Chapter4: Confusedmoment

Selene’s face flushed with anger. "Why can’t it be both? Why can’t I want what’s best for the pack and for us?" "Because I’m starting to think you only care about yourself!" Kael yelled, his words booming off the stone walls. The council members watched in silence, their faces blank. Selene’s eyes glistened with unshed tears, but she didn’t back down. "You think I’m selfish? You think I’m only doing this for me? What about you, Kael? You’ve always been so sure of yourself, so certain that your way is the only way. Maybe it’s time to listen to someone else for once." Kael’s chest rose and fell with heavy breathes, his mind a storm of feelings. He couldn’t believe they were having this fight here, in front of the Council, with the fate of the pack hanging in the balance. He took a step closer to Selene, dropping his voice but keeping the focus. "And who do you think I should listen to, Selene? You? The woman who’s been talking about taking another mate for months? How can I trust anything you say when all you’ve done is undermine me?" Selene’s face fell, but she stood her ground. "Because I love you, Kael. I want what’s best for us. For all of us." Kael shook his head, his voice falling to a whisper. "I don’t know if I can believe that anymore." The room fell into a heavy silence, the strain between them obvious. The council members stayed quiet, watching the scene progress with careful eyes. Aldric finally spoke, his voice calm but strong. "Alpha Kael, the decision is yours to make. But remember, this isn’t just about you or your marriage. This is about the pack. And the pack needs a strong, unified Alpha to lead them through the coming storm." Kael’s eyes flicked to the council, then back to Selene. His mind was a storm of confusion, doubt, and anger. He felt stuck, caught between his duty to his people and the falling ruins of his wife. He took a deep breath, his voice barely audible. "What if I’m not strong enough?" Selene looked at him, her face relaxing for the first time since they had entered the hall. She reached out to touch his arm again, this time gently. Kael stepped back from Selene’s touch, his eyes filled with hurt and betrayal. He couldn't look at her right now, not when the weight of everything pressed down on him. “You think this is so easy,” Kael mumbled, shifting his look toward the Council. “But you’re asking me to destroy everything I’ve worked for. How can I just hand it all over?” Lyria's voice was steady. “We’re not asking you to destroy anything, Kael. We’re giving you a choice. Either you find a way to recover the loyalty of your people, or you risk losing it all. The question is—what are you willing to sacrifice?” Kael tightened his hands, his nails cutting into his palms. He looked at each adult in turn, looking for a sign, a hint of compassion in their faces, but found none. They had already made up their minds. They thought the pack’s fate counted on his choice. But could he really step down? Could he let someone else take his place? "I don't know if I can do this," he whispered under his breath, but loud enough for everyone to hear. A low, sharp voice broke the tight quiet. "If you can’t, then you’re not the Alpha you think you are." It was Elder Gael, the gruff fighter who rarely spoke during meetings but had a reputation for being blunt. Kael turned his head sharply toward Gael. His body tensed, the words hitting him like a punch to the gut. “You don’t know me,” Kael spat. “I know enough,” Gael shot back, his voice hard and cold. “You’ve always relied on your strength, Kael. But this task needs more than that. It takes humility. And if you can’t see past your own pride, then you’ve already failed.” Kael’s jaw clenched. The words stung because there was truth in them, a truth he didn’t want to face. He looked at Selene, who stood quietly beside him now, no longer pushing her agenda, just watching him with a strange sadness in her eyes. The quiet was thick with stress as Kael's thoughts raced. His mind spun with a thousand clashing feelings, but one kept resurfacing: his people needed him. He couldn't leave them. Finally, he spoke, his voice hoarse with the weight of the choice. "If I step down... who would take my place?" His words felt like knives cutting through the air. Aldric traded looks with the other elders before saying, "That is for you to decide, Kael. But it must be someone pure of heart, untouched by this pact. Someone who can rebuild the bond that was broken." Kael looked away, fighting to keep control over his feelings. His eyes flicked back to Selene, looking for something—anything—that would make this easy. But she offered no comfort. Instead, her face stayed still, a mask of quiet thought. “Do you have anyone in mind?” Kael asked the Council, half hoping they would offer an answer that could save him from making the choice himself. “No,” Lyria said simply. “This is your burden to bear, Kael. You must choose wisely.” Kael’s heart pounded in his chest. He could feel the walls closing in around him, the room getting smaller, smothering him. He could barely breathe. And then, Selene spoke softly, her voice cutting through the thick air. “Kael… what if there’s another way?” He turned toward her, eyebrows raised. “What do you mean?” She paused for a moment, as if weighing her words carefully. “What if instead of stepping down, you found a way to prove your loyalty? To show the pack that you are still their true Alpha, despite what’s in your bloodline?” Kael frowned, unsure of where she was going with this. “How could I possibly do that?” Selene stepped closer, lowering her voice as if the walls had ears. “You need to perform an act of loyalty so great, so undeniable, that the pack can’t help but follow you. Something that would erase the shadow of your ancestor’s betrayal.” Kael stared at her, a mix of disbelief and interest flashing in his eyes. “And what exactly are you suggesting, Selene?” She paused for a moment, then leaned in, her lips barely moving as she whispered, “There are rituals. Old ones. Forbidden ones. They were meant to bind loyalty between Alpha and pack—stronger than any blood pact.” Kael's eyes widened. “You’re talking about blood magic. That’s dangerous.” “And stepping down isn’t?” Selene countered, her voice sharper now. “This might be your only chance to stay in power and keep the pack together. Think about it, Kael.” Kael turned away, pacing the length of the room. His mind raced with the consequences. Blood magic was dangerous—unpredictable. But if it worked… if it could truly repair his pack’s loyalty… could he risk it? Elder Gael laughed from across the room, clearly unimpressed. “Blood magic,” he grumbled. “You’d risk the pack’s future for some ancient spell that may not even work? That’s not strength, Kael. That’s desperation.” Kael stopped in his tracks, his mind a storm of clashing thoughts. His eyes flicked between Gael and Selene, then finally to Aldric, whose face remained neutral. Aldric's words broke the quiet once more. "Whatever choice you make, Kael, understand that it must be made with the pack's future in mind. Not your own pride." Kael's thoughts spun with the effects of each choice. Stepping down would mean leaving his pack, his family. But using blood magic... that would mean risking everything he held dear." - "He felt like he was stuck in a nightmare, with no escape from the darkness closing in around him. Which road would lead to safety, and which to destruction?" - "Kael's heart ached with the weight of his choice. He thought of his family, his pack, and the enemy pack's rising danger. What would happen if he picked wrong?” Selene moved closer again, her voice low and eager. "This is your chance to prove yourself, Kael. To show everyone that you’re not just the Alpha because of your bloodline, but because you’re willing to do whatever it takes for your pack." Selene's eyes locked onto Kael's, her look burning with a ferocity that made him question her true goals. Was she truly trying to help him, or was she using him for her own purposes?" - "Kael has a mixed feeling that makes him felt a secret purpose behind Selene's words, a subtle trickery that made him wary. Though not too sure. Before he could answer, Elder Lyria spoke up, her voice quiet but firm. “Whatever path you choose, Kael, you must do it soon. The longer you wait, the more exposed the pack becomes.” Kael breathed slowly, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on him. He knew that every second counted, that he couldn’t afford to pause any longer. But what if he picked wrong? What if this decision—whichever one he made—ended in disaster? Finally, he spoke up “give me another 3 days to finalize this. I will have to meet my wife and family first thing tomorrow morning reach a decision.
