At 6pm, Elaine failed to attend her own birthday party. Instead, she, Madison, and Anastasia crowded into her tiny bedroom for a sleepover-turned-breakup-celebration. Even if her relationship was never real, she at least deserved to celebrate overcoming the deception. “Who knew Damien would turn out to be such an asshole?!” Madison threw her arms up in exasperation. “I did!” Anastasia volunteered, “I knew from the start that he wasn’t good enough for you, Elaine!” “We really ought to kill him!” “I would certainly enjoy orchestrating his untimely demise!” Elaine managed a half-hearted smile at her friends’ antics. She knew they were all bark and no bite, but seeing them so firmly take her side warmed her heart. At least a bit. One doesn’t get over a years-long deception in a single day
