Luna's heart pounded as she stared at the man standing before her.
Kael Nightshade.
Even before her father's death, his name had been spoken with caution throughout the werewolf territories. Some called him a ruthless warrior. Others claimed he was the strongest Alpha alive. Many feared him.
Now he stood only a few feet away.
And he knew something was different about her.
Luna quickly masked her emotions.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she said.
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"Really?"
His golden eyes swept over her.
The silver glow that had surrounded her moments ago had faded, but traces of power still lingered in the air.
The warriors behind him exchanged uneasy glances.
One of them stepped forward.
"Alpha, we should leave. She could be dangerous."
Kael held up a hand.
The warrior immediately fell silent.
Luna noticed the respect and fear the others had for him.
Kael returned his attention to her.
"You're Luna Blackwood."
It wasn't a question.
Luna stiffened.
"How do you know that?"
"The entire werewolf world will know by sunrise."
A shadow crossed his face.
"The Moonfang Pack has fallen."
The words struck like a blade.
Even though she had witnessed it herself, hearing someone else say it made the loss feel painfully real.
Kael studied her carefully.
"I heard Alpha Rowan was killed."
Luna clenched her fists.
"He was murdered."
The Alpha's eyes narrowed.
"So the rumors are true."
For a moment, silence settled between them.
The cold wind rustled the trees overhead.
Finally, Kael spoke.
"Beta Victor has declared himself the new Alpha."
Rage surged through Luna.
"I'll kill him."
Several Shadowclaw warriors laughed.
One stepped forward.
"You? Kill Victor?"
The warrior looked amused.
"You're the wolf-less princess everyone talks about."
Luna's face burned with humiliation.
Before she could respond, Kael's gaze snapped toward the warrior.
The amusement instantly vanished from the man's face.
"Enough."
The single word carried undeniable authority.
The warrior lowered his head.
"My apologies, Alpha."
Luna was surprised.
Kael barely knew her.
Yet he had stopped his own warrior from mocking her.
The Alpha turned back to her.
"What happened tonight?"
Luna hesitated.
Trusting strangers was dangerous.
Her father's closest friend had proven that.
Still, she needed information.
Slowly, she explained the attack.
Victor's betrayal.
Her father's murder.
The hunt that followed.
The more she spoke, the darker Kael's expression became.
When she finished, the clearing fell silent.
"Interesting," Kael murmured.
"What?"
"Victor isn't smart enough to plan something this large."
Luna remembered the shadowy figure from Selene's vision.
A chill crawled down her spine.
"You think someone is helping him?"
"I know someone is."
Kael crossed his arms.
"The question is who."
Before Luna could answer, a sharp howl echoed through the forest.
Every Shadowclaw warrior became alert.
Another howl followed.
Closer this time.
Kael's expression hardened.
"We have company."
Luna's stomach dropped.
The scent hit her seconds later.
Moonfang wolves.
Victor's hunters.
"They found me."
Kael glanced toward the darkness.
"They found us."
The forest exploded with movement.
A dozen wolves burst from the trees.
Their eyes glowed with bloodlust.
The leader shifted into human form.
Luna immediately recognized him.
Derek.
One of Victor's most loyal warriors.
Relief appeared on his face when he saw her.
Then he noticed Kael.
His confidence vanished.
"Alpha Nightshade," Derek said cautiously.
Kael remained silent.
Derek swallowed.
"We have no quarrel with Shadowclaw."
"Then why are you in my territory?"
The question carried a dangerous edge.
Derek hesitated.
"We're hunting a fugitive."
Luna stepped backward.
Derek pointed directly at her.
"Victor wants her returned alive."
Kael looked at Luna.
Then at Derek.
Then back at Luna.
The silence stretched painfully.
Luna knew what he was thinking.
Handing her over would avoid conflict.
It would be the easiest choice.
The safest choice.
Her chest tightened.
Maybe trust really was impossible.
Kael finally spoke.
"No."
Derek blinked.
"No?"
"No."
The Alpha's voice was calm.
Deadly calm.
"She's under my protection."
Shock rippled through the hunters.
Luna stared at him.
He barely knew her.
Yet he had chosen a side.
Derek's expression darkened.
"Victor won't like that."
Kael smiled.
The sight sent chills down Luna's spine.
"I wasn't asking for his approval."
The tension became suffocating.
Every wolf in the clearing prepared for battle.
Derek slowly stepped back.
"This isn't over."
"It is if you leave now."
For a moment, Luna thought a fight was inevitable.
Then Derek growled and shifted.
The other hunters followed.
Within seconds they disappeared into the forest.
Silence returned.
Luna released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
Kael watched the trees for several moments before relaxing.
"You should thank me."
Luna folded her arms.
"Thank you."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"You're welcome."
One of his warriors approached.
"What now, Alpha?"
Kael looked at Luna.
"Now we return home."
Luna frowned.
"What?"
"You're coming with us."
Her eyes widened.
"No."
Kael sighed.
"No?"
"I don't need protection."
"You were nearly captured ten minutes ago."
"I escaped."
"Barely."
Luna glared at him.
Kael looked completely unimpressed.
The Alpha stepped closer.
"You have enemies hunting you."
"So?"
"You have nowhere to go."
"I'll find somewhere."
"Where?"
Luna opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because she didn't know.
Everything had happened too fast.
She had no allies.
No resources.
No plan.
Kael nodded knowingly.
"Exactly."
The realization frustrated her.
He was right.
And she hated that he was right.
Kael extended a hand.
"Come to Shadowclaw."
Luna stared at it.
"Why?"
The Alpha's expression became serious.
"Because something is happening."
The playful confidence vanished from his voice.
"I can feel it."
The warriors exchanged nervous glances.
Kael continued.
"Victor's rebellion is only the beginning."
Luna remembered Selene's warning.
Darkness is rising.
The words echoed in her mind.
"What if I refuse?"
Kael shrugged.
"Then you'll probably be dead before sunrise."
A laugh escaped her despite herself.
The Alpha smirked.
"Glad you're seeing reason."
Luna rolled her eyes.
For the first time since her father's death, a tiny spark of hope appeared inside her.
Perhaps she wasn't completely alone.
Perhaps her story wasn't over.
Slowly, she accepted his hand.
A strange sensation shot through both of them the moment their skin touched.
Silver light flashed briefly around Luna's fingers.
Kael's golden eyes widened.
The bond lasted only a second before disappearing.
Neither moved.
Neither spoke.
The warriors looked equally confused.
"What was that?" Luna whispered.
Kael quickly released her hand.
His expression became unreadable.
"I don't know."
But Luna wasn't convinced.
Because for the briefest moment, she had seen something in his eyes.
Shock.
Recognition.
And fear.
The Alpha turned away.
"We're leaving."
The warriors obeyed immediately.
Luna followed them into the darkness.
As they disappeared deeper into Shadowclaw territory, neither she nor Kael noticed the figure watching from the treetops above.
A pair of crimson eyes gleamed in the night.
The stranger smiled.
"The prophecy has begun."
Then he vanished into the shadows.
