🖤 THE MAFIA KING'S SECRET QUEEN
Chapter Four — The Proposal
The next morning began like any other.
At least, that was what Seraphina Vale believed.
She sat at the breakfast table with a cup of tea between her hands, listening to Clara complain about an upcoming event while Ethan argued with her over something neither of them seemed willing to let go.
Marcus was unusually quiet.
Fia noticed.
She always did.
Her eyes briefly moved toward him.
He was reading the newspaper, but he hadn't turned the page in several minutes.
"Uncle Marcus?"
He looked up.
"Yes?"
"Is something wrong?"
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Fia studied him.
Marcus folded the newspaper.
"Actually, there is something I'd like to discuss with you."
Clara immediately looked between them.
Ethan stopped eating.
Fia placed her cup down.
"With me?"
Marcus nodded.
"After breakfast."
Something about his expression told her this wasn't a casual conversation.
She nodded.
"Okay."

The Conversation
An hour later, Fia entered Marcus's study.
The door was already open.
Marcus stood beside the window with his hands in his pockets.
"Sit."
Fia took the chair opposite his desk.
Marcus didn't immediately speak.
That alone made her uneasy.
He was usually direct.
"What happened?"
"Nothing bad."
"Then why do you look like you're about to tell me something bad?"
Marcus almost smiled.
"You've always been too observant."
"You taught me."
That made him smile.
Only briefly.
Then his expression became serious again.
"There has been a proposal."
Fia blinked.
"A business proposal?"
"No."
Marcus sat down.
"A marriage proposal."
Silence.
Fia stared at him.
For several seconds, she genuinely didn't know what to say.
"Marriage?"
"Yes."
"Whose?"
"The Devereaux family."
The name meant something immediately.
Everyone knew the Devereauxs.
They were one of the most powerful families in the country.
Their legitimate businesses were everywhere.
Their influence was even greater.
And Zavian Devereaux—
Fia had heard his name before.
Everyone had.
The current head of the family.
Twenty-eight.
Extremely wealthy.
Extremely powerful.
And notoriously private.
Fia leaned back slightly.
"Why me?"
Marcus studied her.
"Because they believe the marriage would benefit both families."
"That's the business answer."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
Fia continued.
"What's the real answer?"
Marcus was silent.
That silence told her enough.
"There isn't one," he finally said.
Fia didn't believe him.
But she didn't push.
Not yet.
----------------------------------------------------
Zavian Devereaux
That afternoon, Fia received the information her family had gathered about him.
There wasn't much.
That was the first thing she noticed.
For a man with so much power, Zavian Devereaux had remarkably little personal information available.
Business records.
Charity appearances.
Photographs from formal events.
A few interviews from years ago.
Nothing meaningful.
No scandals.
No public relationships.
No unnecessary attention.
Fia stared at one particular photograph.
Zavian stood beside his father at a business event.
Black suit.
Dark hair.
Sharp features.
A serious expression.
But it was his eyes that caught her attention.
Even in a photograph, they were striking.
Steel-gray.
Cold at first glance.
Yet strangely focused.
Fia stared at the image for another second before closing the file.
"I don't know him."
Marcus nodded.
"You don't have to decide today."
"Do I have a choice?"
He looked directly at her.
"Always."
That answer surprised her.
Marcus leaned forward.
"If you say no, the proposal ends there."
Fia remained silent.
She knew Marcus meant it.
He had never forced her into anything.
Not once.
"If I say yes?"
"Then you meet him."
"And if I don't like him?"
"You walk away."
She smiled faintly.
"You make it sound very simple."
"It should be."
Marcus's voice softened.
"This is your life, Fia. Not mine."
She looked down at her hands.
For years, Marcus had given her something she could never repay.
A home.
A family.
A normal life.
If this marriage could strengthen the family that had protected her for so long, perhaps it was worth considering.
"Let me meet him."
Marcus's expression changed slightly.
"You've decided?"
"No."
Fia looked up.
"I said I'll meet him."
That was enough.
----------------------------------------------
Across the City
At the Devereaux estate, Zavian sat in his office.
The file was still open on his desk.
Seraphina Vale.
Twenty-four.
Only child?
No.
Raised within the Vale household.
Well educated.
Wealthy.
Private.
No scandals.
No complicated relationships.
No obvious problems.
On paper, she was almost too perfect.
Zavian closed the file.
His father stood across from him.
"You don't have to agree."
"I know."
"You can meet her first."
"I assumed that was the point."
Adrian gave a faint smile.
"She's intelligent."
"You've met her?"
"Briefly."
"And?"
"She's composed."
Zavian leaned back in his chair.
"That's all?"
"For now."
Zavian looked at the file again.
He wasn't against marriage.
He simply had never considered it important enough to pursue.
His life was already complicated.
Adding another person to it could create unnecessary problems.
But if a marriage strengthened the family's position while giving both sides stability, there was no reason to reject it immediately.
"Arrange the meeting."
Adrian nodded.
"When?"
"Whenever they're available."
---------------------------------------------------
The First Meeting
Three days later, the Vale family received the invitation.
A private dinner.
Nothing extravagant.
No press.
No unnecessary guests.
Just the two families.
Fia stood in front of her mirror that evening.
She wore a long, elegant midnight-blue gown that fell softly to the floor, fitted at the waist before flowing naturally around her. The neckline was modest and graceful, while the sleeves were delicate and fitted around her arms.
She had chosen the dress herself.
Nothing too revealing.
Nothing too flashy.
Just elegant enough for the occasion.
Her long, dark hair fell in soft waves down her back, with a few loose strands framing her face. Small silver earrings rested against her ears, matching the delicate bracelet around her wrist.
She had deliberately kept her makeup subtle.
A soft glow to her skin.
Lightly defined eyes.
A hint of color on her lips.
Nothing that could compete with the unusual lavender of her eyes.
Clara sat on the edge of her bed, watching her.
"You look beautiful."
Fia adjusted one of her earrings.
"I'm meeting a man, not attending a coronation."
"Technically, you're meeting a future husband."
"Potential future husband."
Clara smiled.
"You're nervous."
"I'm not."
"You touched your earrings six times."
Fia turned toward her.
"You're counting?"
"Of course."
Fia shook her head, trying not to smile.
Then she looked at herself in the mirror again.
Her lavender eyes stared back at her.
For a brief second, she remembered the box hidden inside her wardrobe.
The old photograph.
The things she couldn't explain.
Her fingers instinctively moved toward her wrist, where the sleeve concealed the mark she never allowed anyone to see.
She stopped herself.
Tonight wasn't about the past.
Tonight was about a man she had never met.
Zavian Devereaux.
And for the first time, she wondered what kind of man would be waiting for her on the other side of those doors.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Devereaux estate was even more impressive in person.
When the Vale family arrived, the front doors opened before they reached them.
Marcus placed a reassuring hand against Fia's shoulder.
"You all right?"
"Yes."
"Remember."
She looked at him.
"You don't owe anyone anything."
Fia smiled.
"I know."
They entered.
------------------------------------------------------------
Zavian was waiting in the main drawing room.
He stood near the windows, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit.
When the doors opened, his attention shifted.
His steel-gray eyes moved across the room.
And stopped.
On her.
Seraphina Vale.
For the first time, Zavian saw the woman whose name had been sitting on his desk for days.
She was beautiful.
But it wasn't simply her appearance that caught his attention.
It was the way she carried herself.
Calm.
Composed.
No nervous fidgeting.
No attempt to impress him.
She simply walked into the room as though she belonged there.
Fia's eyes met his.
Steel-gray met lavender.
Neither looked away.
For a moment, neither said anything.
Then Zavian stepped forward.
"Seraphina Vale."
His voice was deep and controlled.
"Zavian Devereaux."
She offered her hand.
He looked at it for a fraction of a second before taking it.
His grip was firm.
Warm.
Brief.
Neither felt anything resembling love.
There was no instant spark.
No dramatic heartbeat.
No overwhelming attraction.
Just two strangers studying each other.
Two people trying to determine whether they could live with the decision their families were considering.
Zavian released her hand.
"Nice to meet you."
"Likewise."
His eyes remained on her for another moment.
Then he stepped aside.
"Shall we?"
Fia nodded.
As they walked toward the dining room, neither of them knew what the other was hiding.
Neither knew what the future held.
Neither knew that this simple dinner would eventually become the beginning of something neither family could control.
For now, they were simply strangers.
A powerful man.
A wealthy young woman.
And a marriage proposal sitting quietly between them.
Neither was looking for love.
Neither expected to find it.
