“Next….We have to find the police officer who got One - Blade’s confession with the Chief.” Ryan completed John’s sentence.
Ryan left the restaurant to search the documents again for some clues while John followed him. Together they went to the superintendent to ask for the files again. They began their search after that.
Next Morning….
“You checked the files overnight. Did you both find anything?” The Superintendent asked.
“We have. Ten years ago, the one who interrogated One - Blade with the Chief was you, right?” John asked.
“What do you mean?” The Superintendent asked simply.
“It took a lot of work to find you. We checked the files and found out that the police station caught fire not long ago, in which some old files were burned, including the files from the case ten years ago. Fortunately, Inspector Ryan here has a wide network. He visited some policemen from that year and asked around to eventually find out that the two of you interrogated him together. You started to make rapid advances in your career since that case.” John said.
“Yes. And then?” The superintendent asked arrogantly.
“And then, we suspect that ten years ago you killed that teacher. Then you framed One - Blade for the murder with the Chief.” Ryan replied.
“You accused me of something that I didn’t do. Fine! I want to hear exactly how I’m a murderer.” The Superintendent asked for proof.
“Ten years ago, One - Blade killed three people. You were ordered to arrest him. You find the suspect near the restaurant. During the chase, you grappled with the suspect and unfortunately, killed the teacher by accident who was on his way to the brothel. And all this that happened was witnessed by the Chief. You used the huge reward on One - Blade and the opportunity to get promoted to a permanent police officer to bribe the Chief who was patrolling in the area.
Subsequently, you and the Chief interrogated One - Blade overnight. While he was still drunk, you two rushed the process and made him confess the first three charges and pinned the fourth murder on him, too. You guys killed two birds with one stone. You got a promotion and the Chief made a fortune. Well played.” John said.
“Listen to yourself! You have to have evidence to speak such nonsense.” The Superintendent said angrily.
“It was a case from ten years ago. You thought it was over forever. But you didn’t expect ten years later that teacher’s lover, a former call girl, sent a file to the Chief to force him to confess. That Chief was a timid person, so he was scared to death. He discussed it with you about what to do. But you thought, in for a penny, in for a pound. Why not kill him to tie a loose end?” John said.
The Superintendent clapped and laughed “Bravo! Are you investing a case or writing a detective novel? We all know what happened. It was a perfectly locked room. How did I kill him then?”
“Aishhh…..That little trick can only fool idiots. The crime scene was seen as a locked room with three premises. Door locked from inside, window locked from inside, and a spinning exhaust fan. Other than that, there was no other way out. And according to the police officers at the scene that night, after they broke into the room, they checked door and window locks and saw it with their own eyes that the exhaust fan was spinning.” John said.
“What do you mean? Then how could a person get through it when the fan was spinning?” Ryan asked suspiciously.
“It was just a deceptive trick. The killer did two things. He placed a mirror below the curtain and placed a floor fan that was turned on at a blind spot. So the killer could easily climb through the exhaust fan that was not turned on at that time. But the people who entered the room would mistakenly think that the fan was always spinning.
You even thought of such a trick, I can see that you were very desperate at that time. After the murder, no one went in or out of the yard, which means the killer was still hiding in the police station. You escaped from the room and blended in the lobby on the first floor, where you pretended to hear the gunfire with everyone else. A police officer told me in the morning that he turned off the fan. So after the crime and before we arrived, who could come in to retrieve the floor fan? Nobody, except you. And no matter how smart a criminal is, he always leaves evidence at the crime scene.
After the murder, you jumped through the fan onto the flower bed on the first floor. Since, you pretended to be just off work, obviously you were wearing your police uniform. But something is missing? Missing a button which was in your uniform pocket now. And on this button, there is a small red thread. I tied it on the button and placed it under the fan. Only the killer would worry if he left any evidence at the scene.” John explained smirking at the Superintendent.
“There is a saying, You’re too smart for your own good.” John said while the Superintendent finally plead guilty.
John was very happy not because he had solved the case but the gift that has been given to him for his achievement, the expensive gramophone.
On the other hand….
The Superintendent has plead guilty and been put to death. One of my people will fill his position. Mr. Robert’s influence and power will gradually diminish. This is the right time. The tooth is pulled out.” The Boss said to one of his subordinates.
“Although the situation is developing well for us, Ryan and his officers, their investigation is very thorough. I am afraid if it’s allowed to continue,
It will be no more disaster for us.” The subordinate said.
“Ryan only understands brute force. John was the key. Now, we need to deal with him as soon as possible.” Boss said.
“The thing is John is from Cambridge. His family is also rich.” The subordinate said.
“And you think with his educational background, his manners, the way he operates, do you really think he’s going to mix with this rabble?” Boss laughed.
Next…..
John and Ryan met in a bar to celebrate the success of finally cracking the case.
“The final payment of the case’s consulting fee. Count it.” Ryan said handing the money to John.
“Thank you, Inspector Ryan. Enough to maintain my basic food and clothing.” John said gratefully.
“Why don’t you ask your family to support you? I was startled. You are from such a rich family. Why are you living such a poor life?” Ryan asked.
“Let me ask you. If you can only choose between money and pride, what would you choose?” John asked a simple question.
“Of course, I choose pride.” Ryan answered.
“See? We are the same.” John said smiling.
