. Their king was a huge, majestic tusker. He looked after them with love and care. A severe drought hit the area. As there was no rain for a few years, all the rivers and tanks had dried up. Birds and animals died of thirst. The wild elephants suffered for want of water. Their king knew that if they did not get water soon, many of them would die of thirst. He had to find water as quickly as possible. He asked the elephants to go in different directions to look for water. Moon lake One of them found a large lake full of water in another jungle far away. The king was happy. He ordered all the elephants to make their way to the lake. It was a beautiful lake. Close to it was a colony of rabbits. The elephants had to pass through this colony. Thousands of rabbits were trampled to death and thousands more were injured. The rabbits were in a panic. Their king called a meeting. "A herd of wild elephants is passing through our colony," he said. "They have already killed or injured thousands of us. We have to take urgent steps to prevent more deaths. I want all of you to think of a way to save our race." The rabbits thought and thought. How could they stop the elephants? One little rabbit stood up. "Your Majesty," he said, "if you will send me as your messenger to the king of the elephants, I may be able to find a solution." "By all means, go as my messenger and see what you can do." The little rabbit hurried out. He saw a group of elephants returning from the lake. Right in the middle was the king. To get near him was impossible. "I will be crushed to death,' thought the rabbit. So he climbed up a huge rock. "O, king of the elephants," he shouted, "hear me, please." The king heard his voice and turned towards him. "Well, who are you?" he asked. "I am a messenger," replied the rabbit. "A messenger? From whom?" "I am a messenger from the mighty Moon." "What is your business? Is there a message for me from the Moon?" "Yes, yes, your Majesty. But you must not be angry with me. Please remember that a messenger is never punished for what he has to say. He is only doing his duty." "Very well. Say what you have been sent to say. I shall not harm you." "Sir," said the little rabbit, "the Moon has this to say" " You, the king of the elephants, have brought your herd to my holy lake and soiled its waters. You have killed thousands of rabbits on your way to the lake. You know that rabbits are under my special protection. Everyone knows that the king of the rabbits lives with me. I ask you not to kill any more rabbits. Otherwise something terrible will happen to you and your herd." The king of the elephants was shocked. He looked at the little rabbit. "You are right," he said. "We may have killed many rabbits on our way to the lake. I shall see that you do not suffer anymore. I shall request the Moon to forgive me for my sins. Please tell me what I should do." "Come with me alone," replied the rabbit. "Come, I shall take you to the Moon." The little rabbit took the huge elephant to the lake. There they saw the Moon reflected in the still waters. "There, your Majesty, meet the Moon," said the little rabbit. "Let me worship the divine Moon," said the elephant, and dipped his trunk into the water. At once the water was disturbed. The Moon seemed to move to and fro. The rabbit said, "Now the Moon is angrier than ever." "Why?' asked the king. "What have I done?" "You have touched the holy waters of the lake," replied the rabbit. The elephant bowed his head. "Please ask the Moon to forgive me. Never again will we touch the holy waters of this lake. Never again will we harm the rabbits whom the Moon loves so much." And the king and his herd went away. Soon there was rain and the elephants lived happily. It did not occur to them ever that a little rabbit had fooled them. The Indian culture and heritage is full of stories about nature and its importance in our lives. People still believe that the divine rays of the sun and moon play an important role in the day to day behavior of people. There are astrological calendars based on the lunar or solar path. The moon and sun are also viewed as divine bodies and worshipped by many. People have written many stories portraying the powers of the sun, moon and other forces of nature. The Panchatantra (five principles) is a classic example of animal fables written with a moral behind them. These stories address children and teach them morals and values they must inculcate. It is a collection of stories originally written in Sanskrit. The stories have been widely revised and translated into many languages. There are now over 200 versions in more than 50 languages. The Moon Lake is a short story about an elephant king and a rabbit. The story is set in the forest, during a severe drought that has left all the animals desperately in search of a lake or pond to quench their thirst. In this story, a rabbit tricks the elephant king into believing that he is a messenger of the moon who has come to inform him that the moon is unhappy with the actions of the elephants, which had trampled on a colony of rabbits on their way to a lake and disturbed the water. The elephant king seeks the moon’s forgiveness and promises to never set foot near the lake again. Here, the moon is personified as a God. Hence, the elephant is frightening when he learns that his herd will be punished for soiling the water of the lake. The moon holds power which even over the animal kingdom and influences their actions and behavior. Human behavior is also represented in the elephant’s belief in the moon and its power to punish, which allowed the rabbit to trick him. The power of the moon in this story is a representation of how, in reality, we give objects (idols and statues) power and worship them, even though they do not have any power over us. The forest wolf spent his nights howling at the moon. He was making fun of her, of how old she was, how slowly she moved, and how little light she had. In the same forest, when the howling had stopped, the little hedgehog would come out to console the moon. One day, both the wolf and the hedgehog were far from home and were caught unawares by a great storm. When the storm subsided, both animals were lost. As the moon came out, the wolf began his usual howling, while the hedgehog was feeling sad and frightened at being lost. Before long the hedgehog heard a voice calling him, but he couldn't see anyone around. It was the moon, who was so grateful for the hedgehog's constant help and advice, that she wanted to help him find his way home. So the moon gathered up all her light into one single ray, to help show the hedgehog how to get back safely. The hedgehog arrived home in the early hours, while the wolf remained lost, out in the darkness, and scared to death. Only then did he realise that all his rudeness to the moon had been pointless and cruel. The moon didn't shine for him until the wolf asked for forgiveness for his bad attitude, and promised not to bother anyone again like that. A long time ago, the Sun and the Moon were a married couple who lived on the Earth and were great friends of the Sea. One day, they invited the Sea to visit them but the Sea hesitated, thinking that there might not be enough room in their house. But they reassured him. So the Sea went along with the fish and all the members of his family. Immediately the water began to rise and the Sun and the Moon, to avoid being drowned, had to climb up onto the roof and then eventually into the sky, where they are ever since. Moon is very beautiful with his round, bright face which shines with soft and gentle light on all the world of man. But once there was a time when he was not so beautiful as he is now. Six thousand years ago the face of the Moon became changed in a single night. Before that time his face had been so dark and gloomy that no one liked to look at him, and for this reason he was always very sad. One day he complained to the flowers and to the stars—for they were the only things that would ever look in his face. He said, "I do not like to be the Moon. I wish I were a star or a flower. If I were a star, even the smallest one, some great general would care for me; but alas! I am only the Moon and no one likes me. If I could only be a flower and grow in a garden where the beautiful earth women come, they would place me in their hair and praise my fragrance and beauty. Or, if I could even grow in the wilderness where no one could see, the birds would surely come and sing sweet songs for me. But I am only the Moon and no one honors me." The stars answered and said, "We can not help you. We were born here and we can not leave our places. We never had any one to help us. We do our duty, we work all the day and twinkle in the dark night to make the skies more beautiful.—But that is all we can do," they added, as they smiled coldly at the sorrowful Moon. Then the flowers smiled sweetly and said, "We do not know how we can help you. We live always in one place—in a garden near the most beautiful maiden in all the world. As she is kind to every one in trouble we will tell her about you. We love her very much and she loves us. Her name is Tseh-N'io." Still the Moon was sad. So one evening he went to see the beautiful maiden Tseh-N'io. And when he saw her he loved her at once. He said, "Your face is very beautiful. I wish that you would come to me, and that my face would be as your face. Your motions are gentle and full of grace. Come with me and we will be as one—and perfect. I know that even the worst people in all the world would have only to look at you and they would love you. Tell me, how did you come to be so beautiful?" "I have always lived with those who were gentle and happy, and I believe that is the cause of beauty and goodness," answered Tseh-N'io.And so the Moon went every night to see the maiden. He knocked on her window, and she came. And when he saw how gentle and beautiful she was, his love grew stronger, and he wished more and more to be with her always. One day Tseh-N'io said to her mother, "I should like to go to the Moon and live always with him. Will you allow me to go?" Her mother thought so little of the question that she made no reply, and Tseh-N'io told her friends that she was going to be the Moon's bride. In a few days she was gone. Her mother searched everywhere but could not find her. And one of Tseh-N'io's friends said,—"She has gone with the Moon, for he asked her many times." A year and a year passed by and Tseh-N'io, the gentle and beautiful earth maiden, did not return. Then the people said, "She has gone forever. She is with the Moon." The face of the Moon is very beautiful now. It is happy and bright and gives a soft, gentle light to all the world. And there are those who say that the Moon is now like Tseh-N'io, who was once the most beautiful of all earth maidens. One day, the Sun and the Moon had a quarrel as to who was the stronger of the two. The two argued with each other for ages and finally the Sun declared that the Moon could not shine if the Sun’s light did not fall on it and illuminate it. To prove his might and utility, the Moon proudly replied, “You burn the earth with your heat and give light, but when I shine at night women come outdoors to spin in the moonlight.” On hearing this, the Sun became so angry that he picked up some mud and flung it at the Moon’s face. The Moon tried to get out of the way but couldn’t and the mud got stuck to him. It is believed that since then the Moon has dark spots on its face, where the Sun threw mud at it. One day Sun, Moon, and Wind went out to dine with their uncle and aunt, Thunder and Lightning. Their mother, a star, waited alone for her children’s return. Now both Sun and Wind were greedy and selfish. They enjoyed the great feast that had been prepared for them. But the gentle Moon did not forget her. Of every dainty dish that was brought round, she placed a small portion under one of her beautiful long fingernails, that Star might also have a share in the treat. On their return their mother, who had kept watch for them all night long with her little bright eye, said, Well, children, what have you brought home for me?“ Then Sun (who was eldest) said, “I have brought nothing home for you.“ And Wind said, “Neither have I!“ But Moon said, “Mother, fetch a plate, see what I. have brought you.“ And shaking her hands she showered down such a choice dinner as never was seen before. Then Star turned to Sun and said “Because you went out to amuse yourself with your friends, you shall be cursed. Henceforth, your rays shall ever be hot and scorching, and shall burn all that they touch. And men shall hate you, and cover their heads when you appear.“ And that is why the Sun is so hot to this day. Then she turned to Wind and said, “You also, you shall always blow in the hot dry weather, and shall parch and shrivel all living things. And men shall detest and avoid you from this very time.“ And that is why the Wind in the hot weather is still so disagreeable. But to Moon she said, “Daughter, because you remembered your mother, and kept for her a share of food, from henceforth, you shall be ever cool, and calm, and bright. No noxious glare shall accompany your pure rays, and men shall always call you ‘blessed.’“ And that is why the Moon’s light is so soft, and cool, and beautiful even to this day. On a full moon day, we can see a mark on the moon which looks like a hare. There is a interesting story about this mark on the moon. Once, Lord Buddha was born in the form of a hare in a forest in Varanasi. He used to play with his 3 friends, a monkey an otter and a jackal. One day the hair said to his friends,” We do nothing but play the whole day. Let us do some charity. If we give alms, we would be rewarded”. Hearing this, the monkey climbed up a mango tree and plucked down some sweet and juicy mangoes for all. The otter dived into a river and caught some fish and brought those for charity. The jackal did not know what to do. So he stole some curd for a hut. The hair being so small tried to find something in the grass. But he could find nothing and was disappointed. He came back to his friends and said, ” I could find nothing, so I have decided to give away my body in charity”. Lord Indra, the king of Gods, heard this. He came down to earth in the form of a monk to test the hare. He reached the hair and said,” I am hungry. Give me something to eat ”. The hare gladly replied,” I can offer you my body”. Saying this, the hare lit up the fire and jumped into it. To his surprise, the fire did not burn him. Lord Indra came to his original form and said,” your act of sacrifice is so great that the whole world will remember you for ages “. Saying this Lord Indra drew a hare in the moon. This mark is there today also and reminds us to help the needy and to give alms to the poor. MORAL : Do charity and sacrifice. Don't be selfish. Once a large herd of elephants lived in a jungle. Their king was a giant and impressive tusker. He looked after all the members of the herd with utmost love and care. Once, a severe drought hit the area. All the birds and the animals started dying out of thirst. The elephant king knew that he had to find water as quickly as possible. He asked the members of the herd to go in different directions to look for water. One of them found a large lake full of water in the woods far away. The king was very happy and ordered all the elephants to make their way to the lake. The elephants started clearing up the way to the lake for all the members of the herd. There was a colony of rabbits also on the way to the jungle. In their excitement of reaching the lake as soon as possible, the elephants trampled many rabbits under their feet. All the elephants were very happy to reach the lake. They had fun and frolicked in the water the entire day in the lake and once they were thoroughly satisfied, they left. The rabbits were in a state of panic as they knew that the elephants would return soon. Their king called a meeting. He said, “A herd of wild elephants has homed in on the lake near our colony. They have already killed or injured thousands of us. I am sure, they will come back soon. So, we must think of a way to stop them and prevent more deaths.” One little rabbit stood up and said, ” I do have a plan to drive away the elephants from this forest. I will go to meet the king of the elephants when he will come again this side.” The next day when the rabbit saw the herd of elephants coming towards their side again, he climbed up a huge rock and shouted at the top of his voice, “O king of the elephants, hear me, please.” The king heard his voice and turned towards him. “Well, who are you?” he asked. “I am a messenger of the moon,” replied the rabbit. He further added in a firm tone, “I have come here to tell you that the moon is mighty upset with you as you have soiled his lake. He is thinking of punishing you strictly for your deed.” Upon hearing this, the elephant king got frightened. He said, “Please take me to God Moon. I will seek his forgiveness.”The clever rabbit said, “All right! Meet me alone tonight at the lake.” That night, he king elephant as told by the rabbit, reached the lake alone. The rabbit and the elephant both stood near the edge of the lake. It was a moonlit night and a mild breeze was blowing. The rabbit asked the elephant to look carefully into the water of the lake. When the king elephant looked into the water, he saw the reflection of the moon. Just then a mild breeze blew and created ripples in the water of the lake. With the ripples, the reflection of the moon in the water also became wavy and disturbed.Pointing to the disturbed reflection of the moon, the little rabbit said,”Look for yourself, how annoyed God Moon is with you! He may even curse you to death, if you do not ask for his forgiveness.” The king elephant became extremely frightened and promised that he or any member of his herd would never visit the Moon’s lake again. The clever trick of the little rabbit worked and all the rabbits lived happily, thereafter. The moral of the story is that intelligence is superior to might. One night, high in the midnight black sky the moon was happily watching her children, the stars playing. One of the stars was sitting by itself and not glowing as brightly as all the other stars. “What’s the matter little one? Why are you not playing with all the other stars? And why are you so sad?” asked the moon. “Mother, what happens to us when you send us down to earth?” asked the star with a small whimper. The moon smiled to the star as some of the other stars heard the question and gathered around “Yes mother, what happens to us after you have sent us down to earth?” another star asked “Oh please tell us,” said another. The moon looked around at all her children: “When you are all old enough and your lights are starting to go out, I send you to earth so you can start your next life. When I have sent you down, you will be re-born into something you see down there,” she said, motioning to the earth below her “some of you will be trees and other plants, some of you the animals and some will even be the people that live and admire us from so far away. Then when your time on earth is done, you will be sent back to me.” All the stars smiled and started to chatter about the things they wanted to see or wanted to be, but the little star still seemed sad: “What if we don’t want to leave?” said the little star. “Why wouldn’t you want to leave little one?” asked the moon.“I’m next to leave and I don’t know if I’m ready to leave yet,” said the star, looking down on earth. “One day you will come back to me and the other stars and you will have many stories of all the things you did and saw when you were down there.” The little star liked that idea of coming back and having a story to tell and smiled “In that case,” it said “I can’t wait till I go down there.” it exclaimed. The moon smiled and sent the little star down, watching it glow bright as it approached the earth. The other stars smiled and watched the star, talking about what it was they thought the star would see and do while on earth. So, on went the life cycle of the stars. The moon would send her children down to earth when their lives as stars had ended m .
