Kael and Selene walked side by side through the dim stone hallway of the Council’s fortress. The air was thick with anxiety, not just between them but in the very atmosphere around them. Kael looked at Selene, her face unclear. Their recent fight still hung over them like a dark cloud, but for now, they had to set it aside. The Council had called, and neither of them could afford to ignore it.
As they entered the big hall, the council members were already sitting at the long, dark wooden table. The room was dimly lit by glowing candles, their flames casting shadows on the stern faces of the leaders. Kael took a deep breath, steeling himself for what was to come. Selene stood beside him, her hands clasped tightly in front of her, her face a mask of peace, though Kael knew better.
"Alpha Kael," Elder Aldric began, his voice low and gravelly. "We have summoned you here to discuss a grave matter. One that threatens the very foundation of your leadership."
Kael nodded, stepping forward. "I understand, Elder. But what is this matter? What could be so urgent that you call me here without warning?"
Aldric traded looks with the other leaders, each one nodding gravely. "It is about your ancestor, Kael," Aldric added.
"A secret pact was made generations ago—a pact that has been kept hidden from all but the highest members of the Council."
Kael frowned, confused. "A pact? What kind of pact? And why is this the first I'm hearing of it?"
Elder Lyria, a woman with silver hair and sharp eyes, spoke next. "Your great-great-grandfather, Alpha Theron, made a deal with a rival pack. He traded something very valuable... loyalty."
Kael blinked, surprised. "Loyalty? What do you mean?"
"Theron promised his loyalty to the rival pack in exchange for dark powers—strength beyond that of a normal Alpha," Lyria explained. "But that power came at a price. The pack's loyalty to its Alpha was fractured, and that fracture has been passed down through your bloodline."
Kael’s mind spun as he tried to understand what he was hearing. "So you're saying my pack’s loyalty has been... tainted? Because of a deal made centuries ago?"
Aldric nodded seriously. "Yes. And now, the consequences of that betrayal are coming to light. The loyalty of your people is wavering, Kael. They can feel it, even if they don't understand why. This weakness in your bond as their Alpha is putting everyone at risk."
Kael tightened his hands, anger bubbling beneath the surface. "Why was this kept a secret? Why wasn't I told about this before?"
Lyria’s eyes softened. "The Council believed it was best to keep it hidden. We thought the damage could be contained... but we were wrong. Now, you must face the truth, Kael."
Elder Aldric's eyes narrowed, his words low and anxious. 'We've seen the signs, Kael. The pack's loyalty is shifting. If we don't act now, we risk losing everything we've built.'"
- "Lyria's face turned grave. 'We're not just worried about the pack's loyalty, Kael. We're worried about the enemy pack's growing power. If they sense weakness, they'll strike.'”
Selene shifted beside him, her eyes narrowing slightly as she listened. She saw an opportunity—a way to use this news to her advantage. She had been patient, biding her time, but now… now she could use this to push for what she wanted.
Aldric cleared his throat, breaking the quiet. "There is only one way to restore the loyalty of your people. You must step down as Alpha, Kael. Or… bring someone who has not been tainted by this betrayal to lead in your stead. An Alpha whose loyalty is unbroken."
Kael’s heart sank. "Step down?" His voice was barely a whisper. "You’re asking me to abandon my pack? My people?"
"It is the only way," Lyria said softly. "Your bloodline is the source of the fracture. If you remain as Alpha, the pack will continue to suffer. But if a new Alpha takes your place, one without the shadow of betrayal over them, the bond can be restored."
Selene’s lips twisted into a small, almost unnoticeable smile. This was her chance. If Kael had to step down… then perhaps she could finally bring in another Alpha. One who could please her in ways Kael never could.
She took a big breath, faking worry. "Kael, this isn’t just about you. It’s about the pack. You’ve always done what’s best for them, haven’t you? Maybe… maybe this is the right choice."
Kael turned to her, his eyes sparkling with a mixture of rage and hurt. "You want me to step down, don’t you? You’ve wanted this all along."
Selene flinched at the charge but quickly regained her calm. "That’s not fair, Kael. I’m thinking of the pack. You heard the Council. If this is the only way to restore what was lost, then… maybe we should consider it."
Kael shook his head, frustration bubbling over. "Consider it? You know what this means, Selene. If I step down, I lose everything—my power, my place as Alpha. And you… you would get what you want, wouldn’t you? Another mate."
Selene’s eyes widened in mock surprise. "That’s not what this is about! Kael, I’m trying to help you. I’m trying to help us."
"Help us?" Kael’s voice was thick with sarcasm. "Or help yourself?"
Aldric cleared his throat again, his eyes moving between the two. "This is not the time for personal quarrels. The pack’s survival is at stake."
Kael turned back to the Council, his hands shaking with barely controlled rage. "And what if I refuse? What if I don’t step down?"
Lyria’s face hardened. "Then the pack will suffer. Loyalty will continue to erode, and the rival pack your ancestor made the deal with… they will see this as their opportunity. War is not far off, Kael. If you remain as Alpha, you may very well doom your people."
Kael’s chest heaved with the weight of his choice. He looked at Selene, who was watching him with a strange glint in her eyes—part worry, part calculation. She was waiting for his choice, just like everyone else.
"I need time," Kael said finally, his voice stressed. "I need time to think about this."
Aldric nodded. "We understand. But time is not on your side, Alpha. Choose wisely, and choose quickly."
Kael turned to leave, but Selene reached out and grabbed his arm. "Kael…"
He stopped, his jaw clenched. "What, Selene?"
She paused, then said quietly, "I’m with you, whatever you decide. But… maybe there’s another way to think about this. Maybe… bringing in another Alpha isn’t such a bad idea."
Kael jerked his arm away from her grasp, his eyes blazing with fury. "You think this is some game, don’t you? You think you can manipulate this to get what you want?"
"That’s not what I’m saying!" Selene argued, her voice rising. "I’m just trying to find a solution!"
"A solution for who?" Kael spat. "For the pack? Or for yourself?"
