CHAPTER 25 Adam couldn't feel her pulse again. He wasn't sure if she was still breathing. Why is everything happening so fast? He thought to himself. “Belle? Belle?” “Wake the f**k up Belle!!!” He screamed. His hands were shaking, the stirring wasn't going as he wanted. He felt his heart pounding and a million thoughts flashed through his mind at once. Luckily enough, they had already gotten to the hospital. He couldn't even bother to pack well, he quickly came down, moved to the back seat and carried Belle like a bride. Except, she wasn't looking like one. He could no longer hear any sound from her. He ran as fast as he could with Belle in his hands while shouting at the top of his voice for nurses and doctors. In no time a stretcher was brought out and Belle was moved to an emergency ward. Adam tried going in but was stopped. “You can't go in sir, please wait here.” A nurse told him while rushing to join her colleagues in doing whatever they were doing on Belle. Adam felt like he needed urgent care too, he could feel his heart coming out from his chest. He didn't know what to do but one thing was sure – he couldn't afford to lose Belle. Adam went down on his knees, and did something he hadn't done in forever. He wasn't really a believer of the Christian faith but he sure hoped there was a being up there who would hear his plea and answer. “Please, please, bring her back to me alive.” He sobbed. “Please please please please…” and that's the only thing he could mutter for the next two hours. ____ Adam quickly jerked up his feet when the doctor in charge came to meet him. “How is she? How is my wife?” “Good evening Mr Hamilton.” “f**k your greeting, how is my wife?” He asked like he would kill the doctor if he doesn't give him a good response this time around. “She's fine, can I see you in my office please?” The doctor asked. Adam froze. That only meant one thing, something was wrong. And whatever it was, Adam was too scared to find out. At least she's alive. “Can I at least see her first?” He hesitated. “You can't, she's in the ICU. Let's talk first.” Adam had no choice but to follow him to his office to hear whatever bad news he had to say. The office was sleek and modern, reflecting the hospital's high-end reputation. The room was spacious, with polished wood panels and cream-colored walls. A large, executive-style desk sat at the far end, with comfortable-looking chairs in front of it. The walls were adorned with framed certificates and awards, hinting at the doctor's expertise. As a specialist for VIP patients, the office exuded luxury and professionalism. There was a nameplate on the desk that read ‘Dr. Kingsley Brown’. He offered for Adam to sit but Adam declined. “I'd rather stand.” “Are you sure? We have a lot to talk about.” Adam reluctantly took the offer and sat down. “She's stable,” he began. “But it was close; Belle had a ruptured ovarian cyst.” Adam blinked, completely thrown. “A what?” “Ruptured ovarian cyst.” Dr. Kingsley explained. “It caused significant internal bleeding and she lost consciousness due to blood loss and shock.” Adam’s brows pulled together. “Is it… life-threatening?” “It can be, if not treated quickly. Luckily, we were able to operate quickly, remove the cyst, and stop the bleeding. She’s in the ICU now but we are monitoring her closely.” Adam exhaled, the weight on his chest easing only slightly. “She’ll need a few days to recover,” the doctor continued. “Most patients are discharged within a week. She’ll feel sore, tired, and emotionally drained but she’s going to be okay.” Adam nodded slowly, emotion tightening his throat. “Thank you. I… I thought I was going to lose her.” “She’s strong,” the doctor said simply. “And lucky you got her here in time.” ICU ROOM – NIGHT The room was dim, quiet, and cold in that clinical way hospitals always were. Machines beeped softly in rhythm with Belle’s heart, an IV line snaked from her arm. Her skin looked pale against the white of the sheets, her body too still for Adam’s comfort. Adam stood at the doorway for a long moment, as if crossing into that room would make everything more real. When he finally stepped in, his chest ached – not from fear now, but from seeing her like this. Hooked to machines, eyes closed, like the fire had left her. He sank into the chair beside her bed, running a hand through his hair. “You scared the hell out of me,” he whispered, voice hoarse. “I thought I lost you.” His gaze swept over her face, every soft detail now carved into him like a scar. He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair off her forehead. “You’re not allowed to do that again, Belle. You don’t get to leave without warning, not like that.” She didn’t stir. Only the monitor responded with a steady, calm beep. Adam leaned forward, his elbows on his knees, hands clasped together. He continued, not minding that Belle couldn't hear a thing he's saying. “I don’t care how strong you pretend to be, you don’t always have to carry everything alone. Not when I’m here.” He paused, voice quieter now. “Let me be here.” Says someone that is trying to bring down her company. A soft knock on the glass broke the moment. A nurse peeked in, gave a small smile, then disappeared again. Adam stood slowly, then bent forward and pressed his lips gently to Belle’s forehead. “Come back to me,” he murmured. “Please.”
