At the click of the door across the hall opening, Hugh left without a word.
Either Branwen was close enough for John to touch, or he was going to have to keep his promise to Faolin and Cian. That nearly staggered him, the idea of seeing and holding Branwen.
He couldn’t believe he’d ever thought this woman in front of him was his wife. He’d convinced himself, stepping back from the truth and hiding it most effectively.
All John could focus on was getting Branwen, himself, and their baby far away from here, from these people.
But he couldn’t do that, not yet. He didn’t know enough to keep them safe.
Hugh returned less than a minute later with Dr. Hammond.
“Where is she?”
John’s voice was still sharp and dangerous, but his heart pounded hard enough to distort his vision.
