My Heart Chartted

Ava Mitchell's POV For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. The question hung between us. Do you want revenge? I stared at Damien Hart, trying to understand what I was hearing. The man standing in front of me wasn't someone who asked meaningless questions. Damien was known for his sharp mind, his intimidating presence, and his ability to control every situation he entered. People didn't say no to Damien Hart. They didn't challenge him. They didn't even dare look him in the eye for too long. Yet here he was, standing in the middle of a crowded hallway, looking at me as if he already knew the pain I was trying so desperately to hide. I quickly pulled my arm away from his hand. "I don't know what you're talking about." My voice sounded weaker than I wanted. Damien's expression didn't change. Of course it didn't. The man looked like he had been carved from stone. "You do." I swallowed. My eyes burned, but I refused to let the tears fall again. Not here. Not in front of him. Not in front of anyone. "Jason made his choice," I said quietly. "There's nothing left to do." Damien glanced toward the ballroom. Through the open doors, I could see Jason laughing with guests. Chloe stood beside him, accepting congratulations as if she hadn't destroyed five years of my life. My chest tightened. I looked away. "I don't need revenge." It was a lie. A beautiful, painful lie. Because a part of me wanted Jason to feel what I felt. I wanted him to understand what it was like to have someone you trusted completely turn around and break you. Damien studied me for several seconds. "You are lying." I frowned. "Excuse me?" "You don't want revenge because you're weak enough to forgive him," he said calmly. "You don't want revenge because you're afraid of becoming someone you don't recognize." His words hit too close. I looked at him. How did he know? How could someone who barely knew me understand exactly what I was feeling? "You don't know me, Mr. Hart." "No," he replied. "But I know my brother." A bitter smile touched my lips. "Then you should know he doesn't care." Damien's jaw tightened slightly. That was the first emotion I saw from him. Anger. Not toward me. Toward Jason. "My brother has always been reckless." The way he said it made me realize this wasn't the first time Jason had disappointed him. I looked down at my hands. The diamond necklace suddenly felt heavier around my neck. "I was stupid." Damien's eyes narrowed. "Don't say that." I looked up. His voice was firm. "You trusted someone. That doesn't make you stupid." For some reason, those words hurt more than anything else. Because they were the first kind words I had heard all night. I looked away quickly. "I should go." I stepped forward, but Damien's voice stopped me. "Wait." I turned around. He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small business card. He held it toward me. I stared at it but didn't take it. "What is this?" "My private number." I looked at him in confusion. "Why would I need that?" "Because tonight isn't the end of your story." My heartbeat slowed. Damien's gaze moved toward the ballroom again. "Jason believes he won." A coldness entered his voice. "He believes he made the smarter choice. He believes he can hurt people and walk away without consequences." He looked back at me. "I don't like people who mistake kindness for weakness." I stared at him. "What are you saying?" For the first time, something unreadable crossed his face. Something dangerous. "That sometimes the best revenge is becoming untouchable." Before I could respond, he placed the card in my hand. Then he walked away. I watched him disappear into the crowd. The same crowd that had watched Jason destroy me. But somehow, Damien Hart's words stayed with me. Tonight isn't the end of your story. The drive home felt longer than usual. The city lights blurred through the car window as I sat silently in the back seat. I didn't cry. I had already given Jason enough tears. Instead, I stared at the engagement ring advertisements flashing across buildings and wondered how many women had smiled while secretly breaking inside. When I finally arrived at my apartment, I walked inside and dropped my purse on the table. The silence was unbearable. This place was filled with memories. Jason cooking breakfast on Sunday mornings. Jason sitting on my couch while we watched movies. Jason promising me that no matter what happened, we would always choose each other. I closed my eyes. But all I saw was him holding Chloe's hand. My phone suddenly rang. I looked at the screen. Jason Hart. My first instinct was to answer. Five years of love doesn't disappear in one night. But my hand froze. Then the phone stopped. A few seconds later, a message appeared. Jason: We need to talk. I stared at the words. Talk? Now he wanted to talk? After publicly humiliating me? Another message appeared. Jason: Please don't make this harder than it already is. I laughed softly. The sound was empty. Harder for who? Him? My fingers hovered over the screen. Then another notification appeared. This time, it wasn't Jason. It was an unknown number. My heart suddenly tightened. I opened it. There was only one sentence. Unknown: If you want to know why Jason really left you, meet me tomorrow. Come alone. I stared at the message. A cold feeling traveled down my spine. Why would someone say that? Was this another cruel game? Another way for the Hart family to humiliate me? I was about to delete it when another message arrived. This time, there was a picture attached. My blood ran cold. It was Jason. But not with Chloe. It was a picture taken weeks ago. Jason meeting someone in secret. Someone I recognized. Someone who should never have been connected to him. I zoomed in on the image. And my hands started shaking. Because the person standing across from Jason... Was someone who could destroy the entire Hart family.
