Fighting the Fire

Werewolf’s POV from that morning

Lucas woke up knowing he had only a few minutes before one of the younger siblings came in. Hopefully he could get a few more minutes of peace. The very first stretch in the morning is always the best, of course after sitting in bed for a few minutes contemplating whether to get up which of course was interrupted by Cyrus the younger brother rushing in. It was going to be Cyrus’s first patrol run to work on getting his stamina up. He just turned thirteen, so he was getting close to his first shift which had to tell him was the hardest.

Reluctantly Lucas got up and dressed in a muscle shirt and jeans the easiest to replace and the quickest to change out of if needed. With these red eyes, it’s starting to get worse going outside into the forest but if we don’t run and shift it can cause fevers and other issues for the wolves. The safety circle is starting to get smaller and smaller so it hasn’t been the safest to take the younger of the packs outside to practice, as often as he wanted to but what can you do he thought. Once he makes it downstairs, he see Cyrus already amped up wanting to start the run.

My father smiles, “It’s about time you got out of bed it’s already noon boy, what was it this time, the interweb, a show or video games?” He chuckled and his uncle, Apollo, who seems to never be gone spoke.

Apollo, “Oh come on the boy is only 16 let him live how he wants to live, who is he harming anyway besides himself.” He patted my shoulder and laughed and went inside. Just rolling my eyes and ignoring both Lucas grabbed his brothers’ hand and led them all into the entry of the forest with the words of their mother following us.

Violet the mother yelled, “Be careful with your brother and any other young ins that you see, we got word that they were letting others out of the lab across the ways.” She sighed and just watched them all disappear into the trees and bushes. He just giggled and started jumping around the trunks of the smaller tree. His feet slowly crunching the leaves beneath. He was so much shorter than me but from the back he looked just like me and our dad.

Lucas sighed and chuckled as he skipped and stepped on anything that cracked or crunched underneath his feet. Trying to drag out this run with him as long as possible because once he got back, it would just become a conversation or more so questions about me mating soon, that’s all it has been for the past week.

Until Lucas have found my mate, my partner, my Luna he can’t take over which if something were to happen to his father, we would be unofficial until someone took over. Becoming an unofficial pack leader to an easy take down because no one knows who to go to for answers or orders, so he knows this needs to be done fast. Just yesterday two whole wolf packs were taken down by this new generation of blood suckers with the help of some humans. He scoffed, how interesting prey helping predators until dinner time. He shivered at the thought.

Finally, we reached the big oak tree where it looked like people were already there.Puzzling, looking up I noticed a familiar face. He was sitting up close to the middle of the tree watching his sister.

Leo, our neighbor’s son with his older sister Luna. They were sitting on the branches just a few spots above us. Leo was the first one to jump down and land right next to Cyrus. He was this young boy who was as tall as me, which I stand almost six feet now, with brown shaggy short hair and green eyes while his sister is about 5’6, blonde hair with hazel eyes.

Leo, “Hey what are you guys doing out here, you missed everyone else, but we stayed behind to just stay away from the yelling.” Their parents were fighting with others like everyone right now about how the war between us all was going. Or what he can assume because that’s what everyone is fighting for. We’re trying to get more people on our side right now, especially with all the new advancements everyone is making with turning out powers even more extreme.

Luna sighed and jumped down, “Dude they don’t need to hear everything that happens in our house. Come on some things are private.” She rolled her eyes and shoved him playfully causing all of us to laugh.

Cyrus spoke before Lucas could, “Its okay we know how it feels. It’s all everyone is talking about right now. Dad was mentioning adding the special serum to us today it is getting that bad.” Lucas shakes his head. He wishes the kids could have somewhat a normal childhood. Just toys and junk food and cartoons.

Leo looked over at the other two trying to change the subject. “ So Lucas did they tell you anything about the new serum enhancement they created. Of all people you should be first to get it right? How do you think it will be. Did you hear the vampires managed to do the same.”

Lucas nod, “Yeah, we heard a few dozen of those blood suckers were created this week alone. Some of the witches and creatures have come to our side in defense but few. We found two more scientists that can help with training our powers too.” He winced and grabbed the back of his neck feeling a small spot that felt like a needle mark. Great he thought, he completely forget about that. He was already administered the serum.

Everyone looked over at him and all he could do was nod, “Yeah, they already gave it to me, said it supposed to be a new combination to increase my stamina and strength or something like that. I hadn’t thought of what it was going to turn me into, but I guess we’ll find out.” He chuckled softly but nervously trying to play it off. They looked at each other and then him nodding.

Luna looked over at him, “If you shift and need to blow off some stem I can watch him for you for a little while, ill take him home so he isn’t in harms way.”

Lucas smiled and nodded. “Thanks, I appreciate that.” He could feel his blood boil and pain shoot through my arm, trying to take it off he looked at his brother and smiled through his gritted teeth. “Alright bro, are you ready for your first run, get that blood pumping and see how close to shifting you can get, but we go too far, you got that?”

As they started to get into position to take off the Leo yelled, “Wait. Hold on.”
