Two days later, Elara found a familiar face waiting by her office lobby: Arif, her ex-fiancé. He leaned against a marble pillar with the same charming smile that had once made her believe he cared.
“Heard you’re dragging your feet on that old warehouse,” he said, falling into step beside her as she walked to her car. “Funny—you used to be so focused. Now you’re wasting time on ruins and some glorified handyman.”
Elara stopped short. “What I do is none of your business anymore.”
“Isn’t it?” His voice dropped, sharp and mocking. “Everyone’s talking. The brilliant Elara Devara, throwing away her career for a man who can’t even build a proper skyscraper. If you’re not careful, I might have to remind everyone who really designed that tower you got the award for.”
Cold anger coiled in her gut. She’d never had proof he’d stolen her work—only her word against his. “Get away from me, Arif. Or I’ll report you for harassment.”
He laughed and backed off, but his parting words lingered: “You can’t hide from your mistakes forever, Elara. Or your weaknesses.”
That night, she arrived at the warehouse quiet and shaken. Julian noticed immediately. When she told him what had happened, his jaw tightened, his hands curling into fists.
“He’s trying to scare you,” he said, pulling her close. “Because he knows you’re stronger now. You’re not the same woman he could push around anymore.”
But Elara couldn’t shake the fear. Arif knew exactly where to strike: at her reputation, the one thing she’d spent years protecting. If he ruined that, she had nothing left.
