Emma's POV
“I’m coming right now,” he said, already telling the driver to change directions. “Everything will be okay.”
He hung up and leaned forward to talk to James.
“Take me to Rivers’ apartement. Now.”
“And call the Dr. Armando!”
James reacted quickly. He immediately pulled out his phone, spoke briefly to someone, hung up, and turned around.
“Mr. Sterling, the family doctor is on his way. He’ll be at Miss Rivers’s apartment soon.” He reported.

“What should I do? I’m so scared... Alex, the baby...” A woman’s panicked voice came through the phone speaker, making my husband’s jaw tighten.
“Charlotte, don’t be afraid,” Alex said softly into the phone.
“Trust me, you and the baby will be fine.” I listened to this usually cold man comfort another woman, even when I, who was officially his legal wife, was by his side. And it so f*****g funny. f*****g irony.
So, actually he could be gentle like this.
He just never was with me.
Soon, I heard the doctor arrive on the other end of the call, mixed with Charlotte’s panicked cries.
After a few minutes, the doctor finished examining her. He took Charlotte’s phone and spoke directly to Alex. “Mr. Sterling, please don’t worry. Miss Rivers had some light bleeding due to stress. She just needs bed rest.”
Alex’s frown relaxed when he heard this.
James, sitting in the passenger seat, glanced back at me in the rearview mirror. I knew I looked miserable. He’d worked for Alex for five years, so he knew all about the situation between Charlotte, me, and his boss.
When Charlotte went abroad, it gave me the chance to marry into the Sterling family. Now that she was back, I’d have to give up my place as Mrs. Sterling sooner or later.
James hesitated, then asked, “Mr. Sterling, since Miss Rivers is okay, do you still want to go to her place first?”
“Stop the car,” Alex said sharply.
The BMW braked hard and stopped suddenly. I wasn’t ready for it. I lurched forward and hit the back of the passenger seat hard.
“Get out.”
Before I could recover from the pain, Alex’s cold order hit me like ice.
I pressed my fingers against my stomach and slowly sat up straight. I looked out the window.
Scanned the hills around us, were so dark and quiet.
I tried to reason with him. “Alex, can you at least drop me off in town?” The canyon road took nearly forty minutes to drive, and we’d only gone about a third of the way. Cell service was spotty out here, and I couldn’t call a ride. If I got out now, I’d have to walk back.
With my current condition, even sitting in the car was painful. Walking back would probably kill me.
But Alex didn’t care at all. He cut me off, sounding tired and ruthless. “Emma, don’t make me say it twice.”
I laughed bitterly at myself. Emma, how could you be so naive to think Alex would care if you lived or died?
I should have understood, his gentleness and patience belonged to Charlotte. All he had left for me was coldness and disgust.
“James, get her out,” Alex’s voice was ice cold.
“Don’t bother. I’ll get out myself.”
I took a deep breath, opened the door, and stepped out.
Before I could even steady myself, the door slammed shut and Alex’s vehicle pulled away fast. Leaving me.
I stood there watching it get smaller and smaller until it disappeared completely.
I crouched down. I pulled out my phone and typed a message with shaking fingers:
[Alex, let’s get a divorce.]
