Chapter 4: Secrets of Shadowclaw

1137 Words
The journey to Shadowclaw territory lasted until dawn. Luna walked beside Kael's warriors in silence, her senses unusually sharp. Since her encounter with the Moon Goddess, everything felt different. She could hear birds stirring miles away and smell rain long before it touched the earth. The power inside her was growing. And it terrified her. As the first rays of sunlight broke through the trees, a massive stone wall emerged from the forest. Luna stopped. Shadowclaw Pack territory stood before her. Unlike Moonfang, which was built around a traditional packhouse, Shadowclaw resembled a fortress. Towering walls surrounded dozens of stone buildings, watchtowers guarded every entrance, and warriors patrolled constantly. It looked less like a home and more like a kingdom prepared for war. Kael noticed her expression. "Impressed?" "A little." His lips twitched into a faint smile. "Good." The gates opened immediately at the sight of their Alpha. The moment Kael entered, every wolf they passed bowed their heads. Some greeted him respectfully. Others looked at him with open admiration. Luna noticed something unusual. No one feared him. They respected him. The realization surprised her. Rumors had painted Kael Nightshade as a ruthless tyrant. The reality seemed far more complicated. As they crossed the courtyard, a young woman with fiery red hair rushed toward them. "Kael!" Without hesitation, she threw her arms around him. Luna felt an unexpected twist in her chest. The woman quickly stepped back. Bright green eyes landed on Luna. "And who is this?" Kael sighed. "This is Luna Blackwood." The woman's eyes widened. "The Luna Blackwood?" Luna frowned. "There are others?" The woman laughed. "I like her already." She extended a hand. "My name is Aria." Luna shook it cautiously. Aria seemed friendly enough, but Luna had learned a painful lesson about trust. Friendly faces could hide dangerous intentions. "Aria is my Beta," Kael explained. Luna blinked. "A female Beta?" Aria placed a hand on her hip. "Problem?" "No." "Good answer." Kael shook his head. "Don't encourage her." Aria grinned. "Too late." For the first time in days, Luna almost smiled. Almost. The memory of her father's death quickly erased the feeling. Kael's expression softened slightly. "You need rest." "I don't need" "You do." Luna sighed. Arguing with him was becoming exhausting. A servant escorted her to a guest chamber inside the fortress. The room was simple but comfortable. A large bed sat near a window overlooking the training grounds. As soon as the door closed, exhaustion crashed into her. She barely managed to sit before sleep claimed her. A scream tore through the darkness. Luna ran through burning hallways. Blood covered the walls. Smoke filled the air. "Father!" No answer. The packhouse collapsed around her. Flames consumed everything. Then she saw him. Victor. Standing over Alpha Rowan's body. Smiling. "You were never strong enough," he said. Luna lunged toward him. The floor shattered beneath her feet. She fell endlessly into darkness. And below her waited a pair of glowing crimson eyes. Watching. Waiting. Hunting. Luna woke with a gasp. Sweat covered her skin. Her heart hammered against her ribs. The nightmare felt disturbingly real. Too real. A knock sounded at the door. Before she could answer, Aria entered carrying a tray of food. "You look terrible." Luna glared. "Thanks." "You're welcome." Aria set the tray down. For a moment neither spoke. Then Aria's expression grew serious. "You miss him." Luna looked away. "My father?" Aria nodded. Luna swallowed hard. "I watched him die." The words felt like broken glass. Aria sat beside her. "My father died when I was sixteen." Luna looked up. "I know what it feels like to lose someone important." The sympathy in her voice seemed genuine. For the first time, Luna lowered her guard slightly. "How did he die?" Aria's eyes darkened. "War." Silence settled between them. Both women understood loss. Neither needed further explanation. Eventually Aria stood. "Kael wants to see you." Luna immediately became suspicious. "Why?" "He didn't say." "That's reassuring." Aria laughed. "Good luck." Kael waited inside a large stone chamber filled with maps. Several warriors stood nearby discussing patrol routes. The room fell silent when Luna entered. Kael dismissed everyone with a wave. Once they were alone, he handed her a rolled parchment. Luna opened it. Her blood ran cold. It was a wanted notice. Her face appeared at the center. Beneath it were the words: TRAITOR TO MOONFANG REWARD FOR CAPTURE ALIVE OR DEAD Victor's seal marked the bottom. Rage flooded her veins. "He's calling me a traitor?" Kael nodded. "He's spreading the story across every territory." Luna crushed the parchment. "He murdered my father." "And now he's controlling the narrative." The truth stung because it was accurate. Many packs would believe Victor. Many already had. Kael studied her carefully. "There's more." Luna frowned. "What now?" The Alpha pointed toward a map. Several pack territories had been marked in red. "Three smaller packs pledged loyalty to Victor this morning." Shock crossed Luna's face. "Already?" Kael nodded. "His influence is spreading quickly." Something about it felt wrong. Too fast. Too organized. Exactly like Selene had warned. Someone was helping him. Someone powerful. A knock interrupted them. One of Kael's scouts rushed inside. His face was pale. "Alpha." Kael immediately stood. "What happened?" The scout swallowed. "We found a body near the eastern border." The room became silent. "A Shadowclaw warrior?" The scout nodded. A cold feeling settled in Luna's stomach. Kael's expression hardened instantly. "Show me." The body lay in a forest clearing. Dozens of warriors surrounded the area. Luna followed Kael through the crowd. The moment she saw the corpse, she froze. The warrior's chest had been torn open. A strange symbol had been carved into the ground beside him. A circle surrounded by three claw marks. Kael knelt beside the body. His jaw tightened. "What does it mean?" Luna asked. The Alpha didn't answer immediately. Aria appeared beside them. For once, even she looked frightened. "That's impossible." Luna looked between them. "What is it?" Kael slowly rose. His golden eyes had turned icy. "A warning." "From who?" The Alpha stared at the symbol. "The Crimson Fang." Luna frowned. "I've never heard of them." Aria exchanged a worried glance with Kael. "Most people haven't." A chill ran down Luna's spine. "Tell me." Kael's voice was grim. "They're supposed to be extinct." The forest suddenly felt colder. The wind whispered through the trees. And for the first time since arriving at Shadowclaw, Luna sensed something lurking beyond the edge of the clearing. Watching them. Hidden within the shadows. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Whatever the Crimson Fang was, Luna had a feeling it was connected to the darkness Selene had warned her about. And deep in her heart, she knew one thing with absolute certainty. The real war had only just begun.
