Jelanie's POV
The following day at school was no different from the first, the students made mockery of me. I tried to bear it all but failed woefully. When the last bell for the day rang, I was more than happy to leave. Just then, the paper that was given to me fell to the ground. I hadn't gotten the chance to see what it was yesterday, except for the price which was written very boldly on it. I was really busy at the burger shop and when I got home, I was too tired to even remember it
“OakBrooke High Talent Hunt” The heading read and I creased my brows. Why would anyone give this to me? I had no talent or whatever. Then I read further down and it was not a ticket to participate but to be part of the audience. A small smile appeared on the corner of my lips. So thoughtful of whoever the sender was.
The week drew to an end and it was finally Saturday. I had been looking forward to the day, I was too excited to see who this was
When I got there, the security would not let me in, he claimed that I didn't look like someone who could afford the ticket "Well, kudos to you. I indeed cannot. But someone who could afford it gave it to me so you can't stop me from going in" I countered. He shook his head and pushed me backwards. "What is going on here?" Another security guard walked towards our direction. "This man here would not let me in because he thinks I can't afford the tickets" I complained. There was silence for a few minutes before the other security officer led me towards the door. "You don't judge people by how they look Gregory" I nodded at that and followed quickly from behind. He pushed the door open and I walked in. "Thanks" I said with a smile. He shook his head "Don't thank me yet. He only did all that to stall" I raised a brow. "What are you talking about?"
"Nothing, just go" I shrugged and walked right into the....stage?
What the f**k? The crowd had their eyes on me. Stage? Stage...I turned towards the door to run away but the security officer quickly left and locked the door. My heart began to pound really hard in my chest. What had I gotten myself into? I shouldn't have called in sick today. I should have just gone to work
"Well? Are you here to stare at us or show us your talent?" I swallowed hard, cleaning my sweaty palm on my dress. "We don't have all day girl. Introduce yourself and tell us what you will be doing today" Another judge said. "My.." and I sprinted away, or at least, I tried to. There was a huge man standing by the exit, he shook his head, making me understand that it was a bad idea. "What the hell is going on here? Leave the stage and let the next person..."
"My name is Jelanie and I will be singing today" I cut in. Running away will make me look stupid. Better I do something and run away to hide my shame forever
I grabbed the microphone and took a deep breath. "🎶In the silence, I hear your voice
A whispered goodbye, a haunting choice
The city's awake, but I'm still asleep
My heart, a heavy burden, my soul to keep....🎶
"......🎶Like a sunset, our love won't last
I'm left to wonder, where did we go wrong?
Forever searching, for the love we once called home...🎶"
When I was done singing, there was utter silence in the crowd. I couldn't fathom or comprehend the meaning of the judges' expressions. I knew I did bad, my voice was croaky and hoarse. I took one step, reader to run away but I stopped in my tracks. Slowly but steadily the whole crowd began to clap and cheer. "Oh my goodness! That was an amazing performance, the best I've seen so far" The judges were on their feet as they clapped and praised my singing. A smile appeared on my face. Words could not describe how happy I was. "You are a star". "Thank you! Thank you so much". I turned to the direction where Blake was seated. There was no smile on his face. He had failed. I felt good about myself, I had been able to remove the dirty smirk from his face.
Immediately our eyes met, he jumped to his feet and left the building. That was the last I saw or heard from him till graduation. I heard that his father took him out of the country for his studies.
After the show was over, it was time to pick the winners and guess who it was...Meee! I was overjoyed. I had always loved singing right from childhood, I had always dreamt of being a famous singer but as I grew up, that dream slowly faded away when the reality of my life condition hit me. This win gave me an opportunity, at least the few people of Oakbrooke High had heard my voice, they said I was a star. This was a good start. I planned on using the sum I won, fifteen million dollars, to sponsor my career and realize my dream, but fate had other plans for me
My elder brother who painted for a living, fell off a ladder while working and broke his spinal cord. When he was rushed to the hospital, the doctors said we needed to pay the sum of Fourteen point Five million dollars. I didn't know if to be happy or sad at the same time. Normally, there was no way on earth my parents could afford that, but with my win, the bill would be settled and his life would be saved. But that only meant that our lives would remain the same, no superstardom for me, and our family would not be alleviated from poverty. I did pay the money, the remaining amount was used to pay off the debts of my parents, while the little one remaining was used for other things. I was happy that I still had my brother but sad that my hopes were short lived.
"Lanie! Lanie!" I was in my bedroom, scrolling through my cell phone when I heard my mom call for me from downstairs. I rushed over and there I saw him. "Kaid Riff?" What the hell was the Almighty Kaid Riff of Troublemakers record label doing in my home? He came in, explained that he heard my singing voice and would love to sign me into his record label.
"Wait! What?" I could not believe my ears, but indeed it was true. Without thinking twice, I agreed and we signed the contract. Our lives changed afterwards. I was able to realize my dream and lived happily ever after. Or I wished. Life is not always green and roses, this was just calm before the storm
