CHAPTER EIGHT:THE BATTLE OF EMBERS

542 Words
The Forest of Fire trembled as the shadows gathered around them. Their forms were sharper now—creatures of ruin with jagged limbs and eyes like burning coals. The air thickened, vibrating with their hunger threatening to consume them. Ammie felt the fire in her veins surge, restless, alive. Kael stepped forward, his own flames blazing into a blade. “They’ve come for you,” he said, his voice grim clutching on his blade tightly. “They know the missing child has returned. They will not stop until you are extinguished.” Ammie’s chest tightened. “Then we fight.” The shadows lunged towards them. Kael met them head‑on, his blade slicing through smoke and ash engaging in a fierce battle with the shadows. Ammie raised her hands, the fire on her palm flaring wild. She tried to shape it into a shield, but the flames burst outward, consuming the clearing in a storm of light. The shadows shrieked, recoiling, yet more pressed forward eager to consume her. Kael shouted over the chaos. “Focus, Ammie! Remember what I taught you—command it, don’t resist it!” She inhaled, steadying her pulse. The fire bent, shrinking into her palms, then stretching outward into a sphere of molten light. She hurled it forward, striking a creature square in the chest. It dissolved into ash, its scream echoing into silence. But as the fire obeyed her, visions surged again more vividly as if they are screaming at her—fragments of her forgotten past. She saw herself as a child, standing in a hall of flame, crowned with embers. Voices whispered: She is the hinge. She is the bridge. She is the only hope. Her knees buckled, the weight of destiny pressing down heavily on her. “I was meant for this…” she whispered. Kael fought beside her, his blade flashing fiercely. “Yes! You were hidden, but never lost. You are the ember preserved. You are the flame reborn from the ashes. And now, you must rise to uphold your destiny.” The shadows closed in, circling. Ammie lifted her hands, the fire blazing brighter than before it's flame changing from yellow to blue. It wrapped around her like armor, flowing into her veins, her heartbeat syncing with its rhythm. She felt the power surge beyond Kael’s, beyond anything she had imagined. The creatures faltered, their hunger turning to fear. Ammie’s voice rang out, fierce and unyielding, her molten eyes glowing with determination: “I am Ammie. I am the missing child. I am the bridge between worlds. And I will not let either world fall!” The fire erupted, consuming the clearing in a storm of light. Shadows shrieked and scattered, fleeing into the depths of the forest. Silence fell once again on the desolate forest, broken only by the crackle of embers and the evidence of the battle which had occured. Kael lowered his blade, his eyes wide with awe and pride. “Your power… it’s greater than even I imagined. You are not just hope, Ammie. You are the destiny of our worlds.” Ammie stood tall, the fire blazing in her eyes. For the first time, she did not feel misplaced or invisible. She felt inevitable.
