THE LOVE THAT CHANGED THEM
The more time Jessica spent with Kevin, the more she began to see the cracks in his armor. His confidence, the smirks, the defiance—it was all a mask, carefully constructed to keep people at a distance. But when he let it slip, even for a moment, Jessica saw the truth. Kevin had never known real love, not the kind that stayed.
One evening, they found themselves on the rooftop of an old bookstore, the city stretching out before them in a sea of flickering lights. Kevin had taken her there, saying it was one of his favorite places to think. They sat side by side, their legs dangling over the edge, the night air cool against their skin.
Jessica turned to him, watching as he exhaled a slow breath, his jaw clenched. “Kevin,” she said softly, “why do you always act like you don’t care?”
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stared out at the horizon, as if searching for the right words. “Because it’s easier that way,” he admitted. “If you don’t care, you don’t get hurt.”
Jessica’s heart ached for him. She had suspected this for a while, but hearing him say it out loud made it real. “But you do care,” she whispered. “I see it. You care more than you let on.”
Kevin turned to look at her, and for once, there was no teasing, no smirk—just raw honesty. “I don’t know how to do this, Jess.” His voice was barely above a whisper. “I don’t know how to let someone in without ruining it.”
Jessica reached out, her fingers brushing against his. “You don’t have to figure it out alone.”
For a long moment, Kevin didn’t move. Then, slowly, he intertwined his fingers with hers. It was such a simple gesture, but for Kevin, it was everything. He wasn’t used to letting people see him like this—unguarded, vulnerable.
Jessica gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “I don’t need you to be perfect, Kevin. I just need you to be real with me.”
He exhaled a shaky breath. “You’re not scared of me?”
Jessica shook her head. “No. Because I see you. The real you. And I’m not going anywhere.”
Kevin swallowed hard, as if trying to process the weight of her words. For years, he had believed that love was a weakness, something that would only lead to pain. But sitting there, with Jessica beside him, her hand in his, he realized something he had never dared to before.
Maybe love wasn’t a weakness. Maybe it was the only thing that had ever made him feel strong.
And for the first time in his life, Kevin Carmichael allowed himself to believe that he was worth loving.
