35 ‘Oh my God!’ Cissie clutched the cablegram, her hands trembling. ‘He’s going, he’s definitely going.’ Charlie pricked his ears at hearing her distress and padded over to rest his silky head on her lap. ‘I knew he would find a way on to that blasted plane. Jane’s going to be beside herself.’ Cissie reached for her cardigan and headed for the door but stopped. ‘Dorothy. I’ll call her. She’ll know what to do.’ She dialled the operator and asked to be connected to her friend. The phone rang and rang. ‘I’m sorry, there doesn’t appear to be anyone home.’ She slammed the receiver back on to the hook and took a deep breath. ‘Very well. I’ll go to Frank and Jane’s now. If I go right this minute, it’ll all be over and done with and I won’t have to keep wondering what to do.’ Cissie’s mind
