"You kept me in the dark this whole time?"
The words burst out of me the second we reached the safe house. My heart still raced from the fight and the run. The place looked like an old apartment hidden behind a plain door. Dim lights. Heavy curtains. The five men moved around me like they owned every inch of it.
Ethan burst through the door minutes later. His face was tight with worry. "Lila. Thank God you are okay."
I spun on him. "Okay? I got attacked with a knife and now I am locked up with you and your friends. Start talking. All of you."
The men gathered in the main room. Jax crossed his arms. Dante leaned against the wall. Zane checked the windows. Ronan stood quiet in the corner. Kai stepped closer to me with that easy smile of his.
"Easy, Lila," Kai said softly. "We did not want you mixed up in this mess. Your brother tried to keep you clean."
"Clean?" I shot back. "I deserve the truth. Why did those men jump me? What underground stuff are you all into?"
Ethan rubbed his face. "We have been running protection for what is left of our family fortune. After Mom and Dad died, there were threats. We built something underground to keep the money safe and push back against the people who wanted it."
"You have been criminals?" I asked, voice rising. "All this time you let me think you had normal jobs while you hid everything from me?"
Jax spoke up. "It was not that simple. The money draws dangerous people. We made choices to protect you."
"Protect me?" I laughed bitterly. "I feel anything but protected right now."
Kai touched my arm gently. His fingers lingered. The closeness felt charged, warm in a way that made my skin tingle. "Hey, look at me. We hated keeping secrets. But seeing you safe was worth it. You have always been special to us."
His charm almost worked. Almost. I pulled back. "Special? Then why the secrets? Why the attacks tonight?"
Ronan watched me from the corner. His eyes never left my face. He said nothing but his stare felt heavy.
I turned to Dante. "You. You look like you want to say something. Tell me why those men wanted me."
Dante stepped forward fast. His control snapped. He pinned me against the wall in one move. His body pressed close. Raw frustration mixed with something hotter in his eyes. "Because you are the key, Lila. They think hurting you hurts us. And damn it, they are right."
My breath caught. The heat between us thickened the air. His hand rested beside my head. I could feel his heartbeat.
"Dante," I whispered. "What are you doing?"
He leaned in closer. "What I have wanted to do for years. What we all want."
The door slammed open. Ethan walked in and froze. "What the hell is going on here?"
Dante stepped back quickly. I stayed against the wall, face burning.
Ethan looked between us. "We had rules. A pact. No one touches Lila. Not like that. Ever."
Kai tried to lighten things. "Come on, Ethan. Tensions are high. We just got her out alive."
"High tensions do not break the pact," Ethan said sharply. "Years ago we swore. One of us crosses the line with her and the group falls apart. The operation ends. We lose everything we built to protect her."
I stared at them. "A blood pact? You actually made a promise not to touch me? Like I am some forbidden object?"
Jax nodded. "It kept us focused. It kept you safe. But tonight showed how hard it is getting."
Ronan finally spoke from the shadows. "She needs to know everything. No more hiding."
Ethan sighed. "Fine. We run an underground network. Security, deals, protection rackets against worse people. The family money is tied up in it. Those men tonight work for a rival crew that wants it all. They see you as the easiest way to break us."
I shook my head. "So my whole life was a lie? You all treated me like family but really you were playing dangerous games behind my back?"
Kai moved closer again. His voice stayed soft. "Not a lie. We love you, Lila. That part was always real. The charm, the teasing when you were younger, it came from real care."
"Love?" I asked. "This feels like control."
Dante paced again. "It is not control. It is fear. Fear of losing you. When I pinned you just now, it was frustration. But it was more too. You felt that."
Ethan held up his hand. "Enough. We focus on keeping her alive. The pact stands."
I looked at each of them. "The pact might stand but I am not a little girl anymore. I decide what happens with my life."
The room felt smaller. The air still crackled from Dante's closeness and Kai's touches. Ronan kept watching. Jax looked torn. Zane stayed quiet but alert.
Suddenly alarms blared through the apartment. Red lights flashed on a panel by the door.
Zane moved fast. "Intruder. Back entrance. They found us."
Ethan grabbed a gun from a drawer. "Positions. Lila, stay behind us."
My stomach dropped. I was already so deep in their world. Deeper than I ever wanted.
Dante tossed me a look. "Stay close, princess. We are not losing you tonight."
Kai winked even as he checked his weapon. "We got this. Just like old times but with higher stakes."
Ronan positioned himself near me. His silent presence felt steady.
Jax gave orders. "Ethan left side. I take front. Dante right. Zane on tech. Ronan with Lila."
The door shook with a heavy hit. Voices shouted outside.
"Come out," a man yelled. "We know the girl is in there."
I pressed against the wall. "They followed us so fast."
"Someone tipped them," Zane said. "We have a leak."
Another bang hit the door. Wood cracked.
Ethan cursed. "Not now. We are not ready for another fight."
Dante grinned dangerously. "Too bad. I am in the mood to hit something."
Kai stayed near me. "Breathe, Lila. We do this together."
Ronan touched my shoulder lightly. "Stay behind me."
My pulse raced. Anger, fear, and strange new feelings mixed inside me. These men had secrets. They had a pact. But they also risked everything for me again and again.
The door burst open. Three men rushed in. Chaos exploded.
"Get her," one intruder shouted.
"Not happening," Jax roared. He took the first one down hard.
Dante crashed into another. "You picked the wrong night."
Fists and grunts filled the room. Ethan fought beside them. Zane disabled one with a quick move.
I watched from behind Ronan. My world had flipped completely. These dangerous men were my only protection now. And something told me the lines between us were already starting to blur no matter what pact they made.
The fight ended fast. The intruders lay unconscious. The men stood breathing hard.
Ethan wiped blood from his lip. "We cannot stay here. We move again in ten minutes."
I looked at all of them. "I am in this now. Whether you like it or not."
Kai smiled. "Welcome to the real world, Lila."
Dante met my eyes. The heat from earlier still lingered. "And it is only getting started."
My heart pounded as we prepared to run again. I was deep in their dangerous world. And part of me was not sure I wanted out.
