THE STRANGER IN THE SNOW

740 Words
The wind howled outside, rattling the windows, as if it were a living thing warning her to leave. Lena Hart stayed frozen by the back door, knife still clutched in her hand. Her heart hadn’t slowed since the growl in the woods, and every instinct screamed danger. A soft knock broke through the storm. Not harsh, not demanding—just deliberate. She hesitated. Her mind raced. Who could possibly be out here? The snowstorm had made the roads impassable. There should have been no one. Another knock. This one louder. Louder still than before, but with a strange rhythm, almost… careful. “Who’s there?” she called, voice trembling. No answer. Something in the back of her mind told her not to open the door. Yet the feeling of being watched, of the house itself pressing its secrets against her, made hesitation dangerous. She edged to the peephole. A man stood there. Tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair falling slightly into storm-damp eyes. His coat was dusted with snow, his expression unreadable. Lena’s breath caught. There was something about him—something familiar yet impossible. A predator’s confidence hidden in calm, careful movements. “You shouldn’t be out here,” he said quietly. His voice was low, smooth, yet carried a warning that made her spine shiver. “I… I live here,” Lena stammered, though the words felt inadequate. The man’s eyes narrowed. “Not anymore,” he said. “And yet… you came back.” Lena’s pulse quickened. How did he know? She opened the door cautiously, knife still raised in front of her, though she barely expected it to keep him away. “I don’t know who you are,” she said, voice stronger than she felt. “You need to leave.” He tilted his head, studying her as if weighing a secret. “I’m not here to hurt you,” he said. “But you should know… you’re not safe here. Not tonight. Not with them watching.” Her grip on the knife tightened. “Who’s watching?” His gaze drifted toward the woods, dark and endless. “The town. The people you remember. They aren’t just people anymore.” Lena laughed nervously, though it sounded hollow in the quiet house. “You sound insane. This is my hometown.” “Exactly,” he said, stepping closer. “And that’s why you’re in danger.” Something about the way he spoke made her heart constrict. He was calm, but the storm in his eyes hinted at a power she didn’t understand. A predator, yes—but also… protector? “You’re… a stranger,” she said cautiously. “Why would I trust you?” He hesitated. Then he smiled faintly, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Because you don’t have a choice.” The words hit her harder than any physical blow. He wasn’t joking. He meant it. Lena’s mind raced. The growl. The footprints. The text. And now him—this man, standing in the snow, knowing everything she had hoped to forget. “Come in,” she whispered finally. Not because she trusted him—but because she had nowhere else to go. He stepped inside, brushing snow from his coat, and the house suddenly felt smaller, constricting. Lena noticed how quietly he moved, how careful his gaze was, scanning the dark corners as if expecting threats to emerge. “I’m Eli,” he said, finally looking at her. There was something about the name—ordinary, yet it carried weight. Something unspoken in the way he said it, a history between them that Lena couldn’t yet place. “Lena,” she replied, almost automatically. He studied her for a long moment, and then, softer this time: “You shouldn’t have come back alone.” Something in his tone struck her chest like ice. A warning? A confession? She couldn’t tell. But she knew one thing: the night was only beginning, and every second she stayed in Marrow Creek would pull her deeper into secrets she might not survive uncovering. Snow continued to fall outside, heavy now, and with it came the sense that the town was holding its breath—watching her, waiting for her next move. And Lena realized, with an impossible clarity, that Eli was not just a stranger. He was the beginning of the truth. A truth that would change everything she thought she knew about herself… and about love.
