Thinking that the alarm was ringing, John woke up but the telephone was actually ringing. He received the call “Hello?”
“Listen! A few policemen came for you just now.” Someone from the other side said.
“Policemen?” John asked and peeked through the window. He sneaked through the backdoor when someone whistled from behind. That someone was actually the newly promoted young police officer Ryan.
“Morning, Mr. John.” Ryan greeted and John too greeted while trying to find more ways to run from there. John ran and Ryan also followed to catch him. Finally, John got surrounded by Ryan and his fellow officers and knocked him out. When John became conscious, he was already in the police station. After sometime, Ryan came to interrogate him.
“How should I address you, Sir?” John asked and Ryan replied that he is the inspector of Concession Police.
“An inspector at such an young age! I am impressed.” John said and in return, Ryan told him to cut the nonsense and said from now on, John should truthfully answer every question he ask and if dare to lie, he will tear him apart. Ryan interrogated him and got to know that John has a double bachelor’s degree in math and medicine and also studied law. Ryan didn’t say or show anything but he was actually pretty much surprised as well as impressed with John.
Then Ryan asked John that what did he do last night at 9:00 pm for which John replied that he got drunk last night and can’t remember anything. But John didn’t know that he was in the police custody and that he was charged as a killer in the murder case of a well known politician.
When John got to know, he asked “How did he die?”
“At 9:00 last night, there was the inauguration ceremony of the new house of a famous entrepreneur. According to witnesses, at 8:45, after the victim, the politician and his three subordinates entered the venue, they said that they had a fierce conflict with you. When the politician went to the bathroom, his subordinates were just standing outside the room, As the bathroom was made with full of mirrors, those who were standing outside clearly saw a hand coming out of the mirror and stabbed the politician with a knife.” Ryan explained to John about what happened yesterday.
“Wait! Wha..What do you mean? You’re suspecting me of murder?” John exclaimed.
“Exactly. If you didn’t kill him, then why did you run this morning? What did you do at 9:00 pm last night?” Ryan interrogated.
“Last night, I was thrown out of that house by the bodyguards. Then I found his car in the parking lot. I scratched and smashed his car but the car keeper saw me and I ran from there and went back home. After waking up this morning, I got arrested. I thought you arrested me for scratching his car.” John said.
“Inspector Ryan, we shouldn’t be nice to such a brazen liar and believe him, or he will take advantage of our kindness.” The assistant inspector said angrily.
“So, you’ll torture me to extort a confession? Fine. I want to see my lawyer. This is a police station. Not a land beyond law. Gentlemen, go easy on me! We’re civilized people.” John said when the screaming of a lady was heard from the background. It was Lily, the young reporter from daily newspaper.
Lily’s father was the most famous well known politician who actually helped Ryan to be an inspector. Lily ran from her house because she didn’t support her father’s ways to solve problems. She can’t stand injustice at all.
Ryan came outside and saw Lily was arguing with one of his subordinates to let her come inside the station. He stopped them and asked Lily about what was her purpose for coming here.
“I heard you are dealing with a big case. You can focus on your case. I’ll just sit there and listen without disturbing you. Please Brother Ryan, tell me what happened last night. You care about me, right?” Lily asked Ryan innocently fluttering her big doe eyes. Ryan can’t resist of course because Lily was like his little sister and he can’t say no to her.
“Last night after the murder happened, we got to the crime scene as fast as possible. There was a doctor already there who said he was the first one to get there after the incident happened. But when he reached, the victim was already dying and couldn’t make it. The most trusted bodyguard informed me that his boss was stabbed by someone and the murderer came with a knife from inside the mirror. All the glass walls were checked carefully, but nobody was there. Also, after the victim was stabbed, no one has entered or left that place.” Ryan informed the whole thing to Lily. Then, Ryan and Lily both came to where John was.
“Inspector Ryan, I don’t think this is appropriate.” John said pointing to Lily and Ryan asked what.
“A journalist taking part in the interrogation. Does that comply with regulations? Public opinion will disturb judicial justice. It’s common sense.” John said.
“How do you know she’s a journalist?” Ryan asked surprised.
“The inner part of her right middle finger has a bump. There is a slight trace of unwashed ink on her fingertips. It indicates that her job is related to writing. From her dress to her shoes, what she wears is more than 300 dollars. But she uses a cheap pen. The pen looks like that of the street tabloid of a daily newspaper.” John explained.
“Street Tabloid? Do you know the circulation of our newspapers?” Lily asked outraged.
“The main criteria to determine if a newspaper is a broadsheet or tabloid lie in the report’s quality and the depth of thoughts. Even if your newspaper has a circulation of 10 millions, it’s still a tabloid.” John said to lily.
“You!” Lily fumed but John continued.
“It costs a dozen of dollars to get a hairstyle like yours. But in your hair, there is a smell of cheap soap usually provided by small hotels. It indicates that you didn’t sleep at home last night. And you wear your stockings inside out, which means you left home in such a hurry that you didn’t have time to pack up. A girl from a wealthy family running away from home after a quarrel with her family.” John explained where Lily and Ryan sat shocked. But Ryan quickly composed himself and asked John what else he can tell.
“You were promoted to inspector not long ago, right? John said to Ryan and Lily asked how can he even tell that.
“His watch is expensive. Other inspectors are afraid of being called corrupt, so they dare not reveal their wealth. Moreover, since he’s a rookie, his subordinates disapprove of him. So, during the interrogation, they often crossed the line. He get to be an inspector without case-handling experience. That means he has connections. According to his demeanor, he seem to be a gang member. Plus, the way he reject and obey you at the same time. I can tell one of your family members is his boss. Such special relations forced him to break the rules and let a journalist hear the interrogation.
But I’m sorry to tell you, as a suspect that hasn’t been convicted, I have the right to refuse any interrogation.” John said to Lily and Ryan.
“You seem to be a better fit for an inspector than me.” Ryan remarked.
“Why did you argue with the victim?” Lily asked John to which he answered “The victim blew up his account during stock trading and he went there to collect debts from him.”
“You didn’t get the money from him, and you were also humiliated in front of the people. Therefore, you intended to kill him.” Lily said flatly.
“Inspector Ryan, you let an i***t interrogate on your behalf? Won’t you feel humiliated if people find out? John mocked Ryan.
“Say it again if you have the guts!” Lily asked angrily.
“Inspector Ryan, one cannot be named a criminal before the court pronounces the judgement. I cannot be a murderer as the police fail to provide valid evidence of a crime.” John said.
After sometime, the car keeper who was there yesterday night came and testified that John was indeed there scratching the car and the police verified the confession.
“The car keeper came over. He identified that you were the guy who scratched the car. But the exact time when you did can’t be confirmed. You were likely to murder the victim before scratching the car.” Ryan told John smirking inwardly.
Ryan knew that John is not the murderer but his detective skills were highly remarkable. So he wants to keep him here so that he can catch the real killer with the help of John.
“So this is not over?” John asked Ryan shocked.
“But I believe you are not the real killer. However, you are still a criminal suspect after all.If you want to be clear of the suspicion, you should help me find out the murderer.” Ryan said innocently while John sat there shocked.
Ryan continued “ Actually I can set you free, but don’t you want to know what’s going on behind such a weird and brutal case? Do you want to swagger through the streets as a criminal suspect? Do you see the female journalist outside? She firmly believes you are the murderer. I can set you free but I can’t control what she writes in her article after you come out.” Jon sat there thinking for some time and then said “I want to go to the crime spot.”
