12 George decided to walk to Ada’s and take her a leg of mutton he’d procured from a trip out to their eldest brother Frank’s the weekend before. He rounded the corner to see that sorry man, Tom Forrest, standing on the porch, knocking at the front door. George heard his sister’s voice, a thin thread trailing from within the house, beseeching her ex-husband to leave. Another face appeared at the window, peering out with concern. George recognised her instantly. It was Doris. Tom continued pounding. He suddenly turned around, anger distorting his face. His expression quickly turned to bemusement as he came face to face with George standing so close behind him on the top step. ‘I believe I heard my sister ask you to leave, Tom.’ The man shrank back for a moment before regaining confidence
