Alex asked, "So, have you heard from Rachel lately?" Jamal's expression turned thoughtful. "Actually, yeah. We talked last week. She's doing well, just busy with work and stuff." Alex nodded. "That's great. I'm glad to hear she's doing well." Jamal smiled. "Yeah, me too. She's a great person." Alex raised an eyebrow. "You two are still close, huh?" Jamal nodded. "Yeah, we are. We don't get to see each other as often as we'd like, but we keep in touch." Alex smiled. "That's really cool. You two have been friends for a long time." Jamal nodded. "Yeah, we have. Rachel's one of my oldest friends." As they continued talking, Alex realized that he didn't know much about Jamal's past. He had always been a private person, but Alex was curious. "Hey, Jamal?" Alex said. "Yeah?" Jamal replied. "What's the story with you and Rachel? How did you two meet?" Alex asked. Jamal smiled, a faraway look in his eyes. "We met in college. We were in the same dorm, and we quickly became friends." Alex nodded, intrigued. "And then what happened?" Jamal leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Well, we just kind of... clicked. We had a lot in common, and we quickly became close friends." Alex raised an eyebrow. "And was there ever anything romantic between you two?" Jamal chuckled. "No, nothing like that. We were just friends." Alex nodded, smiling. "I'm glad you two are still close." Jamal nodded, smiling back. "Yeah, me too." As they sat there, Alex couldn't help but feel grateful for his friend. Jamal was always so positive and enthusiastic, and he had a way of making everyone around him feel seen and heard. The conversation flowed easily from one topic to the next, and before long, they had been talking for hours. As the night wore on, Alex realized that he was having one of the best nights he'd had in a long time. "Thanks for tonight, Jamal," Alex said, as they walked out of the restaurant. Jamal smiled. "No problem, man. I'm always happy to hang out with you." Alex nodded, smiling back. "I appreciate it." As they walked back to their cars, Alex felt a sense of contentment wash over him. He was grateful for his friend, and for the good times they shared together. And as he drove home, Alex couldn't help but feel excited for the concert on Friday. He had no idea what to expect, but he was willing to give it a try. After all, as Jamal had said, you only live once.
