Everyone now watches me, my jaw shudders at the words that came out of the man’s mouth. He must be joking, I bite my lip to control the urge to laugh or cry, I step now touching the grass and I watch as everyone moves to my movement as if I have an invisible barrier, my eyes looking at everyone rapidly, “No.” I whisper, Hunter can hardly look at me, “No.” I laugh, these are the only words that can escape my mouth.
“No?” … “Princess, are you okay?”
“That’s not possible, you are mistaken.” The words just managed to escape my lips. “I'm sorry.” My lips felt unsteady, the dripping of my tears kept them moist, ‘please tell me this is a joke.’ But nothing, and still, he cannot hold our gaze. I couldn’t breathe, I mean I cannot breathe. “Princess?” He spoke.
“Vi?” Jake came above me and caught me as I fell, gasps and whispers flashed past me, and the darkness became darker, “Please take me away,” I whispered to him. Hunter stood by my words to come towards me. “No. Jake.” I whimper. The exchange between Jake and the older guy felt like permission to take me, he gripped my hand tight and held me up directing me to the house. “No,” I mumble. I re-directed our movements and headed towards the forest.
I am finally out of view, and the only thing I could do was be angry, be angry and cry.
“How could you!” I scream pushing Jake away. “You knew!” … “You knew!” I stupidly forced my fist through a tree where Jake should be standing, the pain felt numb, I cried, I screamed, and I cried for where the pain should have been and slumped myself down resting my head on the tree. “I want to go home.” I wipe away my tears. “I'm so sick of crying, I cannot stop crying. Is there something wrong with me? Jake. Make it stop.” …
“Vi?” a voice startles me, I must be dreaming, hallucinating because I thought I heard-
“Anna?” The shape moves further into the light, “Anna!” My words disappear. As soon as I realize what I have become I turn to hide my hideous self, my wolf eyes, my wolf claws, my wolf side. “No, don’t come closer,” I whisper.
“It’s okay, Vi.” Her whimpering voice calms me. “You don’t have to hide.” I turn, and she walks closer trembling to the feet, “Vi, your eyes.” I forced them to hide, hideaway, and slowly they did. She stops.
“I thought you were dead.” She whispers.
“I thought I was too.” She staggers towards me and drops cradling me in her arms.
“Hey, what did I say? You can’t die without me. Why is it you always get all the fun?” She laughs, it’s something, something that makes me feel normal, her human beating heart against my ear.
“Never,” I mumble.
“So…” She moves my face off her chest, wiping my tears. “You are royal?”
“Don’t.” I finally stand.
“They told me more than you did, being a werewolf, Vi. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was scared.”
“So was I!” She shouts. “You could have died.”
“So, could you!” I scream back. “What if it was you in that room, what do you think one blow to your head would have done to Anna?” She stopped; I had a point. It would have killed her instantly. I cannot lose any more human in me.
“What are you going to do now?” She whispers, lying next to me, deep within the forest.
“I want to go home.”
“They won’t allow that.” She mumbles.
“Why? How do you know?”
“They told me, they need to keep you close, if you go home, you won’t be safe, you’ll put your family in danger.” I thought for a moment, about my parents. About my siblings, I’ll have to stay…
“Are you okay now Princess?” I sat here on a log, like everyone else as if we were camping out on a holiday around the fire. I now know that he is the Alpha of this pack. His greyish-brown hair shows his age, but his body doesn’t, holding his figure in nice jeans and a stylish top, his image is deceiving.
“I'm sorry, but could you call me Violet?”
“Of course, Princes… Erm, Violet.”
“Thank you.” … “I can’t say yes, can I?” I have been betrayed, tortured, beaten, forgotten. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Of course.” The old man beams, well the alpha. I want to tell him about James and Warlock, but I'm distracted. I see him, standing and talking as if I am not here, with someone whose hair reflects the fire, and burns bright red. Her voice deep and seductive, Shona, he says, as if her name was a name from one of the gods, she must be important. She is quite beautiful. His eyes fall to the floor as If he hasn’t already sensed I am here, as if ignoring my existence, talking with her but listening to us. “Erm,” I cleared my throat. “Sir?” He laughs which startled me and everyone around, who just for a split second fell silent, as if his laugh was unfamiliar. A recognizable face looks over and startles me “Professor Mason?”
“It’s just Mason.” His unsure smile.
“You’re one too?” I should have known; I can smell it now.
“I'm sorry Princess.” I ignore his apology, is there anyone in the town who is not a werewolf?
“Don’t be so hard on everyone, Vi, they were just following my orders.” Just following orders.
“What about him?”
“Him?” He questions, I look over at Hunter. “My son?”
“Of course, he is,” I mumble.
“He wanted to tell you.” He spoke. “We all did.” ‘Did you order him to kiss me too?’
“Your father…”
“My father?” everything disappears. No matter how many times I hear father, I am fine, but when someone directly says ‘your father’ it must be a mistake because my mother doesn’t even talk about him. “You must be wrong; my father is dead,” I whisper. But that stops everyone anyway. Oh yeah, werewolf hearing. What I said, acted as a trigger to everyone around me, the wolves growled as if I said a forbidden word, and the other werewolves dared to turn on me.
“Stand down!!” An echo that could have destroyed the house behind us shattered the werewolves. “Now” Adrian sighs and pays his attention back to me again. “Your father. Violetta, he is our King.”
“King.” I shake my head as the words slip out of my mouth. As if the word was unfamiliar to me.
“You are of royal blood Violetta, remember like I said before, on your father’s side.”
“But how? My mother.”
“A bit of blood magic. We had to take away your mother’s memories to keep her safe.”
“Safe. From whom?” My anger gets the best of me.
“You must understand, Violetta. Not everything is good in this world. And what your father did was forbidden, even for a King himself. He had a child with a human, he shared secrets with a human. This is not allowed for a King. He would have given up his throne to be with your mother, but your mother was a weakness for him…” His voice slurred as if his memories had caught up with him.
“What do you mean weakness?”
“When Storm realized your father threw away the throne, and your father being the last heir, he took within his power to attack your home.”
“My home? My mother’s?”
“No, your Kingdom.” His expression on his face shows so much emotion in one conversation.
“My Kingdom.” ... “Where?”
“In another dimension”
“Dimension? I don’t understand.” My excitement cannot hide itself any longer. “That is incredible.” Just while I was having fun, the smell of portrayal creeps behind me.
“Violetta.” Adrian stands. “I am sure you have already met my son” The heir to alpha. Did he tell me that his father is alpha? Is that why he couldn’t kiss me? Or is it the fact that I am Royal, he did say that it is forbidden. But I stood, facing him, for the first time properly, fire stood in the background, the trees spitting and water dripping from the heat around us, the birds and wolves singing with their lyrics. “Mr. Gale” My hand trembles to meet him. His eyes darted to my hand as if it were an unrecognizable object and the words I spoke confused him.
“Princess” His eyes left my hand and he bowed; my mouth was forming a spit as he did. But I don’t think that would be a great way to show people who I am. But trust me, ‘Just wait. When you are alone!’ He pauses slightly midway from coming back up and targets his eyes towards mine. Yeah, you heard me right. The one thing I have learnt from James is that he helped me defend myself.
“I am sure my son has told you so much of our great King Emerick.”
“Emerick?”
“It looks like my son had forgotten his manners, and held secrets from you, Princess.” Adrian’s face drops and his hand on his shoulder tightens, but his face shows no sign of weakness, his heart says otherwise.
“Yes, Father” His voice startled me, coming in and out of sleep for the past couple of days, his voice felt as if it was not there. But now it is like I am hearing it for the first time, his soothing deep voice sends chills down my body, please don’t stop talking. And this is when I leave. “Princess?”
“Yes?” I stop.
“I hope we haven’t startled you?” Adrian’s worry hits me, his father figure shows as he stands near the still-unknown man, I once knew.
“No. Actually, it has been great, but can I go back in? I’m feeling a bit unwell.”
“Of course, Princess. Hunter” So that is who you are, Hunter. I don’t know if I am disappointed or not, did I want the human you? Or was that the human me talking? Or was the human you even really, was he made up too?
“No.” Hunter stops in his tracks. “Uh. I can go alone.” I nodded to reassure him I would be okay. But I know he would follow anyway, you can tell in his eyes, that my ‘no’ was an imposing word that he didn’t comprehend. And wanted to go against my desires to be alone, and far away from him as possible. But his small whispers were not whispers at all, begging his father to follow me. As soon as I left his father’s whispers became unbearable to hear but Hunter's feelings were as clear as ever…
