"For the last time, I don't wanna talk about it!"
"But this time was most powerful!"
"I don't wanna talk about it!"
"We should at least chart the frequency of the blasts and measure the effects they have."
"Good for you then, you do that - I don't wanna talk about it!"
Flare had to admit the kid was stubborn and stuck to his own rules - something he could greatly hate and greatly respect about him at the same time.
They were at school, lunch to be specific. Blake was doing his loner kid stuff by crafting useless art, Tobias was dancing to music playing in his head and Light was nagging Blake into confronting his problems. "Light, STOP!" Jinx spoke again harshly.
The angel jumped at the outburst and once Blake snapped back he apologized profusely, which Light gladly accepted.
Yeah, Flare was pretty much caught up on what was happening on the ride to school by Tobias. Jinx seems to jump out whenever Blake is angry or frustrated and it's getting harder and harder to control it. Luckily, so far he only seems to lose it at Light during one of her lectures. She says she's okay with it as long as he doesn't flip at his parents or his sisters. She's a good punching bag like that. So whenever Blake IS mad at his family, he hold it in until Light says something and he'll flip. Poor guy feels awful after, but Light always says "It could've been worse."
"Hi Blake!" a girl playing jump rope alone a few feet away waved to the boy. He quickly looked away from her, a shade of pink forming on his cheeks. Light just smirked at him.
"You should go and talk to her." She advised.
"No way, not until I've finished this."
"He has a crush on her." Tobias whispered to Flare.
"I do not!" The boy was pinker now "I just want her to be my wife!"
"That doesn't mean crush?" Flare asked.
"Nope. Simple partnership. That's all."
"What are you almost done with?" Light said, leaning over to back, already peeking at what he's made.
"The gift I'll give to my wife." Blake brought it out for the other two to see. It was a paper ring that read in blue pen: Will you marry me?
"She can't say no. It's part of life to get married."
"This young?" The angel questioned.
"Not young. I'm FIVE, remember? That's a whole hand!"
Light playfully rolled her eyes and laughed a little "Alrighty then."
He turned around and shyly walked up to the girl. She had gone back to her skipping, but smiled upon seeing Blake. He went even pinker and his hands started shaking immediately. He hadn't said a word yet but had a strong urge to run away back to his corner.
"You can do this!" Light encouraged from his ear "Maybe don't ask right away. Get to know her first."
"How?" the toddler asked.
"Like y'know basic greetings. 'Hi, what's your name?' Things like that."
Flare did a double take. He didn't even know her name? How was he supposed to marry her without knowing her name? Just address her directly from now on? Give her a nickname? Flare tried talking Blake out of it, saying that he clearly didn't think this through and he should go back to being a loner, but the boy was busy looking and listening to the girl to pay attention to him.
She was rambling on about losing a tooth yesterday evening. "I got a full euro from the tooth fairy!" She grinned, showing off her missing molar. Her brown eyes shone with pride as she wiggled a loose front tooth. "When this one comes out, it'll be worth four euro!"
"Hi, what's your name?" Blake blurted out at last.
The girl raised an eyebrow, they'd been having a full conversation for a few minutes now and he didn't know her name? "You know my name." She said casually, itching her dirty blonde hair out of habit.
"Uhm" Blake froze again. "Do I ask her now?" He asked Light.
"No," She said "You must remember her name." The angel popped into the boys brain and headed to the emotions headquarters, browsing recent memory books for the girl's name.
"Just roll with it from here," Tobias advised now "Maybe trick her into to saying it."
The girl laughed at Blake's outlandish behavior "You are a funny boy, Blake."
"I am?"
"Sound confident." Light popped back out to give that advice before popping in within a split-second.
"I am," the boy stated more confidently "I am a funny boy."
The girl chuckled again "Wanna jump rope?"
"I am a funny boy. Hi, what's your name? I mean, I know your name. I am funny."
The bell rung, indicating lunch time was over. Blake and the girl shared disappointed looks.
"Maybe tomorrow?" she said.
"I'm funny."
"You are. We'll talk then."
As she walked away, Blake felt weightless, almost like he was in midair. It was an extraordinary feeling he hoped to cling on to for the rest of the day-
"BLAKE YOU'RE FLOATING!" Light pointed at the ground and Blake gasped at his current midair state.
"Wait, how do I get down?" he panicked as he flew higher and higher, just up to the top of the school.
"The ledge!" Tobias floated with him "Grab the ledge of the school roof!"
The toddler obliged and took several deep breaths. He positioned himself on top of the roof (Thanks to the help of Light, Flare just yelled at him not to look down or he'd go splat like an egg) And once the flying moments passed he dropped onto the roof and watched as teachers brought in their own class. He called and screamed for them to notice, but the roof was too high up for them to see without squinting at the bright sun and the chatter of the children below drowned Blake out. He was stuck.
"Gonna go out on a limb and say this was your fault." Flare finally addressed the angel directly, narrowing his eyes at her. She put her hand to her chest, as if to act offended.
"Just HOW is this my fault?"
"It isn't. I just wanted a reason to pin this on you."
"That won't solve anything though."
"Do you think I care about solving anything?"
"Guys, it's really hot." Blake used his hand as a fan while he stuck his tongue out.
"Yeah, I'm drying up over here." Tobias' skin cracked and dried up like SpongeBob in shell city.
"Okay just relax, let's work on your tan to impress your lady friend." Flare said, lying down and enjoying the sun himself.
"Or we could scream and call for help." Light suggested.
After ten minutes of that, nobody seemed to be coming out to hear the racket. Another ten minutes go by and even with the help of Tobias as a megaphone no one could hear the child cries. He gave up after an another five minutes as he was starting to feel a little hoarse.
He lay on his back, staring up a the baby blue sky and felt himself getting jealous of the clouds up there, slowly drifting to where ever they want while he's stuck here.
"This is my life now, isn't it?" he said.
Flare looked over at him, surprised. He didn't expect things to get so dark so quickly. Oh well, if that was the mood now, he might as well add to it.
"It doesn't have to be like this, you could always jump."
"Woah!" Light gasped.
"We could?" Blake asked.
"No, no you couldn't and you can't and you better not try!" Light warned, sending a passive aggressive look to Flare. He just grinned, knowing he was getting under her skin.
"I'll try something instead," she decided "I'm sorry, I should have tried this ages ago." She looked up to the sky and called with all her might "Blessed, here!"
Nothing happened. The angel tried calling for her senior again, but Blessed either couldn't hear her or was ignoring her.
"Blessed, here now please!" if not for her gentle tone, Blake would think she was demanding she appear. He looked up at the sky as bigger clouds drifted by, one even blocking the sun, so the heat problem was taken care of.
"Does Blessed live up there?" Blake asked, pointing to the clouds.
Light nodded "Yep, she's up there. Sometimes she can even see us down here if she wanted to."
"Really?!"
"Yep and I know she can see and hear us so I'm not sure WHY SHE'S IGNORING MY CALLS FOR HELP."
The angel practically yelled that last part to the skies, still nothing.
"Couldn't you try Mayhem, Flare?" Tobias suggested.
"I could but I don't want to. I'd rather work on my tan." Flare said, not looking at any of them.
"Typical useless Flare," Blake grumbled "I liked you better when you were asleep."
"I liked YOU better when I was asleep." Flare could admit that wasn't one of his best retorts, but he refused to take back-talk from a toddler.
He was being dramatic anyway, how long could they really stay up here without anyway knowing?
**************************************************************************
The bell rang for home. Blake snapped awake and looked around as kids began dispersing to their families from the front of the school. He even spotted his older sister Mariam running to their parent's car. They didn't get out to look for him, they just started the car and joined the traffic for home.
"Wait, they're leaving without me?!" Blake cried in confusion.
"Perhaps they're in a rush?" Flare presumed "Y'know for Hayley in daycare or whatever."
"They're ALWAYS in a rush," Blake sounded angry and more desperate than ever to get off this roof. "I will NOT be left behind again!"
Blake ran to the other side of the roof, building speed and feeling that weightlessness once more. Flare and Light clung to either side of his shoulder, shouting 'What are you doing?' and 'You don't know if this is actually gonna work!'
"Blake I was kidding before," Flare nervously chuckled "Well mostly. I mean, just don't jump!"
"Do it Blake!" Tobias ran along side him, morphing his arms into bird wings "Fly free like a dove!"
"Okay...HERE - I - GO!" The boy leaped even higher into the air at rapid speed, losing sight of the family car and barely dodging a building as he floated aimlessly around town. He screamed as he felt himself weighing down to the ground at a dangerous speed.
"Okay, we did not think this through!" Tobias' wings were clipped and he was falling just as fast beside Blake. Flare and Light clung on to Blake's uniform for dear life as they hurtled towards the earth. Their vision was so dizzy and blurred they couldn't get a good sighting of where their bodies were gonna go 'splat.'
"AAAAAAAH!" Were the profound last words of Blake Harret as he zoomed into a random footpath. The last thing he could feel before blacking out was another's small arms wrapping around him with a 'What the heck?'
When he awoke, he found himself face to face with the girl from before, her brown eyes were bloodshot with fear, and Blake felt rather embarrassed that her second impression of him was when he landed on top of her. "Blake? I didn't know you could fly!" Her eyed switched from fear to wonder in an instant it was almost concerning. The boy got up and helped his crush off her back.
"I am so sorry," he mustered up the courage to say "That was an accident I was trying to get home and-"
"One minute I was just walking down the street to the field when suddenly- SWISH! Then I heard an 'AAAAAAAAH!' Then you just flew down from the sky and landed on me."
"SORRY!"
"It's okay!" she said.
Blake grew all pink again and attempted Light's advice once more "I am...uhhh- sorry." that word seemed to take up his entire vocabulary now. The girl played it off pretty well despite being attacked by some flying toddler boy.
"Hey," she asked "Do you wanna play some football with me and a friend?"
"Say yes," Light said flatly, fixing up her hair after the landing "No extra remarks. No flirty subtext. SAY. YES."
"YES." the boy said. The girl clapped her hands and lead him toward the field she was going to all while keeping conversation.
"I always like going to the field after school to play football because more people are there! Plus, my parent's won't be all 'Laney you're spending too much time at home.' and 'Laney you need to get outside more and make friends!' Like I don't already have friends."
"Ohhh LANEY! So that's your name!"
Laney stopped dead in her tracks and stared at Blake, slightly hurt "You...really didn't know my name?"
Flare, Light and Tobias all face-palmed while Blake let out a donkey-like, nervous laugh.
Yep, this is all going so incredibly well, Flare doesn't even need to do anything.
