A gunshot cracked through the air and Ronan threw himself in front of me.
Everything moved fast after that. Pain flashed across his face but he stayed on his feet. The men fought like wild animals to get us out. We piled into a waiting car and sped away from the safe house with tires screaming.
"Ronan, you are bleeding," I said, voice shaking. My hands pressed against his side in the back seat. Warm blood soaked through his shirt.
"Drive faster," Jax ordered from the front. "New location. The old cabin spot."
Kai sat beside me. "Hold on, big guy. We are almost there."
Ronan grunted but kept his eyes on me. "Worth it. You are safe."
We reached a small hidden cabin outside the city. The men carried Ronan inside to a tiny bedroom with one dim lamp. I grabbed the first aid kit and followed. The room felt close. Just me and him for a moment while the others checked the perimeter.
"Sit down," I told him. I pushed him gently onto the edge of the bed. "Let me see it."
Ronan pulled his shirt off. The bullet had grazed his side. It looked painful but not too deep. I cleaned it with shaky hands.
"Why did you do that?" I asked. "You took a bullet for me."
He watched me work. His voice came out low. "Because I cannot lose you. Not you."
I pressed gauze against the wound. "Talk to me, Ronan. You are always so quiet. Tell me why you care this much."
He stayed silent for a long minute. Then the words started. "My childhood was hell. Dad drank. Mom left. I learned early that people who matter get hurt unless you stand in front of them. When your parents died, I promised myself I would never let the same thing happen to you."
My fingers slowed on his skin. The moment felt intimate. Just the two of us in the soft light. "You have been carrying that alone?"
"Yeah," he said quietly. "I do not talk much. But with you it feels different. I need to protect you, Lila. Not because of Ethan. Because you matter to me."
I finished wrapping the bandage. My hand rested on his chest. "Thank you. For saving me tonight."
He covered my hand with his. The touch felt warm and strong. Vulnerability showed in his eyes. For the first time the silent Ronan let me see inside.
Outside the room the others moved around. Zane called everyone together in the main area. "I went through the feeds from Lila's old house before we left. They had hidden cameras. Someone has been watching her for months."
I walked out with Ronan close behind. "Cameras? In my house?"
Zane nodded and spread photos on the table. "Look. These were in a folder we grabbed. Pictures of you at college. Walking to class. Even sleeping."
My stomach turned. "Who would do that?"
Jax stood by the window. Guilt sat heavy on his face. "This is my fault. I should have seen the threats coming sooner. After your parents, I pushed the hardest for the underground work. Now it is coming back on you."
Kai tried to smile but it did not reach his eyes. "Hey, at least we are all together now. No more lonely nights watching from the shadows, right?" His joke hid real pain. I could see it now.
Dante punched the wall lightly. "I hate this waiting. My temper is ready to explode. If I find who put those cameras, I will make them regret it."
I looked at each man. They were not just my brother's friends anymore. Jax carried deep guilt. Kai covered his hurt with charm and jokes. Dante fought his quick anger every day. Ronan held his rough past close. Zane stayed calm but worked nonstop to fix things.
"You all have been hurting too," I said. "I thought I was the only one struggling."
Ethan nodded. "We all carry pieces. But we stay strong for you."
Kai sat next to me. "See? We are not so scary once you know us. Though some of us are still working on the temper." He glanced at Dante with a grin.
Dante shot back, "Says the guy who flirts to avoid real feelings."
"Enough," Jax said. "We focus. The photos mean the enemy is closer than we thought."
Ronan stayed near me. "You are not alone in this. Not anymore."
I felt the shift. These men had layers. Burdens. Real hearts under the danger. My feelings for them grew more complicated by the minute.
Zane passed me my phone. "It started ringing while we were moving. You should check it."
I opened the screen. A video message waited. I pressed play. The face that appeared made my blood run cold. A man I believed died years ago in the same accident as my parents stared back at me.
"Lila," he said in the video. His voice sounded urgent. "If you are seeing this, they found you. The real danger is closer than you think. Do not trust everyone around you. The secrets run deeper than the pact. Watch your back."
The video ended. The room went dead silent.
I looked up at the men. "He is alive. And he knows things."
Jax stepped closer. "Who was that?"
"Someone from our past," I whispered. "Someone who should be dead."
The new warning hung in the air. My world felt even more dangerous now. These men protected me with their bodies and their secrets. But the video made me wonder how deep the lies really went.
Ronan touched my shoulder again. "We face this together."
Kai tried another smile. "One problem at a time, yeah?"
Dante cracked his knuckles. "Let them come. I am ready."
The night stretched ahead. I was changing right along with them. The intimate moment with Ronan, the burdens I saw in each man, and this new warning all mixed together. I had a feeling sleep would not come easy.
