I slept for so long, I got here by 12, and it was almost 6pm, and I had to go shopping and get foodstuffs and toiletries for the house. I unpacked my things in the wardrobe, took a long ass shower. I threw on loose pants and a t- shirt, I wrote down a list of things I'd be needing on my phone. I replied to some messages but ignored the ones from Damien. It's high time I changed my number. I grabbed a mini bag, put in my card, keys and lip balm. My phone beeped, and I checked it. It was from my period checker and that's when it dawned on me that I had missed my period last month.
No, it can't be possible. I slid down the wall in agony. We were always careful. Oh! No we weren't, memories of the times we had spontaneous s*x flooded my memory. But I'd always been on the pill, but I have to know for sure.
I covered my face and groaned in frustration. I grabbed my bags and headed out. I was locking the door when the apartment opposite mine opened up. I turned to take a look at my new neighbor, only to see Mira,
"Aurora! Don't tell me you're my new neighbor", she gushed.
"Well I am", I grinned.
"Welcome to San Francisco", we both headed to the elevator.
"Thanks for taking care of me on the plane."
"Nah, don't bother, it was my last day working as a flight attendant, and you made it memorable."
"Memorable? How was being sick on a flight memorable?"
"Well I've never had a sick passenger so that ticked the last thing on my bucket list."
We got to the first floor, and we were about to part ways. "Where are you heading? I'm going to the mall."
"So I am"
"Let's ride together then", she offered.
"You're a lifesaver", we both walked in the direction of her car. It's a white Audi, so chic.
"So what brought you here?"
"I got a new job as part of the marketing team at Alpha company as a personal assistant to the head of marketing"
"Oh really? I just got a job there too, I can't believe this", she gushed, smiling so brightly.
What a perfect coincidence. I got a neighbor and workmate, two in one, I totally hit the jackpot.
"Free rides", I cheered. "But why did you stop flying? That's like a free way to explore the world."
"Yeah, but I want to settle down with my boyfriend, I got engaged". I automatically looked at her fingers and I saw the ring, it was so beautiful.
"Congratulations",
"Thanks, you've got a boyfriend?"
"I….em…I shifted nervously. 'I used to, not anymore", I said quietly.
We got to the mall, found a good parking spot and got out of the car. We talked as we picked what we wanted to buy. Moving and leaving people you've known all your life and friends was very difficult, but here I am, I already have a nice neighbor and. work body.
"Not to be nosy even though I am. Is he the reason you moved?"
"Kinda, he cheated on me with his ex", I muttered.
"Oh My God, that piss of s**t!", she cursed out loud. A mother in front of us turned back, glared at us and covered her teenage son's ear.
"What? You think your son hasn't heard a curse word, get over yourself", Mira snicked.
The horror on the woman's face was hilarious. She didn't expect Mira to say anything. She walked away briskly, pulling her son with her.
"That was brutal", I laughed.
She shrugged, "I need to get one last thing", she linked her hands with mine, pulling me in the direction of the health center. Every medicine and test is sold, I do still need to get that pregnancy test. We headed in the same direction. I paused and so did she.
“Don't tell me we're both getting a pregnancy kit?"
"This coincidence is starting to freak me out". I grabbed five different types of pregnancy kit just to be sure.
"Why grab so much?" She chuckled.
"I just don't want to take chances, I have to be sure."
We both walked to the counter, paid for our stuff and headed back to the car.
She started the car and drove off, the ride to the apartment was so quiet. I could tell Mira wanted to say something, but she was holding it in, and just moving around, shuffling her feet inside the elevator.
We walked to our room, "Spit it out Mira, you're driving me crazy nuts with your unease."
"Have you decided on what you're going to do if it's positive?"
"I haven't"
"What about father?"
"I really don't know, I just moved to another city, Mira. I'll figure all this out, I just hope I'm not". I can't deal with being pregnant in a new city and job.
I took a deep breath to calm myself down, I didn't want to freak out, "Goodnight Mira, see you tomorrow", I sighed.
"Goodnight Aurora and you'll be fine", she pulled me in for a hug. "You can come join me for dinner after if you don't want to be alone", she offered and went inside her house.
I opened mine, entered and locked it, I headed to the kitchen, unpacked all that I had got. I decided to just order some food, I am too tired to cook anything right now. I settled for a burger with extra cheese, and a smoothie. I headed to my room, I took out all the tests and read the instructions, I had to dip them in urine. I undressed and headed for the bathroom. I peed into a little plastic container and stuck three test kits in it. I took a quick shower, put on my nightwear, then I heard a knock. That must be dinner. I'd enjoy my dinner first before checking the test, I don't want my mood to go down the drain before I eat.
I strode to the living room, opened the door and collected my food, paid for it and tipped the guy. I placed it on the table, turned on the TV, searched around different stations and just settled for a Telenovela. It kept me from thinking of what was waiting for me in my room, but not for long. I ate faster. Let's just get this over with. The sooner I know my fate, the better.
I put away the dishes, switched off the TV, made sure the doors and windows were locked, then switched off the light and went to my room. I walked into the bathroom, picked up the kit and looked at it.
My heart stopped. Oh God! My hand was shaking, this can't be real.
I pulled out the remaining two left to do another. Water started to pool in my eyes, I pulled down my pants and peed on the sticks. I washed up and painfully waited for the longest two minutes of my life. I looked at the test, and it was the same thing, the two red lines glaring at me. Tears leaked out of my eyes, I wiped them off, threw the sticks and the bin, washed my hands and went to lie down on the bed.
I know the success rate is 99%, but why should I be among the one percent the pill doesn't work for? This can't be happening to me, not right now that I've begun to move on.
This is just wrong timing God.
How do I even tell him? I can't go back just because I'm pregnant. I also have to go to the hospital to know how far gone I am.
What a perfect welcome to San Francisco greeting.
I wish I had a family, a friend to share this with, but I have no one. The people I thought were my best friends, Skylar and Sylvie were actually Damien's. I wasn't really a social person, all I knew was work and home, but being with Damien made me more social. I won't lie, they were superb, supportive friends, but they also knew about the stupid bet and kept it from me. I can clearly remember the day I met them. We bonded on the fact that we both hated Kath.
~~~PAST
It was my lunch break, I was seated on the counter, happily munching on a plate of cookies and velvet cake while reading a novel. Too much sugar, I know, but luckily for me, I don't add weight easily, but I really need to step up my eating game. Rita entered with a stained shirt and an empty cup of coffee. She dropped it so hard it made a shattering noise. The cup fell off the saucer, but it caught it before it broke into tiny pieces on the floor. I'm really not in the mood to sweep glasses off the floor.
"Oh s**t! So sorry Aurora", she mumbled, pressing two fingers on her temples.
"Why is a frown plastered on your face and did you feed your shirt the coffee instead?"
"Hahaha…..very funny". She rolled her eyes at me. "Well Kath decided my shirt would like the coffee more."
"You're joking, right?" I closed my book, pushing it aside.
"I'm serious, that's the exact word she said to me before swinging the cup at me."
"Why would she do that?"
"She took forever to drink her coffee, and it got cold", she took a tissue from the table, dabbing at her shirt.
Gosh! I hate her guts even more.
"So are you going to be walking around with a stained shirt?
"Nah, I always have a spare. It's not the first time she's done it"
"Wait, let me get this straight, she usually does this and Damien just sits there without saying anything?"
"He does but the same thing still happens. I've gotten used to it", she shrugged.
"Nope, nobody should get used to nasty bitches"
"And I still have to go serve her coffee again."
A crazy idea popped into my head. It's high time she had a taste of her own medicine. I can't wait to see her face when she sees it's me again. So of course, I offered to help as the loving friend that I am.
