Chapter Two: The Stranger's Warning

256 Words
Daniel drove back to Lagos with the photograph on the passenger seat. Traffic crawled along the expressway, but his mind raced much faster. Who had sent the picture? Who was the woman? And why now, after ten years? Back in his Victoria Island office, he locked the door and studied the photograph under a bright desk lamp. There were four men. His father. His uncle Benson. Family lawyer Richard Okeke. And businessman Chief Emmanuel Durojaiye. Daniel froze. Chief Emmanuel had died only two years earlier. Richard had retired. Only Uncle Benson remained alive. Coincidence? Or something more? His thoughts were interrupted by a knock. His secretary entered. "Sir, someone left this package downstairs. They refused to give their name." Daniel opened it carefully. Inside lay an old wristwatch. His father's wristwatch. The one he wore every single day. Folded beneath it was another note. They are watching you. Trust no one. Not even your family. A chill ran down Daniel's spine. How could anyone possess his father's watch? Just then, the office lights suddenly went out. Darkness swallowed the room. A loud crash echoed from the reception area. Someone had entered the building. Daniel quietly opened his desk drawer and reached for the licensed pistol he kept for emergencies. Footsteps approached his office. Slow. Deliberate. Then they stopped outside his door. Silence. A folded piece of paper slid beneath the door. When Daniel picked it up, his blood ran cold. It contained only one sentence. If you continue this search, the next funeral will be yours.
