Selene's pulse sped, her heart banging against her ribs. She glanced up at Kael, her mind screaming with uncertainty. She had never thought this discussion would come to pass, yet here she stood, balanced on the edge of a cliff.
"I want... another opportunity." The words left her lips in a whisper, barely audible.
Kael's brow wrinkled, confusion clouding his face. "Another what?"
Selene’s lips separated, but the truth stuck in her throat, heavy and jagged. She couldn’t bring herself to say it – not yet. Her hands trembled as she clenched them into fists, trying to find the confidence she needed. The air around them felt thick with the weight of what she was about to reveal.
Kael's grip on her shoulders eased slightly, his eyes still locked onto hers, looking, asking for answers. "Selene, you have to tell me," he pushed, his voice a low rumble of fear. "Whatever it is, I’ll face it with you. You know that."
Selene’s breath hitched, her chest tightening as though a vice was squeezing the air out of her lungs. The weight of her secret threatened to crush her, yet she knew there was no going back now. She had to say it, even if it broke the shaky peace between them.
"I want to marry another Alpha," she whispered, the words tumbling out like a confession that had been caged inside her for too long. Her voice trembled, filled with the confusion and despair that had been building for months. "As my second mate."
Kael's entire body went still. His eyes widened, shock running through him like a cold wave. The room seemed to shrink around them, the silence so thick it was almost smothering. He stared at her as though he hadn’t heard her right, as if the very thought of what she had just said was impossible.
The silence stretched between them, neither dare to speak. The weight of Selene's words hung in the air, a live, breathing thing that threatened to swallow them both.
Kael's jaw clenched tightly, the muscles in his face moving as he fought to understand what she had just said. "You want... what?" His voice was low, scary, a sharp contrast to the kindness he had shown earlier. There was an edge to it now, a sharpness that cut through the thick anxiety in the room.
Selene swallowed hard, her heart thudding in her chest. She forced herself to look at him, though her eyes flickered with fear. "I want another mate," she repeated, her voice louder this time, though still trembling at the edges. "Someone who can... who can give me what I need. It’s not that I don’t love you, Kael. I do. But I need more."
"You’re asking me to share you with another Alpha?" he growled, his voice low and filled with a dangerous fury. "You’re asking me to let you take another mate because I’m not... enough?"
Selene winced at the venom in his words, tears brimming in her eyes once more. "It’s not about you being enough or not. It’s about what I need. It’s about me being fulfilled, Kael. I’ve tried to ignore it, I’ve tried to live with it, but I can’t anymore. It’s tearing me apart inside."
Kael took a step back, his mind spinning. This wasn’t something he could fight with strength or power. This was something intangible, something he couldn’t simply overpower. The realization made his blood run cold. He was losing control, and he didn’t know how to stop it.
He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to settle his breathing, trying to find some way to make sense of this nightmare. When he opened them again, his look was colder, more detached.
"You’re asking me to let you betray our bond," he said softly, the words like ice. "To let you destroy everything we built, everything I thought we had together. How can you ask that of me, Selene? How can you ask me to just stand by and watch as you take another mate?"
Selene’s tears spilled over, her heart breaking at the pain she saw in his eyes. "I never wanted to hurt you," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "But I can’t keep living a lie. I can’t keep pretending everything is fine when it’s not. I’m dying inside, Kael."
Kael’s jaw stiffened, his hands forming into fists once more. He had always been able to fix things, to solve problems with brute strength or sheer willpower. But this... this wasn’t something he could fix. This was something he couldn’t fight.
The realization hit him like a punch to the gut, leaving him stunned. For the first time in his life, Alpha Kael didn’t have the answers. And that scared him more than anything.
"What happens now, Selene?" he asked, his voice low and filled with a heavy sadness. "What happens to us?"
Selene shook her head, her tears falling freely now. "I don’t know," she whispered. "I don’t know what happens next. But I can’t keep pretending. I can’t keep living like this."
Kael stared at her, his heart breaking as the woman he loved slipped further and further away from him. He had always been the stronger, the one in charge. But now, he understood that strength alone wasn’t enough. It could never be enough to fix what was broken between them.
He turned away from her, his shoulders falling in failure. The quiet between them was overwhelming, a gap that neither of them knew how to cross.
And in that moment, Kael understood that for the first time in his life, he didn’t know how to fight for what mattered most. He didn’t know how to fight for Selene.
His voice shook with emotion as he asked, "And who is this Alpha you think can give you what I can’t? Who is it that you want to be your second mate?"
Selene paused, her breath catching in her throat. She didn’t want to hurt him any more than she already had, but she had to be honest. She had to lay it all out before him, no matter how painful.
He repeated again “what is the name of this alpha you want as your second mate?”
Selene stammered “his name is Alpha Darius.” it's someone from Kael's past, making his eyes widen in shock and betrayal.
Kael, reeling from the news, gives an ultimatum: "If you pursue this, our bond is broken, and you'll never be welcome in our pack again."
Just as Selene is about to answer, a ruckus breaks outside, and a pack member bursts in with urgent news: "The Council of Alphas has summoned you both to an emergency meeting. They've discovered a dark secret about our pack's past, and it threatens to destroy everything we hold dear."
