Growth and Grit

The next morning dawned bright and humid over Manila. The campus was alive with the energy of a new day, and for Angelo, it marked the start of a grueling but hopeful journey. Early that morning, before most students arrived, he found himself on the basketball court. The challenge had been set: prove himself in a week. Now, every dribble, every sprint, and every shot carried the weight of his dreams. Angelo’s body ached from yesterday’s exhausting practice. He had spent hours perfecting his dribbling, shooting, and defensive moves. Sweat mingled with determination as he practiced under the watchful eyes of his peers. Even those who once sneered now observed his persistence with curiosity. Noah, the team captain, was often seen on the sidelines during these early sessions. At first, his gaze had been indifferent, perhaps even scornful. But as days passed and Angelo’s progress became undeniable, Noah found himself watching more closely. There were moments when Noah’s lips twitched in a hint of a smile as Angelo sank a difficult shot or defied expectations with a clever play. During a break in practice, Angelo paused to catch his breath. He sipped water from a chipped plastic bottle and looked up to see Noah approaching. “Not bad for a beginner,” Noah remarked with a tone that was almost approving. Angelo managed a tired smile. “I have a lot to learn,” he said, his voice raspy yet determined. Noah’s gaze softened for a fraction of a second before he responded, “Keep this up, and you might just surprise everyone.” There was a momentary silence—a gap filled with unspoken thoughts. He teammates begun to walk in for the morning practice . Surprised to find Noah and Angelo exchanging a puzzling gaze towards each other . Noah noticing his roommates walk in , he said “ isn’t it time for you biology class?” He asked Angelo .This was just a way to clear him out of the moment before his teammates bringing up the gaze joke . “ hey tough guy ! ” Carlo greeted Noah . “ what’s up with you and the science nerd anyways? You like him ” asking with a jokingly yet kind of a curious tone . Everyone else in the court stared laughing . Marlon , who is Carlos boyfriend added a joke ;“ that’s absurd Carlo . Noah likes girls . In fact isn’t he engaged already to his fellow heiress. Ooh lucky guy. Isn’t he ?” “Don’t be so sure ! ” Carlos added as he kissed Marlon and both of them heading to the lockers to change their cloths . Noah stood there quietly without answering to any of their jokes while staring at Angelo fading gaze outside the basketball court . As training progressed over the following days, Angelo found himself pushed beyond his limits. Coach Ramirez’s whistle became the soundtrack of his transformation. He discovered that each failure was a lesson and every success a small victory. The long hours, the bruises, and the sore muscles were all part of a process he had no choice but to embrace. In quiet moments between drills, when the gym was empty , Angelo would often think about his life beyond the court. He recalled nights spent worrying over bills, the constant care required for his sick grandmother, and the lonely dreams of a future where he could finally leave behind his hardships. Every drop of sweat was a promise that someday, he might find a way out—a way to a better life. Noah’s own transformation during this period was subtler. While his public persona remained that of the untouchable captain, internally he began to feel a stirring—an acknowledgment of the dedication he saw in Angelo. It wasn’t just that Angelo was learning to play basketball; he was learning to believe in himself. And that belief, Noah realized, was contagious. One afternoon, as dusk settled over the court, Noah lingered long after practice had ended. He watched as Angelo, alone now, practiced his free throws with painstaking concentration. The rhythmic swish of the ball through the net echoed in the quiet evening air. Noah found himself drawn to this vulnerable display of determination—an authenticity that he rarely encountered in his own life. As Angelo was trying to shoot at a certain angle , his feet was trembling because it wasn’t positioned well . As he was struggling to make a hoop with his feet , he felt a warm touch behind him which was so close to him as they shared a breath of the same air . “Angelo,” Noah whispered softly, startling the young man out of his practice. “Pay Attention To Your Balance and Your Stance Your feet need to be shoulder-width apart. Your knees should be slightly bent. If you like a stance that’s more open, then your shooting foot should be forward and your non-shooting foot trailing behind. If you like a stance that’s more square, then both of your feet should be facing the basket. Your fingers need to be spread apart enough to balance the basketball in just one hand, and the ball should sit right on your finger pads. Leave a bit of space between your palm and the ball. Make sure the ball is released before you reach the top of your jump. Your legs generate upforce, so use them! You should always land in the same spot that you left .” Noah whispered as he moved his hands all over Angelo following his instructions. “ Now shoot !” Impressed by his score , Angelo smirked a smile yet still in shock of how and when Noah walked into the court . “You’re doing better than you think.” The words were gentle, almost imperceptible, yet they carried a depth of encouragement that resonated within Angelo. Angelo paused, his eyes meeting Noah’s in the dim light. His heart pounding and lost thoughts of admiration towards Noah. Noah smiled ,“ am warning you , don’t fall in love with me ” he made a joke while smiling at him in a flirty way . “ oh please , I have enough to worry about than joining a queue of your admirers captain ” Angelo replied . “ and thank you for the score hint . It could take me forever to figure it out on my own .” “ your welcome, feel free to ask me any time for my assistance. The team members might not be friendly but there are Good people .just not used to you yet .” Noah replied . “ see you tomorrow at early practice . Get some rest ”
