I was sat in my office, going through all the paperwork that needed to be sorted for that day, it was much more than last week, requests of leaves of absence and requests for larger houses. It was almost too much for one person to deal with. But, as Alpha it was duty, I had my beta Matthew to help me, but I had the final say in everything.
This was my life, running my fathers pack now that he had past away, we weren’t a large pack, but we were the most feared in the country, and anyone who came across us knew not to get on my bad side.
I sighed and rubbed my tired eyes, leaning back in the chair. This would be so much easier if I could find my mate, a Luna helps run a pack. I didn’t care who she was, human or werewolf, if the moon goddess chose her for me. She would be mine. Unless of course it was a vampire, I wouldn’t mind a witch, but I would never mate with the undead.
I lifted my head when a knock sounded at my door. “Come in.” I called.
The door opened to reveal Matthew, his eyes just as tired as mine. “I have finished with the new recruits, they begin training tomorrow.” He informs me, moving to slouch in the chair across from mine. “Any luck with the paper work?”
Matthew was tall, but still a good few inches smaller than me, his brown hair slightly mattered and messy, it was getting quite long. Longer than normal. He had hazel coloured eyes and muscles that could even put me to shame; he was a hard worker and the best beta I could have asked for.
“It’s getting there, but I might not finish tonight.” I admit, once again rubbing my eyes.
“I can stay and help, I’ve nothing left to do anyway.” Matthew suggests, pulling some of the unfinished pile towards himself. “It looks like you have done most of it, just approvals left.”
I nod, “the help is appreciated.”
“You know, I was thinking of going into town soon, checking how things are there. What would you think to joining me?” Asked my beta, and I knew instantly what he wanted.
“I don’t have time to search for my mate, I have responsibilities to the pack.” I frown, taking a sip of my coffee, the only thing that is keeping me awake.
“I know that, I was thinking more for a break.” He insists, “you have done so much already for the pack, you have built us a small town of our own. We are fully self sufficient, we even sell some of our stock to neighbouring towns. Don’t you think you deserve the break?”
I sigh, knowing that he has a point, my mind is always focused on my work and I never venture out anymore. No wonder I never found my mate, I never leave the safety of the pack. Matthew already found Natasha and is happy, they’re even expecting their first child. I wanted that, a family to call my own.
I was 27 now, my father died years ago and so far the pack has been in capable hands, but if I don’t have a son or daughter, it will go to someone else, another alpha who lost their territory. I needed to find my fated mate before it was too late.
“Alright.” I say, “you have convinced me to go.”
“Then we leave first thing in the morning, I know a café just at the edge of town that goes a great breakfast, we’ll start there.” Matthew smiled, knowing he had won this round.
“Yeah ok, but first we need to finish this paperwork and get some sleep.” I say with a shake of my head, but really I’m just as excited.
What if I meet my mate tomorrow?
What would she be like?
Would she be human and know nothing of our kind?
What would I do if she were human, how would I break the news to her that she is the fated mate of a wolf shifter?
I had so many questions running through my mind that I couldn’t keep up, so many answers that were just our of my reach. I finished the pack paperwork as quickly as I could, the task much easier with the help of my beta.
“I can’t wait to meet her either.” Drei growled, my inner wolf coming to the surface.
I could talk to Drei whenever I wanted, it was a perk of being born an alpha, we were more connected with our wolves. Even from birth we would be able to shift, and apparently I did so many times.
“I wonder who she will be, what she will be.” I reply, my mind wandering once more and I leave my office and go to my suite.
“I don’t care who or what she is so long as she is ours.” He replied, almost forcing his way to the surface.
“Drei not now, we need to sleep. I promise we’ll shift tomorrow.”
“I’ll hold you to that.”
“You always do.”
