Chapter 8

453 Words

Married life turned out to be peaceful and unexpectedly happy. Arthur treated me so well that, at times, it almost felt unreal. He remembered every one of my preferences. Sometimes he would come home late at night with snacks he knew I liked. Whenever I could not sleep, he would hold me against his chest and gently pat my back until I drifted off. Every morning before leaving for work, he would lean down and press a kiss to my forehead. One day, I accidentally caught sight of his phone password. It was the same password he had used for the black card he gave me. Curious, I looked up at him. "Does 170813 mean something?" Arthur met my gaze, his eyes soft with a warmth that made my chest tighten. "That was the day I first met you." After that, I barely remembered anything else he said.
