THE CHALLENGE
Over the next few days, Kevin seemed to be everywhere Jessica went. It wasn’t just in history class, where he continued to lounge in the back of the room, idly flipping his pencil between his fingers. It was in the hallways, where he leaned against lockers with an effortless kind of confidence, smirking at her whenever she walked by. It was in the cafeteria, where she could feel his gaze on her even when she wasn’t looking.
It wasn’t like he was making an effort to talk to her—not really. But he was watching her. Studying her. And she hated how much she noticed it.
Jessica tried to push it out of her mind. She reminded herself of everything she’d heard about him—the fights, the skipping class, the reckless attitude. He wasn’t someone she should be thinking about. And yet, she was.
It wasn’t until Thursday afternoon, as she was heading to her locker at the end of the day, that she was forced to acknowledge him.
Kevin was already there, leaning against the locker beside hers, arms crossed over his chest like he’d been waiting for her. His dark hair was tousled in that perfectly careless way, and his blue eyes held a flicker of amusement as she stopped in front of him.
“You’ve been avoiding me,” he said, voice smooth and lazy.
Jessica stiffened. “I haven’t been avoiding you.”
Kevin raised an eyebrow. “Really? Because every time I look at you, you look away. Every time I walk past you, you suddenly have somewhere else to be.”
Jessica huffed, opening her locker with a little more force than necessary. “Maybe you’re just imagining things.”
Kevin let out a soft chuckle. “Oh, I don’t think so.” He took a step closer, his presence suddenly making the air around them feel too charged. “I think you’re scared of me.”
Jessica’s hand froze on her books. She turned to face him, chin lifting slightly. “I’m not scared of you.”
Kevin smirked. “Good. Then prove it.”
Jessica narrowed her eyes. “And how exactly am I supposed to do that?”
Kevin tilted his head, considering her for a moment before his lips curved into a challenge. “Go out with me.”
Jessica blinked. “Excuse me?”
“Tomorrow night. Just you and me,” he said, as if it were the simplest thing in the world. “Unless, of course, you really are scared.”
Jessica scoffed. “That’s not how this works. You can’t just throw out some dare and expect me to agree.”
Kevin leaned in slightly, his voice dropping just enough to send a shiver down her spine. “It’s not a dare, Anderson. It’s an invitation.”
Jessica searched his face, trying to figure out if he was joking. But there was something in his eyes—something real beneath the cocky exterior.
She should have said no. She knew that. But something about the way he was looking at her made it impossible.
So instead, she crossed her arms and lifted an eyebrow. “Fine. One night. But this isn’t a date.”
Kevin’s smirk deepened. “Whatever you say.”
And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving Jessica standing there, heart pounding, wondering what the hell she had just gotten herself into.
